Septicemia due to the anaerobic gram-negative bacillus Fusobacterium necrophorum is exceptional. It may originate in tonsillitis or intestinal or gynecological infection. We report one case in a young man with head injury. Fusobacterium necrophorum is frequently associated with aerobic pathogens such as streptococcus or staphylococcus (more than fifty per cent of the cases). Metastatic localizations are numerous, often pleuro-pulmonary (infarction, abscess), hepatic (cytolysis) and meningeal (purulent meningitis, cerebral abscess), and in some instances articular (joint swelling) or embolic. Bacteroides melaninogenicus and Bacteroides oralis are predominant anaerobes in orofacial infections and aspiration pneumonia. Fusobacterium species are common pathogens in aspiration pneumonia, brain abscesses and orofacial infections. Clostridium perfringens can cause bacteremia and wound infections. Clostridium botulinum can produce a paralytic toxin that causes a paralytic syndrome in infants. Clostridium difficile can cause diarrhea or antibiotic-associated colitis.

Chronic infection and associated inflammation have long been suspected to promote human carcinogenesis. Recently, certain gut bacteria, including some in the Fusobacterium genus, have been implicated in playing a role in human colorectal cancer development. However, the Fusobacterium species and subspecies involved and their oncogenic mechanisms remain to be determined. We sought to identify the specific Fusobacterium spp. and ssp. in clinical colorectal cancer specimens by targeted sequencing of Fusobacterium 16S ribosomal RNA gene. Five Fusobacterium spp. were identified in clinical colorect

An underweight 10-month-old Holstein heifer presented with anorexia and ananastasia and was euthanized. Postmortem examination revealed extensive ulceration in the esophagus, tongue, and omasum. Histopathological examination revealed severe necrotic esophagitis, glossitis, and omasitis. Many Gram-negative bacilli were detected throughout the necrotic area in the digestive tract; these were identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa on the basis of isolation tests, molecular examinations, and immunohistochemistry. Gram-negative long filamentous organisms in the superficial layers of the necrotic lesi

The involvement of fusobacteria in a wide range of human and animal infection has long been recognised. Slow-growing anaerobes, often in polymicrobial culture, they are not always identified but are present mainly in the oropharynx, from where they are bloodborne to other sites or aspirated into the lung. Fusobacterium nucleatum is commonly found in periodontal disease and produces tissue irritants such as butyric acid, proteases and cytokines. It has strong adhesive properties due to the presence of lectins, and these outer-membrane proteins mediate adhesion to epithelia and tooth surfaces, a

Fusobacterium necrophorum is the oropharyngeal pathogen usually associated with Lemierre's syndrome, a pharyngeal infection which evolves to sepsis, septic emboli and thrombophlebitis of the adjacent neck vessels. It is an uncommon causative bacteria of a liver abscess, and an extensive workup should, therefore, be performed in order to rule out potential sources of the infection. This case report describes the workup that led to the diagnosis of a colorectal carcinoma, which was deemed to be the source of the Fusobacterium bacteraemia.

Fusobacterium necrophorum infection is known to cause Lemierre's syndrome, not pelvic peritonitis. Herein, we report a case of Fusobacterium necrophorum pelvic peritonitis and bacteremia, without Lemierre's syndrome, mimicking intestinal necrosis. A 28-year-old woman with peritoneal irritation and shock was suspected of having intestinal necrosis due to the presence of hepatoportal venous gas and pneumatosis intestinalis. Intestinal necrosis was ruled out by emergency laparotomy. However, massive opaque ascites and inflammatory changes in the uterus and fallopian tubes were observed. Fusobacte

Lemierre's syndrome (LS) is characterized by thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein caused primarily by Fusobacterium necrophorum. LS is usually suspected in fit young adults with prolonged or prior pharyngeal infection. Atypical Lemierre's syndrome is commonly defined as Fusobacterium-associated thrombophlebitis outside the head-neck veins and usually occurs in older patients than typical Lemierre's syndrome. Here we present a case of atypical LS in a septuagenarian healthy Caucasian male with no prior history of pharyngitis and in whom both computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resona

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) acquired in childhood is asymptomatic, with the tonsils as the entry site to infect B lymphocytes and establish latency. Little is known about whether the microbiota influences EBV persistent infection. We aimed to characterize the tonsil microbiome with different EBV latency types. A cohort of 60 children with tonsillar hyperplasia were included. EBV latency types (0/I/II/III) and lytic phase were determined by immunohistochemistry. 16S NGS of lymphoid tonsillar tissue was carried out with the Illumina platform. Bioinformatic analysis was carried out with QIIME2 2023.

