The Performance of a Rapid Coronavirus Disease 2019 Antigen Test in Rural Gabon.

Access to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) testing is limited in rural sub-Saharan Africa. We evaluated the performance of the Siemens CLINITEST® rapid coronavirus disease 2019 antigen test under real-life conditions during the pandemic in rural Gabon. From August 2021 to February 2022, 277 participants were tested in Sindara and Lambaréné, Gabon, via outpatient mobile services. Of these participants, 54.6% were female, with a median age of 29 years (interquartile range: 12-55). The test performance was analyzed for the main population and for SARS-CoV-2 infected su

Dynamics of Plasmodium species and genotype diversity in adults with asymptomatic infection in Gabon.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the diversity and dynamics of Plasmodium infection in serially collected samples from asymptomatic participants of a clinical trial assessing the efficacy and safety of ivermectin in Gabon. We checked whether the baseline sample reflected the P. falciparum genotype and Plasmodium species diversity seen over 7 days of follow-up. METHODS: Blood samples were collected at inclusion, every 8 hours until hour 72, daily until day 7, and on day 14. Plasmodium species was determined by qPCR and pfmsp1 length polymorphism was assessed for P. falciparum genotyping. RESULTS:

Genomic epidemiology of Streptococcus pyogenes from pharyngeal and skin swabs in Gabon.

UNLABELLED: The disease burden of Streptococcus pyogenes is particularly high in low- and middle-income countries. However, data on the molecular epidemiology of S. pyogenes in such regions, especially sub-Saharan Africa, are scarce. To address this, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of S. pyogenes from Gabon was performed to identify transmission clusters and provide valuable genomic data for public repositories. A total of 76 S. pyogenes isolates from 73 patients, collected between September 2012 and January 2013, were characterized by short-read whole-genome sequencing. The predominant emm type

No evidence of mpox virus circulation in putative animal reservoirs in Gabon wildlife.

OBJECTIVES: Mpox is a neglected viral endemic tropical disease in Central and Western African countries transmitted to humans by an animal. However, the natural reservoir of the virus remains elusive. In this study, we looked for potential reservoirs of the mpox virus (MPXV) in Gabonese wildlife to prevent future outbreaks and enrich the literature with additional data on animal reservoirs. METHODS: DNA was extracted from the livers and spleens from 2549 animals (bats [859], bushmeats [356], rodents [1309], and shrews [25]) collected between 2012 and 2021. DNA was analyzed by real-time and co

Investigation of urinary metabolomics in a phase I hookworm vaccine trial in Gabon.

Metabolomics provides a powerful tool to study physiological changes in response to various perturbations such as vaccination. We explored whether metabolomic changes could be seen after vaccination in a phase I trial where Gabonese adults living either in rural or semi-urban areas received the subunit hookworm vaccine candidates (Na-GST-1 and Na-APR-1 (M74) adjuvanted with Alhydrogel plus GLA-AF (n = 24) or the hepatitis B vaccine (n = 8) as control. Urine samples were collected and assayed using targeted 1H NMR spectroscopy. At baseline, a set of metabolites significantly distinguished rural

Exposure to Ebola Virus and Risk for Infection with Malaria Parasites, Rural Gabon.

An association between malaria and risk for death among patients with Ebola virus disease has suggested within-host interactions between Plasmodium falciparum parasites and Ebola virus. To determine whether such an interaction might also influence the probability of acquiring either infection, we used a large snapshot surveillance study from rural Gabon to test if past exposure to Ebola virus is associated with current infection with Plasmodium spp. during nonepidemic conditions. We found a strong positive association, on population and individual levels, between seropositivity for antibodies

Detection of Ebola Virus Antibodies in Fecal Samples of Great Apes in Gabon.

Based on a large study conducted on wild great ape fecal samples collected in regions of Gabon where previous human outbreaks of Ebola virus disease have occurred between 1994 and 2002, we provide evidence for prevalence of Zaire ebolavirus (EBOV)-specific antibodies of 3.9% (immunoglobulin G (IgG)) and 3.5% (immunoglobulin M (IgM)) in chimpanzees and 8.8% (IgG) and 2.4% (IgM) in gorillas. Importantly, we observed a high local prevalence (31.2%) of anti-EBOV IgG antibodies in gorilla samples. This high local rate of positivity among wild great apes raises the question of a spatially and tempor

Diversity and prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in two wild Galago species in Gabon.

In this study, we characterize the diversity and estimated infection levels of gastrointestinal parasites circulating in two galago species, Galago demidoff and G. thomasi in two sites situated in the Southeastern forests of Gabon. Our study reveals that eleven parasites including nine helminthes (Ascaris spp., Ankylostoma spp., Dicrocoelium spp., Gongylonema spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Lemuricola spp., Strongyloides spp. Trichostrongylus spp. and Trichuris spp.) and two protozoans (Balantidium spp. and Entamoeba spp.) may infect Galago spp. with high infection rates. The results show that: a

Clinical, environmental, and serologic surveillance studies of melioidosis in Gabon, 2012-2013.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, an environmental gram-negative bacillus, is the causative agent of melioidosis and a bio-threat agent. Reports of B. pseudomallei isolation from soil and animals in East and West Africa suggest that melioidosis might be more widely distributed than previously thought. Because it has been found in equatorial areas with tropical climates, we hypothesized that B. pseudomallei could exist in Gabon. During 2012-2013, we conducted a seroprevalance study in which we set up microbiology facilities at a large clinical referral center and prospectively screened all febrile pat

Molecular evidence of Wolbachia endosymbiosis in Mansonella perstans in Gabon, Central Africa.

