Fusobacterium necrophorum findings in Denmark from 2010 to 2014 using data from the Danish microbiology database.

Fusobacterium necrophorum findings in Denmark and estimation of the incidence of F. necrophorum bacteraemia was described using data from the nationwide Danish microbiology database (MiBa). All microbiological reports on any Fusobacterium species in Denmark were extracted for a period of 5 years from 2010 to 2014 from MiBa and from the local department of clinical microbiology. The overall incidence of F. necrophorum bacteraemia from 2010 to 2014 was 2.8 cases per million/year vs 9.4 in the age group 15-24 years. F. necrophorum was rare in blood cultures from children and middle-aged patients

Lemierre's syndrome complicating multiple organ failure caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum subsp. funduliforme F1260: Case report and review.

We described a case of a 24-year-old man with multiple organ failure caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum subsp. funduliforme F1260. This is the first described case of Lemierre's syndrome with multiple organ failure due to F. necrophorum subsp. funduliforme F1260 in an adult in China. Our study highlights that there may be a risk of misdiagnosis based solely on typical manifestations of internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis, metastatic lesions, and F. necrophorum isolated from blood cultures or normally sterile sites. Clinicians should be cognizant of the potential utility of metagenomic next

An outbreak of Fusobacterium necrophorum associated foot rot in a herd of four-horned antelope (Tetracerus quadricornis) in India.

An outbreak of contagious foot rot due to Fusobacterium necrophorum infection was reported in a herd of four-horned antelopes (Tetracerus quadricornis) in a wildlife sanctuary at Goa, India. The infected animals showed signs of anorexia, limping and foot lesions, like erosions and sloughing of hooves. Mortality was recorded in two antelopes in which gross lesions, like generalized congestion of skeletal muscles and internal organs, and multi-focal to coalescing abscesses in lung, pleura, and diaphragm were observed. Histopathological evaluation of interdigital skin showed zones of coagulative

Outer membrane vesicles from Fusobacterium necrophorum elicit protective immunity in mice and robust immune responses in sheep.

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a major opportunistic pathogen of ruminants that causes foot rot and liver abscesses and contributes to substantial economic losses. Current vaccines provide limited protection. Here, we prepared and evaluated outer membrane vesicles (OMVs)-based vaccine candidate derived from F. necrophorum. OMVs were purified by density-gradient centrifugation and were characterized for morphology, composition, and immunological activity. The purified OMVs showed intact vesicle structure and a uniform particle size distribution and contained virulence-associated antigens and path

Association between virulence factors of Escherichia coli, Fusobacterium necrophorum, and Arcanobacterium pyogenes and uterine diseases of dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between bacterial species-specific virulence factors (VFs) present in the uterus at 3 different stages of lactation (1-3, 8-10, and 34-36 days in milk (DIM)) and the incidence of metritis and clinical endometritis in dairy cows. The following VF genes were investigated: plo (pyolysin), cbpA (collagen-binding protein), and fimA (fimbriae expression) which are Arcanobacterium pyogenes specific; fimH (a type 1 pilus component), Escherichia coli specific; and lktA (leukotoxin), Fusobacterium necrophorum specific. Uterine swabs were colle

In vitro antimicrobial efficacy of Cannabis sativa L. (hemp) crude oil extract on Fusobacterium necrophorum of bovine origin.

Fusobacterium necrophorum commonly causes liver abscesses in grain-finished beef, which is mitigated using antibiotics in feed. However, microbial resistance development necessitates exploration of antibiotic alternatives. Here we report the antimicrobial efficacy of Cannabis sativa L. (hemp) crude oil extract and its constituents on Fusobacterium species.

Protoporphyrin IX derived from dual-species anaerobic biofilms of Fusobacterium necrophorum and Porphyromonas levii attenuates bovine neutrophil function.

