BACKGROUND: Gait patterns in children with myelomeningocele (MMC) at various neurological levels have been described, both with and without orthotic support. Although the neurological level of the lesion serves as an important predictor of ambulatory potential, the expected walking ability is not always achieved, as additional factors such as spasticity may influence gait negatively. The aim of this study was to retrospectively compare gait patterns as assessed in childhood with those observed in adulthood.
METHODS: Of 59 individuals with MMC aged 18 years or older, 29 had undergone three-dim

Gait disruptions following traumatic brain injury (TBI) are noted in the clinical population. To date, thorough analysis of gait changes in animal models of TBI to allow for correlation of pathological alterations and utilization of this as a therapeutic outcome have been limited. We therefore assessed gait using the DigiGait analysis system as well as overall locomotion using the Beam Walk test in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats following a commonly used model of TBI, parietal lobe controlled cortical impact (CCI). Rats underwent DigiGait baseline analysis 24 h prior to injury, followed by a m

INTRODUCTION: Spinocerebellar ataxia type 12 (SCA 12) is characterized by late onset tremor, ataxia and pyramidal signs. Parkinsonism and cognitive decline may appear with time. It is considered as slowly progressive but temporal evolution of symptoms has not been reported.
METHOD: We report the evolution of symptoms in three SCA12 patients followed over a range of 5-6 years. We focused on the evolution of gait abnormality as it becomes the most disabling symptom as disease advances. Two-dimensional gait parameters were studied using an electronic walkway at various time points to measure obj

Although, several thorax models have been proposed for clinical gait analysis, none has received widespread acceptance nor been subject to any extensive validation work, especially for the marker set to use. The aim of this study was thus to determine the optimal and minimal makers' placement on the thorax for clinical gait analysis. Ten healthy subjects have performed a series of movements (arm, head, trunk) with large amplitude during walking. Reflective markers were taped on the thorax (C7, T2, T4, T6, T8, T10, T12, sternum, clavicles and ribs) and their 3D positions were captured with an o

Lurcher mutant mice represent a model of olivocerebellar degeneration. Postnatally, a complete loss of Purkinje cells and secondary reduction of granule cells and inferior olive neurons occurs. Cerebellar ataxia is among the symptoms of degeneration of the cerebellum. The aim of the work was to identify gait parameters which are changed in Lurcher mice due to cerebellar ataxia arising from functional cerebellar decortication, and to assess the correlation between gait parameters, walking speed and performance in rotarod test. We used the adult Lurcher mutant and wild type mice of the B6CBA str

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Improving ambulation in patients with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) is a major challenge for the clinician. Physical examination can be supplemented with biomechanic information from the gait laboratory to comprehensively evaluate and improve walking. Gait analysis is an effective method to evaluate 3-dimensional dynamic joint range of motion (kinematics) and forces (kinetics) occurring at the hip, knee, and ankle/foot. Clinical gait analysis has proved to be essential for surgical and rehabilitative planning and posttreatment assessment in many neuromuscular disorders. Ben

Shock absorption becomes very important in damaged joints with destroyed cartilage and progressive muscular imbalance as occurs in hemarthropathy. The effects of silicone heel cushioning on the ankle motion of hemophilic patients in different stages of hemarthropathy of the ankle joints was measured using an ultrasound motion analysis system. It is concluded that silicone heel cushioning has no influence on ankles in the late stage of hemarthropathy. Silicone heel cushioning will lead to uncontrolled changes of the ankle joint in the early hemarthropathic ankle, involving the tibiotalar and th

Clinical and step evaluations by a piezoelectric system board were performed in 54 patients who underwent microsurgical reconstruction of the thumb by great or second toe transfer. Forty-four patients were male and 10 were female. In 13 cases, the thumb was reconstructed by the Morrison wrap-around technique. In 27 cases, an extended variant of the Morrison technique was used in which the whole distal phalanx was harvested with skin and nail apparatus. Four patients were treated by great toe transfer and 10 were treated by second toe transfer. Follow-up ranged from 2 to 144 months. The group o

This study aimed to determine the visual assessment skills during an observation-based gait analysis. Participants (N=40) included 20 physiotherapists (PTs) with>10 years of clinical experience (physiotherapists) and 20 physiotherapy students. Both groups watched a video of the gait of a subject with Guillain-Barré syndrome before and after being provided with information regarding other movements. Further, visual lines were measured using an EMR-8 eye mark recorder, and the results were compared between both groups. The average gaze duration was longer for students than for PTs (F1,79=53.3; p

Fracture healing is typically monitored by infrequent radiographs. Radiographs come at the cost of radiation exposure and reflect fracture healing with a time lag due to delayed fracture mineralization following increases in stiffness. Since union problems frequently occur after fractures, better and timelier methods to monitor the healing process are required. In this review, we provide an overview of the changes in gait parameters following lower leg fractures to investigate whether gait analysis can be used to monitor fracture healing. Studies assessing gait after lower leg fractures that w

Haemophilia is characterized by a congenital deficiency of clotting factor VIII or IX. One of the consequences of haemophilia is joint bleedings. Repetitive haemathroses induce cartilage damage and chronic synovitis leading to joint deterioration, and to definitive haemophilic arthropathy which is source of walking disability. Three-dimension gait analysis (3DGA) appears particularly relevant in the case of haemophilia because it allows an evaluation of several joints in weight-bearing situations. The purpose of this study was to review the interest and the contribution of 3DGA in the manageme

BACKGROUND: Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is a widely used animal model for multiple sclerosis. The characteristic feature of the MOG-EAE model in Brown Norway rats is consistent involvement of the spinal cord resulting in limb paresis. The aim of the study was to investigate whether early subclinical gait abnormalities are present in this animal model and can be detected by CatWalk XT, a fully automated gait analysis system. Furthermore, we investigated the usability of CatWalk system for treatment studies.
RESULTS: Our gait