The discovery of obligatory intracellular bacteria of the genus Wolbachia in filariae infecting humans led to the use of antibiotics as a potent treatment option. Mansonella perstans is the cause of the second most prevalent filariasis in Gabon, but so far reports on the presence of Wolbachia in this nematode have been inconsistent. We report on the presence of Wolbachia in M. perstans in patients from Gabon, which we identified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with primer sets specific for 16S rDNA and ftsZ. Sequence analysis revealed a single consensus sequence, which could be phylogene

[Sexual behavior and condom use by people living with HIV/AIDS in Gabon].

INTRODUCTION: The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Gabon in 2011 was 5% among subjects aged 15 to 49 years. The objective of this study was to describe sexuality and condom use among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) by comparing those living in the capital with those living in two provinces of Gabon: Ogowe-Maritime (Port-Gentil) and Ogowe-Moyen (Lambaréné). METHODS: A 5-month, cumulative, cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted between May 2009 and September 2010 among PLWH over the age of 18 years, attending Gabon treatment centres and treated with ARVs for at least six months. [Entomological survey in the historical focus of human African trypanosomiasis of Bendje (Gabon)].

The situation of human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) is poorly known in Gabon. Most of the historical foci have not been investigated for more than 15 years. Few cases are passively recorded from the historical focus of Bendjé; they involved mainly fishermen but determining their contamination site is difficult because of their mobility due to their activity. The presence of these cases in that focus could favour its reactivation if the vector is still there. In order to assess a potential transmission risk in that area, an entomological survey has been carried out in it. Traps w

Entomological patterns in the human African trypanosomiasis focus of Komo Mondah, Gabon.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of sleeping sickness is still considerable in the Komo Mondah focus, in spite of case-detection strategy. A combined strategy that associated both mass screening and vector control is effective for the control of the disease. In the perspective of a targeted vector control in main transmission sites, we have carried out an entomological survey in the epicentre of the focus. OBJECTIVES: To determine tsetse flies distribution, human-fly contact point and eventually risk factors for acquisition of the disease. METHODS: "Vavoua" traps were set for Glossina in four bioto

In vitro antiplasmodial activity and cytotoxicity of nine plants traditionally used in Gabon.

AIM OF THE STUDY: As part of a project to identify new compounds active on malarial parasites, we tested the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of nine plants traditionally used to treat malaria symptoms in Haut-Ogooué Province, South-East Gabon. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dichloromethane and methanolic extracts of each plant were tested for their antiplasmodial activity on two chloroquine-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum (FCB and W2), based on lactate dehydrogenase activity. Cytotoxicity was assessed with the MTT test on MRC-5 human diploid embryonic lung cells. RESULTS: The methanolic

A New STLV-1 in a household pet Cercopithecus nictitans from Gabon.

A recent serological survey of wild-born captive monkeys from Gabon, Central Africa, revealed that 1 of 20 Cercopithecus nictitans tested was infected with a new simian T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (STLV-1). We investigated the molecular relationship between the STLV-1 strain present in this C. nictitans (CN01) and the other available HTLV/STLV strains. Phylogenetic analysis of the env (gp46 and gp21) region showed that the new STLV(nict) clusters with the HTLV-1/STLV-1 group and not with the other nictitans STLVs belonging to the STLV-3 group. Moreover, our new STLV(nict) is closely relat

[Typhoid and paratyphoid fever in adults in the Internal Medicine Department at Libreville (Gabon)].

We carried out a retrospective study of 150 files of patients suffering from typhoid or paratyphoid fever, confirmed bacteriologically, between January 1992 and December 1996 at Libreville. Young adults were the most frequently affected. These infections were associated with unstable living conditions and lack of cleanliness. Neurological (17%), digestive (12%) and cardiovascular (3%) complications were the principal factors aggravating the disease. The following serotypes were identified: Salmonella typhi (47%), S. paratyphi B (25%), S. paratyphi C (20%) and S. paratyphi A (8%). Salmonellosis

[Tumor-related epilepsy in adults in Gabon: diagnostic problems and therapeutic management].

The incidence of supratentorial brain tumors revealed by epileptic seizure is certainly underestimated in developing countries due to the lack of adequate diagnostic facilities. This report describes 10 cases of tumor-related epilepsy observed in Gabon over a 54-month period. Tumor-related seizures accounted for 5% of patients hospitalized for epilepsy in neurosurgical and neurologic units in Gabon during the study period. In two patients who refused surgery, diagnosis of the tumor was made solely on angiographic findings. Surgery was performed in 8 patients based on electroencephalographic an
