Exploring animal protein sources against prevent age-related short-term memory decline in mice: Dietary fish (Alaska Pollock) protein exhibits superior protective effects.

Dietary factors, particularly proteins, have been extensively explored to combat cognitive impairment. We have previously reported that dietary fish (Alaska Pollock) protein (APP) is more effective than casein (CAS) or fish oil in maintaining short-term memory in senescence-accelerated mice prone 10 (SAMP10). To examine the specificity of the protective effect of APP intakes against short-term memory decline, we assessed the impact of various dietary animal proteins, including APP, CAS, chicken breast protein (CP), and whey protein (WP), against age-related cognitive function in SAMP10 mice. Molecular characterization of larval anisakid nematodes from marine fishes off the Moroccan and Mauritanian coasts.

A total of 242 larval forms of Anisakis collected from marine fishes at different sites off the Moroccan and Mauritanian coasts, recognised as belonging to Type I and Type II larvae, were identified by PCR-RFLP (Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms) of the ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacers) region (ITS-1, 5.8 subunit rRNA gene and ITS-2), using a previously established molecular key. The Type I larvae were found with a frequency of 98.34% and were identified as belonging to the following species: A. simplex s.str., A. pegreffii, A. simplex s.str/A. pegreffii hete

Characterization of the bacterial community associated with the surface and mucus layer of whiting (Merlangius merlangus).

The bacterial community inhabiting the mucus layer and surface of whiting was examined to determine whether the bacteria present are a reflection of the surrounding water or an indigenous bacterial flora is present. The outer mucus, mouth mucus and gut of four whiting harvested from a site in the Irish Sea and the surrounding water were examined by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (tRFLP) analysis of the 16S rRNA gene and clone library construction. The water community was the most diverse, with only a small number of shared water-mucus phylotypes present. The bacterial flora

Morphological differences between larvae and in vitro-cultured adults of Anisakis simplex (sensu stricto) and Anisakis pegreffii (Nematoda: Anisakidae).

Proper identification of Anisakis species infecting host fishes is very important to both human health and fish disease diagnosis. The foremost problem in the identification of Anisakis larvae in fishes is that L3 larvae cannot be easily differentiated morphologically, especially between A. simplex (sensu stricto) (s.s.) (Rudolphi, 1809) and A. pegreffii Campana-Rouget et Biocca, 1955. Instead, molecular means such as allozyme, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) cox2 region and polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analyses had been successfully used. In this stu

Detection of Cryptosporidium molnari oocysts from fish by fluorescent-antibody staining assays for cryptosporidium spp. affecting humans.

Three direct fluorescent-antibody staining assay kits for the detection of zoonotic Cryptosporidium species were used to detect Cryptosporidium molnari from Murray cod, and the cryptosporidia were characterized by using small-subunit (SSU) ribosomal DNA (rDNA). To facilitate rapid diagnosis of infection, this study demonstrated that all three kits detected fresh C. molnari and two kits detected formalin-fixed oocysts.

Different Th1/Th2 responses to Anisakis simplex are related to distinct clinical manifestations in sensitized patients.

Anisakis simplex is a fish parasite capable of inducing inflammatory and allergic reactions in humans who eat raw or undercooked fish. The aim of this study was to characterize the T helper type 1 (Th1)/Th2 immune response to parasite crude (CE) and thermostable (TsE) extracts in A. simplex-sensitized patients. Cytokines were quantified by a multiplex flow cytometric method in short-term whole blood cultures. Higher concentrations of IL-2, IL-4 and IL-5, measured with the CE and TsE, were found in patients than in controls. Patients showing urticaria-angio-oedema or anaphylaxis (UA/A) had high

Recent increase in Nybelinia surmenicola prevalence and intensity in Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) off the United States west coast.

A larval marine cestode was found in 82.0% of 834 Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) stomachs collected from 341 trawl stations along the United States west coast during the summers of 2008 and 2009. Morphology and DNA sequencing was used to identify the cestode as Nybelinia surmenicola. In an examination of 131 Pacific hake stomachs collected from the same region in 1999, N. surmenicola prevalence was 35.1%. The results from a general linear model suggested that their prevalence is influenced by year and latitude, Pacific hake size, and sex. Mean intensity of N. surmenicola in 2008-2009 was

Identification of larval Anisakis spp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae) in Alaska pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) in northern Japan using morphological and molecular markers.

The Alaska pollock, Theragra chalcogramma (Pallas), is an important raw source for surimi and other food products in Japan. However, Alaska pollock caught in the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions has been reported to harbor Anisakis species that pose considerable food safety problems. Here, we identified the third-stage (L3) Anisakis spp. sampled from Alaska pollock caught in northern Japan using a combination of morphological and molecular analyses which included PCR-RFLP and sequencing of the ITS (ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2) region and mtDNA cox2 gene markers. Four Anisakis spp. were confirmed, na

Gonadotropin characterization, localization and expression in the European hake (Merluccius merluccius).

In vertebrates, the regulation of gametogenesis is under the control of gonadotropins (Gth), follicle-stimulating hormone (Fsh) and luteinizing hormone (Lh). In fish, the physiological role of Gths is not fully understood, especially in species with asynchronous ovarian development. To elucidate the role of Gths in species with asynchronous ovary, we studied European hake (Merluccius merluccius) during the reproductive season. For this aim, we first cloned and sequenced both hormones. Then, we characterized their amino acid sequence and performed phylogenetic analyses to verify the relationshi

Atrial Fibrillation in Anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between anaphylaxis and cardiovascular events has been reported in the past. While skin and respiratory symptoms are usually the most common and the first to appear, cardiovascular complications play a key role and represent the leading cause of death in anaphylaxis. METHODS: We report 3 episodes of atrial fibrillation triggered by anaphylaxis. Allergy and cardiology studies were performed. In both patients, the etiological agent was identified: Anisakis simplex hypersensitivity and food allergy. RESULTS: The heart is the source and target of chemical mediators r

Two Antihypertensive and Antioxidant Peptides Derived from Alaska Pollack (Theragra chalcograma) Skin: In Silico, In Vitro, and In Vivo Investigation.

This study aimed to identify and characterize two novel dual-functional peptides with antihypertensive and antioxidant activities from byproducts of Alaska pollock skin (APS). Results showed that fifty-nine peptides were identified from APS, of which two peptides, GP1 (GSAGPAGPSGPRGP) and GP2 (LGDARNSPAPP), were predicted to exhibit the highest angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory and antioxidant activities. GP1 and GP2 demonstrated favorable ACE inhibitory activities (IC50 values of 0.166 and 0.177 mmol/L, respectively) and significantly reduced blood pressure in hypertensive rats.

Protective Effect of Cod (Gadus macrocephalus) Skin Collagen Peptides on Acetic Acid-Induced Gastric Ulcer in Rats.

This research was performed to explore the protective effect of cod skin collagen peptides (CCP) on gastric ulcer induced by acetic acid. The CCP were fractionated into low molecular CCP (LMCCP, Mw < 3 kDa) and high molecular CCP (HMCCP, Mw > 3 kDa). In HMCCP and LMCCP, glycine of accounted for about one-third of the total amino acids without cysteine and tryptophan, and hydrophobic amino acids accounted for about 50%. After 21 d CCP treatment (60 or 300 mg/kg, p.o./daily), the healing effects on acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers were evaluated by macroscopic measure, microscopic measure, and