Pyogenic liver abscesses generally occur secondary to spread from active infective lesions. We report a rare case of liver abscess in a patient without a clear source of infection. A 19-year-old man was diagnosed as having a liver abscess after investigations when he presented with chief complaints of fever and lethargy. Fusobacterium nucleatum was detected in the pus culture taken from the abscess that was drained. His condition improved with antibacterial treatment. Further examination of the gastrointestinal tract suggested that the infection had tracked through the portal vein from a scar

Lemierre's syndrome is a suppurative thrombophlebitis involving the internal jugular vein, most commonly associated with Fusobacterium necrophorum, usually a complication of oropharyngeal infections. This syndrome is rare and is often overlooked. We present a case of sepsis mimicking initially severe leptospirosis (Weil's disease) due to acute febrile illness with multiorgan failure and hyperbilirubinemia. Finally, blood cultures revealed Fusobacterium necrophorum and computed tomography (CT) demonstrated bilateral pulmonary nodules and a thrombus in the right internal jugular vein. Early clin

UNLABELLED: Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) has been implicated in the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC), immune modulation, and resistance to systemic therapies. However, its role as a predictive biomarker of treatment response remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the association between Fn and oncologic treatment outcomes in CRC.
METHODS: This systematic review was performed according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD420261327958). MEDLINE, Scopus, and CENTRAL were searched through March 2026. Eligible studies included adult CRC patient

Lacrimal canaliculitis is an infection of the lacrimal canaliculus, often caused by bacteria, including species of Actinomyces. This report presents a unique instance of lacrimal canaliculitis instigated by the rare periodontal pathogen, Fusobacterium periodonticum, in a 49-year-old female homemaker. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented culture-confirmed case report of lacrimal canaliculitis associated with F. periodonticum.

Our review study addresses chronic periodontitis and its potential complications in the distal segments of the intestine and rectum. Subgingival colonization by gram-negative anaerobic bacteria such as Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Eikenella corrodens, and Fusobacterium nucleatum may, through haematogenous dissemination into non-oral tissues and organs, cause severe systemic diseases. In connection with colorectal carcinoma, the third most frequently diagnosed malignant tumor, special attention has been focused on the anaerobic rod Fusobacterium nucleatum, on

New findings show that Fusobacterium necrophorum, the bacterium responsible for most cases of Lemierre's disease, a relatively rare condition that is sometimes called "the forgotten disease," is also the culprit for more sore throats than Group A strep bacterium among college-aged patients. However, as there is no point-of-care test for F. necrophorum, providers need to rely on physical examination when determining whether a sore throat is due to the bacterial infection. In an analysis of 312 college students, investigators detected F. necrophorum in more than 20% of patients with symptoms of

A 71-year-old man presented with the clinical and radiological features of metastatic liver disease but subsequently was found to have multiple liver abscesses caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum. At liver biopsy, pus was aspirated and Fusobacterium necrophorum was isolated from the pus. Serial blood cultures and urine cultures were sterile and negative for Fusobacterium spp. The patient made a complete recovery in response to treatment with penicillin and amoxicillin. This case illustrates the importance of liver abscesses as an uncommon but completely treatable differential diagnosis for the

We present a case of retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis treated by urgent abdomino-perineal resection of the rectum with permanent colostomy. We can find no prior case in the English literature treated in this manner. Retroperitoneal occurrence of this disease is unusual. The process originated from perianal sepsis following chemotherapy for head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) is an anaerobic bacterium known for its association with periodontal disease and oral infections. It has been implicated in the development of gastrointestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Ulcerative colitis (UC), which is characterized by chronic inflammation of the colon, is a condition of unknown etiology with a rising incidence rate, significantly affecting the quality of life for patients. The increased intestinal permeability during UC may facilitate the adherence or invasion of F. nucleatum into the

Fusobacterium functions as both commensal and pathogen, linking the oral-gut axis to diverse diseases, including cancer. Evidence shows it modulates microbial balance, promotes dysbiosis, and contributes to carcinogenesis by driving inflammation, proliferation, invasion, and immune evasion. This review integrates ecological, molecular, and clinical insights, highlighting its roles in oral and systemic disease and discussing therapeutic potential, underscoring Fusobacterium's dualistic nature and implications for microbiome-targeted interventions.

Subacute hematogenous osteomyelitis is an insidious infection, which commonly has a delayed diagnosis. We describe the case of a 7-year-old boy with subacute osteomyelitis, which was initially considered to be a bone tumor. Infection should be considered in all cases of bone pain, especially in children, even in the absence of typical systemic features of inflammation.
