[Animal experiments on the frontal sinus development after craniofacial surgery on the frontal bone in Göttingen miniature pigs].

According to the literature, the development of the frontal sinus is a result of the active immigration of cells from the ethmoidal complex into the os frontale. This migration theory is in contrast to the results in patients with Apert's syndrome. When front-orbital advancement at the age of a few months is performed in these patients--at a time when the frontal suture is not yet closed--a sinus developed despite the distance between nasal root and os frontale, being up to 2 cm. In order to investigate the development of the frontal sinus, an animal study in 12 juvenile Goettingen minipigs (a

A trans-eyebrow zig-zag approach for frontal bone fractures✰.

Frontal bone fractures are amongst the most common facial fractures and surgical management, which has traditionally involved access via a coronal flap, can result in unsightly scarring, alopecia, paraesthesia, facial nerve weakness and temporal hollowing. Alternative approaches include use of endoscopically-assisted surgery, often through the eyebrow, which minimises the risk of unsightly scarring but may also sacrifice access in the process. In this technical note, we discuss a surgical technique for open reduction and internal fixation of fractures of the bone overlying the frontal sinus an

Frontal Bone Fracture Patterns Suggesting Involvement of Optic Canal Damage.

PURPOSE: Fracture of the frontal bone can be accompanied by damage to the optic canal. The present study uses finite element analysis to identify fracture patterns, suggesting the involvement of the optic canal. METHODS: Ten finite-element skull models were generated from computer tomography data of 10 persons. Then, dynamic analyses simulating collision of a 2-cm-radius brass ball to 6 regions on the frontal bone in the 10 models were performed. Fracture patterns presented by the frontal bone in the 60 experiments were observed, and all those involving the optic canal were selected. Commonal

Reconstruction of frontal bone using specific implant polyether-ether-ketone.

Defects on the craniofacial complex may result in aesthetic defects, functional damage, and psychologic consequences. Previously, surgeons showed no interest in reconstructing the operated area, but in the treatment of the problem, leaving bone contour is a secondary issue. Nowadays, area reconstruction with post-reestablishment of contour and local shape has become one of the surgeon's priorities. The use of alloplastic implants with specific digital design has been stated to be an effective technique on the treatment of craniofacial defects, reducing the need for manipulation in the intraope

Fronto-orbital advancement using an en bloc frontal bone craniectomy.

BACKGROUND: Fronto-orbital advancement is a procedure commonly performed in craniofacial centers for coronal and metopic suture synostosis. Several variations of the technique have been reported. OBJECTIVE: To describe our modifications to the anterior cranioplasty procedure and the results of our surgical series. METHODS: Using our craniofacial database, we retrospectively analyzed the records of all patients undergoing fronto-orbital advancement for craniosynostosis. The same team of neurosurgeons and plastic surgeons performed all procedures. Demographic data, operative time, blood loss,

Reconstruction of post-traumatic frontal-bone depression using hydroxyapatite cement.

The safety and efficacy of hydroxyapatite cement (Bone Source, Howmedica, Leibinger, Inc. Dallas, TX) use for the augmentation of post-traumatic frontal-bone depression was evaluated in a study of 20 consecutive oriental patients between June 1998 and July 2000 inclusively. The size of the depressed frontal bone ranged from 5 x 5 cm to 8 x 5 cm. The cement was placed in contact with the frontal sinus for 12 patients, none of whom revealed a history of paranasal sinus mucoperiosteal disease. Follow-up averaged 28 months for all 20 patients. Postimplantation evaluations included serial photograp

Bone replacement by ionomer cement in osteoplastic frontal sinus operations.

Ionomer-based cement is a new bone replacement material. After promising results in middle ear and skull base surgery, we started to use Ionocap as an alternative to metal osteosynthesis material. Between 1992 and 1995, 20 men and 9 women were treated with an osteoplastic approach for complicated frontal sinus diseases at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. Ionocap as bonding material for bone was used in 22 of the patients. The indications for osteoplastic surgery were recurrent frontal rhinosinusitis, mucoceles, skull base fractures, osteomas and meningocele. The surgical procedure using bone

Anterior table free bone graft technique for frontal sinus obliteration.

The osteoplastic flap technique for exposure of the frontal sinus has been an accepted approach for cases in which obliteration or exploration of the frontal sinus has been necessary. Preservation of vascularized anterior pericranium is credited with reduction of the chances of anterior table bone resorption and subsequent cosmetic deformity. Disadvantages include the need for templates and unpredictable random fracturing in the supraorbital rim area, increasing the chance of potential injury to the periorbita and/or supraorbital neurovascular structures as well as limiting surgical exposure i

Heterotopic Ossification Bone Formation in the Frontal Bones of an African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus).

