An entomological survey was conducted in the Gambia in January 1979, during the last phase of a yellow fever (YF) outbreak which began during the previous rainy season. In the dry conditions which prevailed in January, Aedes aegypti was the only YF vector present. Two YF virus strains were isolated from females of this mosquito species caught in a village of western Gambia, where active human cases were documented. The ae. aegypti breeding sites were exclusively of the domestic type. Larval indices varied greatly from place to place, but generally appeared to correlate with the incidence of di

BACKGROUND: Despite availability of effective treatment regimens for drug-susceptible Tuberculosis (TB), some patients still experience poor treatment outcomes. Currently tools for monitoring treatment outcomes are dependent on detection of mycobacteria in sputum, which are slow, expensive and poor at predicting relapse and failure. This study aims to identify new blood-derived markers for predicting treatment response and outcomes.
METHODS: Whole blood was collected in PAXgene tubes from patients with microbiologically confirmed TB at diagnosis, week 2, and at months 2, 4, and 6. Treatment r

Background: In many countries, non-pharmaceutical interventions to limit severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission resulted in significant reductions in other respiratory viruses. However, similar data from Africa are limited. We explored the extent to which viruses such as influenza and rhinovirus co-circulated with SARS-CoV-2 in The Gambia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Between April 2020 and March 2022, respiratory viruses were detected using RT-PCR in nasopharyngeal swabs from 1397 participants with influenza-like illness. An assay to detect SARS-Co

BACKGROUND: Invasive bacterial diseases (IBD) cause significant mortality in young infants. There are limited population-based data on IBD in young infants in Sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: We conducted population-based surveillance for IBD among infants aged 0-90 days in a demographic surveillance area in rural Gambia between 1 March 2011 and 31 December 2017. Infants admitted to health facilities within the study area had standardised clinical evaluation plus conventional microbiological investigation. We defined IBD as isolation of pathogenic bacteria from blood, cerebrospinal fluid, lung, o

INTRODUCTION: Violence against women remains a major public health concern in African countries. We conducted a matched case-control study to identify risk factors for recurrent violent injuries among African women in The Gambia, a small West African country.
METHODS: During the 12-month study period, we recruited study participants from eight emergency departments in the metropolitan areas of the municipality of Kanifing and the West Coast region. We selected women aged ≥15 years who sought medical treatment for an injury due to physical violence at least twice over the study period. Two con

Background: A 2010 survey in The Gambia among women of reproductive age put the prevalence rate of FGM/C at 76.3%. FGM/C was banned in 2015, but there is no real effort at enforcement of the ban. This study aimed to provide national data on obstetric outcomes to support advocacy and health education. A multicentre observational study to assess the obstetric and neonatal outcomes of parturient women with and without FGM/C was carried out across 4 healthcare facilities in The Gambia. The primary outcome was postpartum haemorrhage (>500ml) and secondary outcomes were caesarean section, perineal t

Background: The Gambia Demographic and Health Survey 2013 data showed that up to 63% of deliveries in the country occur in health facilities. Despite such a high rate, there are few facility-based studies on delivery outcomes in the country. This analysis ancillary to a randomized control trial describes occurrence of poor pregnancy outcomes in a cohort of women and their infants delivering in a government health facility in urban Gambia. Methods: Using clinical information obtained during the trial, we calculated rates of poor pregnancy outcomes including stillbirths, hospitalization and neon

A retrospective analysis of 78 maternal deaths was performed during 1991-1992 to estimate maternal mortality at the maternity unit of the main tertiary level hospital in The Gambia. The non-abortion maternal mortality ratio (MMR) was 736 per 100 000 live births. Among the direct causes, haemorrhage caused most deaths (24%), followed by hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) (21%). Sepsis was the main cause of death in 15%. Anaemia led among the indirect causes of death (8%) and was a co-factor in 41% of all deaths. Substandard care factors other than medical causes were determined involving

Interactions with caregivers play a crucial role in early development. While most of the world's children live in Majority World countries, research on caregiving predominantly uses measures developed in the Minority World (particularly North America and Europe), potentially biasing characterizations of parenting in understudied populations. This study describes the development of the "Demba Yaal Interaction Scale (DYIS)", a behavioral micro-coding scheme to assesses caregiver responsiveness in a rural, low-resource, collectivist caregiving community in The Gambia. We adopted a contextually se

A matched case-control study was conducted to identify risk factors for injury from physical violence and its severity in Gambian men. Study participants were recruited from eight emergency rooms and outpatient departments in two health administrative regions. Cases were male patients aged ⩾15 years who had been violently injured. A control patient for each case, matched for the hospital or health center, date of injury, gender, and age, was selected from those injured due to nonviolence causes. In total, 447 case-control pairs were recruited. Results of the conditional logistic regression ana

Trachoma is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct). It is targeted for global elimination as a public health problem. In 2014, a population-based cross-sectional study was performed in two previously trachoma-endemic areas of The Gambia. Participants of all ages from Lower River Region (LRR) (N = 1028) and Upper River Region (URR) (N = 840) underwent examination for trachoma and had blood collected for detection of antibodies against the Ct antigen Pgp3, by ELISA. Overall, 30 (1.6%) individuals had active trachoma; the prevalence in children aged 1-9 years was 3.4% (25/742) with no statistically

Melioidosis is due to Burkholderia pseudomallei and is known to be endemic in South-East Asia, while epidemiology of disease in Sub-Saharan Africa is still unclear. Prompt recognition of infection is crucial for adequate antibiotic treatment. Infection can lead to visceral abcesses and awareness of this complication is important for proper management.

The use of a wide and differentiated arsenal of psychopharmacological substances is integral part of modern psychiatric treatment in addition to non-pharmacological interventions (e.g., psychotherapy). However, worldwide the access to such medication can vary considerably. In this study, access to a wide range of psychiatric medication including antidepressants, antipsychotics, tranquilisers, mood stabilisers and ADHD medication was analysed for the Western African country of The Gambia by surveying private pharmacies within the urban and sub-urban areas of Banjul, the country's capital. Reduced survival and future reproduction due to of current reproduction is a trade-off known as the cost of reproduction. Surprisingly, only a few studies have assessed the cost of reproduction in arthropod disease vectors, despite its effect on longevity, and thus on vectorial capacity. We evaluated the cost of reproduction on survival of Anopheles gambiae Giles by comparing mosquitoes that were denied exposure to the other sex, hereafter named virgins, and those that were allowed exposure to the other sex and mating, hereafter named mated. Merely 6 d of exposure to females with mating activi

Insecticide resistance (IR) is one of the major obstacles in insect pests and insect borne disease control strategies, the mechanism of which is known to be genetically controlled. Three major gene families (CYP, GST and COE) have been identified encoding various proteins to metabolize endogenous as well as exogenous compounds that are responsible for IR mechanisms in insects. Understanding evolutionary patterns of genes of such important functions could lead to important understanding, based on which, further studies to control various insect borne infectious diseases could be initiated.