Host immune cells and clinical interventions often fail to eradicate biofilm-mediated infections, resulting in chronic inflammation. The role of the biofilm three-dimensional structure in this tolerant phenotype has been studied extensively; however, the impact of small molecules released from biofilm-bacteria in modulating host immune function is less well understood. A model of mixed-species biofilms composed of Fusobacterium necrophorum and Porphyromonas levii was developed to evaluate bovine neutrophil responses to bioactive molecules released from either biofilm or planktonic bacteria. We

The Clinical Value of Cranial CT Venography for Predicting Fusobacterium necrophorum as the Causative Agent in Children with Complicated Acute Mastoiditis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fusobacterium necrophorum (F necrophorum) is an anaerobic bacteria that causes invasive head and neck infections in children. Several studies have demonstrated an increasing prevalence of F necrophorum as the causative agent in acute mastoiditis in children, with associated high rates of intracranial complications such as epidural abscess and sinus venous thrombosis, to name a few. F necrophorum requires a treatment protocol that differs from the empiric treatment that is tailored to more common pathogens (eg, group A streptococci, Streptococcus pneumonia), and hence ex

[Septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein due to Fusobacterium necrophorum (Lemierre's syndrome): case report and review of literature].

Lemierre's syndrome is an uncommon clinical entity. It is characterized by oropharyngeal infection followed by septic thrombophlebitis of the jugular vein with embolization to the lungs and other organs. It is usually due to Fusobacterium necrophorum. Although Lemierre's syndrome is rare, it is potentially fatal. It is important for clinicians to recognize and treat it appropriately. With prompt recognition, abscess drainage with possible ligation of the internal jugular vein and appropriate antibiotic coverage complete recovery can be achieved in most patients.

Should the risk of Fusobacterium necrophorum pharyngotonsillitis influence prescribing empiric antibiotics for sore throats in adolescents and young adults?

Fusobacterium necrophorum, a gram-negative anaerobe, causes pharyngotonsillitis primarily in adolescents and young adults (approximately 15-30 years old). The same age group has the highest incidence of peritonsillar abscess and the Lemierre syndrome. The same organism, F. necrophorum, is the most common cause of peritonsillar abscess in this age group and causes at least 80% of Lemierre syndrome cases. We outline the case for empiric antibiotic treatment of some patient in this age group who have a significant probability that F. necrophorum is the cause of their pharyngotonsillitis.

Synergistic effects of Fusobacterium necrophorum lipopolysaccharide, cytoplasmic, and culture supernatant fractions on induction of acute hepatic necrosis in rabbits.

Synergistic effects of toxic fractions of Fusobacterium necrophorum were examined for evaluation of the role of the toxin in inducing liver abscesses in rabbits. Cytoplasmic and culture supernatant fractions of F necrophorum had preparative activity for the Shwartzman reaction, and lipopolysaccharide of F necrophorum had preparative and provocative activities for the reaction. All 3 fractions were hepatotoxic. Inoculation into the bile duct with each fraction followed by intravenous inoculation with F necrophorum or Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide had a greater synergistic effect in induci

Fusobacterium necrophorum Promotes Apoptosis and Inflammatory Cytokine Production Through the Activation of NF-κB and Death Receptor Signaling Pathways.

Fusobacterium necrophorum can cause liver abscess, foot rot in ruminants, and Lemire syndrome in humans, Also, its virulence factors can induce the apoptosis of macrophages and neutrophils. However, the detailed mechanism has not been fully clarified. This study investigated the mechanisms of apoptosis and inflammatory factor production in F. necrophorum-induced neutrophils and macrophages (RAW246.7). After infection of macrophages with F. necrophorum, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine labeling assays indicated that F. necrophorum inhibited macrophage proliferation in a time- and dose-dependent manner

Analysis of the tonsillar microbiome in young adults with sore throat reveals a high relative abundance of Fusobacterium necrophorum with low diversity.

Fusobacterium necrophorum (Fn), a gram-negative anaerobe, is increasingly implicated as an etiologic agent in older adolescents and young adults with sore throat. Inadequately treated Fn pharyngitis may result in suppurative complications such as peritonsillar abscess and Lemierre's syndrome. Data from the literature suggest that the incidence of life-threating complications in these age groups from Fn pharyngitis (Lemierre's syndrome) in the United States exceeds those associated with group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis (acute rheumatic fever). Using real-time PCR, we previ