A 5-year-old, male African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus) was presented with multiple, slow-growing, firm, bilateral masses around the dorsal orbital rims. Computer tomographic imaging revealed mild, incomplete bridging bone formation on the rostrodorsal aspects of the head. A moderate amount of smooth bone formation was identified at the rostrodorsal aspect to the left orbit, with minimal associated soft tissue swelling. Surgical biopsies were collected from the masses and histopathological analysis of the most rostral right mass showed well-differentiated bone, surrounded by dense fibrous

[Bone statics of the face: the frontal-sphenoid-pterygoid bone pillars as biomechanic equivalents of the mandible].

In general biomechanics, trabecular osteo-architectonics is considered as a response to the mechanical strains present in the bone (compression or traction). The facial and cephalic skeleton is no exception to this law. The study of the bony architectionic provides the proof, since we have demonstrated in the fixed facial bone mass (at the limits of the facial skeleton and the skeleton of the base of the skull) the biomechanical equivalent of the mandible: the cranio-facial pterygo-spheno-frontal bony pillars. Paired, symmetrical and with a medio-frontal junction, they represent an embryologic

An unusual case of corneal perforation secondary to Frontal Bone Mucormycosis.

We present the case of a 52-year-old male with a complex clinical presentation involving frontal sinus osteomyelitis (OM), mechanical ptosis, and extrusion of frontal bone sequestrum under the upper lid skin. He gave a history of chronic sinusitis, an uncontrolled diabetic for the past 2 years. The patient had a history of chronic sinusitis and poorly controlled diabetes for the past 2 years. Histopathological examination of excised sequestrum, stained with hematoxylin and eosin, confirmed a diagnosis of mucormycosis. Anterior segment examination revealed a corneal melt with a shallow anterior

Unreported variant foramen of the frontal bone: the latero-orbital foramen.

Variant foramina of the skull can lead to misdiagnosis on medical imaging and potentially, intraoperative complications if not appreciated. Here, we report an unusual foramen found superior to the frontozygomatic suture. The foramen was located on the left side at the superolateral rim of the orbit, 2.36 cm inferolateral to the supraorbital foramen. It was positioned 2.5 mm superior to the frontozygomatic suture. The foramen had a length of 3.1 mm and a width of 1.3 mm. The internal opening of the foramen was located 1.45 cm superolateral to the zygomaticotemporal foramen. We suggest that this

Primary osteosarcoma of frontal bone: A case report and review of literature.

RATIONALE: Primary osteosarcomas of the skull and skull base are rare, comprising <2% of all skull tumors. Primary osteosarcomas of the skull are aggressive neoplasms composed of spindle cells producing osteoid which have poor outcome. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 33-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a major complaint of a growing mass on her left frontal region of the skull for 10 months. Prior to the accurate diagnosis, the mass on her skull was considered to be eosinophilic granuloma. DIAGNOSES: Computerized tomogram (CT) scan of skull revealed a lytic lesion causing destruction of

Intradiploic epidermoid cyst of frontal bone with spontaneous fistulization to eyelid.

Dermoid and epidermoid cysts are choristomas that form due to the entrapment of epithelial remnants within the bony suture lines during embryologic development, around third and fifth week of gestation. Although these rare cysts, particularly the epidermoids, are most often seen in the cranial bones, they only constitute about 1% of all cranial tumors. Approximately, 25% of cranial epidermoids form in the diploic space of the membranaous bones of the skull, hence called intradiploic cysts. We describe the clinical manifestations and treatment of an intradiploic epidermoid cyst (IEC) of the orb

[Frontal aneurysmal bone cyst. A case report and review of the literature].

INTRODUCTION: Cranial aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a rare pathological finding that is usually diagnosed in young patients. It is defined as a benign lesion made up of intervillous spaces limited by connective bone tissue septa and osteoclast-type giant cells; these histological characteristics are common to extracranial ABC. Clinically, in most patients, they manifest as cranial tumours which may be painful and vary in size. About 100 cases of cranial ABC have been reported in the literature. We present a literature review of the cases of frontal ABC reported to date, including one that was

Correction of frontal bone hypertrophy with setback osteotomy and hydroxyapatite cement.

This case report illustrates a method of correction for severe hypertrophy of the frontal bone. Accurate preoperative assessment including physical examination, photographs, and radiological studies are necessary. The anterior table of the frontal bone is removed, recontoured, and stabilized to the adjacent bone while maintaining the integrity of the frontal sinus mucosa. Hydroxyapatite cement is used to resurface and contour the frontal bone. This method is demonstrated to be safe and well tolerated, and should be considered as the procedure of choice for this condition.
