The effect of heterogeneity of relative vaccine costs on the mean population vaccination rate with mpox as an example.

Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) is a neglected tropical disease that became notorious during its 2022-2023 worldwide outbreak. The vaccination was available, but there were inequities in vaccine access. In this paper, we extend existing game-theoretic models to study a population that is heterogeneous in the relative vaccination costs. We consider a population with two groups. We determine the Nash equilibria (NE), i.e., optimal vaccination rates, for each of the groups. We show that the NE always exists and that, for a narrow range of parameter values, there can be multiple NEs. We focus o

Cooperation in public goods game does not require assortment and depends on population density.

The threshold public goods game is one of the best-known models of non-linear public goods dilemmas. Cooperators and defectors typically coexist in this game when the population is assumed to follow the so-called structured deme model. In this article, we develop a dynamical model of a general N-player game in which there is no deme structure: Individuals interact with randomly chosen neighbours and selection occurs between randomly chosen pairs of individuals. We show that in the deterministic limit, the dynamics in this model leads to the same replicator dynamics as in the structured deme mo

Voluntary rewards mediate the evolution of pool punishment for maintaining public goods in large populations.

Punishment is a popular tool when governing commons in situations where free riders would otherwise take over. It is well known that sanctioning systems, such as the police and courts, are costly and thus can suffer from those who free ride on other's efforts to maintain the sanctioning systems (second-order free riders). Previous game-theory studies showed that if populations are very large, pool punishment rarely emerges in public good games, even when participation is optional, because of second-order free riders. Here we show that a matching fund for rewarding cooperation leads to the emer

Baccarat gamblers follow trends rather than adhere to the gambler's fallacy: Analyses of field data from a casino.

This study investigated the cognitive biases underlying baccarat gambling behaviors through an analysis of 17,970,830 games played by 6625 customers in a casino. Baccarat, a popular high-stakes game in East Asia, involves predicting the outcome of two hands, where the results are inherently unpredictable, similar to the structure of games such as roulette. In contrast to existing theories predicting the emergence of the gambler's fallacy-or negative recency-when the outcome generation mechanism is clearly random, most baccarat gamblers exhibit the opposite bias, demonstrating a tendency toward

People with autistic traits are more likely to engage with misinformation and conspiracy theories in a simulated social media context.

BACKGROUND: People with higher levels of autistic traits are shown to be more likely to endorse conspiracy theories and misinformation on traditional methods of measurement (e.g., self-report). However, such research has been limited by the lack of a naturalistic measure of misinformation and conspiracy theory endorsement that resembles social media platforms. METHOD: This study included measures of autistic traits, performance measures of critical reasoning and other notable covariates, to assess how participants performed in a simulated social media environment via the Misinformation Game,

Playing for better health: Gamification in digital workplace health promotion - A structured review of design elements, outcomes, and mechanisms from a self-determination theory perspective.

BACKGROUND: Digital technologies increasingly shape the work environment of knowledge workers and can negatively affect employee well-being. While organizations have introduced digital workplace health promotion programs to address these challenges, many initiatives struggle with low engagement. Gamification is considered a promising approach to enhance participation, yet it remains unclear how different game design elements influence various dimensions of employee well-being, leaving organizations with limited guidance on how to design effective gamified health interventions. OBJECTIVE: This

Resting high frequency heart rate variability selectively predicts cooperative behavior.

This study explores whether the vagal connection between the heart and the brain is involved in prosocial behaviors. The Polyvagal Theory postulates that vagal activity underlies prosocial tendencies. Even if several results suggest that vagal activity is associated with prosocial behaviors, none of them used behavioral measures of prosociality to establish this relationship. We recorded the resting state vagal activity (reflected by High Frequency Heart Rate Variability, HF-HRV) of 48 (42 suitale for analysis) healthy human adults and measured their level of cooperation during a hawk-dove gam

A Learning-Based Solution for an Adversarial Repeated Game in Cyber-Physical Power Systems.

Due to the rapidly expanding complexity of the cyber-physical power systems, the probability of a system malfunctioning and failing is increasing. Most of the existing works combining smart grid (SG) security and game theory fail to replicate the adversarial events in the simulated environment close to the real-life events. In this article, a repeated game is formulated to mimic the real-life interactions between the adversaries of the modern electric power system. The optimal action strategies for different environment settings are analyzed. The advantage of the repeated game is that the play

Gamification, game-based learning and serious games in palliative care education: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Games and gamified learning are increasingly used in healthcare education, including palliative care. However, the emotional complexity of palliative care may seem at odds with the fun-focused nature of games. While game-based learning has been studied in patient education, no systematic review has explored its use in training palliative care students and professionals. This review investigates the use of gamification and game-based learning in palliative care education for multidisciplinary healthcare professionals. METHOD: A systematic review was conducted across five databases.

A game theoretical model to examine pedestrian behaviour and safety on unsignalised slip lanes using AI-based video analytics.

Left-turn slip lanes, also known as channelised right-turn lanes in right-hand driving countries, are widely implemented to facilitate left-turning at signalised intersections. However, pedestrian safety on slip lanes is not well known. At unsignalised crosswalks, the joint decision-making process of both pedestrians and motorists is complex, involving joint communication dynamics, yet current research primarily focuses on examining individual decisions. This study proposes a game theory-based approach, formulating the interaction as a two-player, non-cooperative, simultaneous game to examine

Video games, frustration, violence, and virtual reality: Two studies.

The degree to which the content of video games influences aggression continues to be debated in the scholarly literature. The current article includes two studies, one of which replicates one study from Przybylski et al. (2014, J. Pers. Soc. Psychol., 106, 441) and the other which extends related concepts into virtual reality. In the first study, two versions of Tetris were examined, differing in levels of difficulty. In the second study, participants played virtual reality games which differed in regard to difficulty and violent content. Difficulty increased hostility in the second study but

Children's and adults' judgments of equitable resource distributions.

This study explored the criteria that children and adults use when evaluating the niceness of a character who is distributing resources. Four- and five-year-olds played the 'Giving Game', in which two puppets with different amounts of chips each gave some portion of these chips to the children. Adults played an analogous task that mimicked the situations presented to children in the Giving Game. For all groups of participants, we manipulated the absolute amount and proportion of chips given away. We found that children and adults used different cues to establish which puppet was nicer: 4-year-

Evolution of noisy learning in games.

People make strategic decisions many times a day-during negotiations, when coordinating actions with others, or when choosing partners for cooperation. The resulting dynamics can be studied with learning theory and evolutionary game theory. These frameworks explore how people adapt their decisions over time, in light of how effective their strategies have been. The outcomes of such learning processes depend on how sensitive individuals are to the performance of their strategies. When they are more sensitive, they systematically favor strategies they deem more successful. When they are less sen

Event-Specific Meteorological Drivers Shape Diverse Water-Use Efficiency Trajectories Under Drought Propagation.

Drought propagation from meteorological to soil drought marks a critical phase in regulating vegetation water-carbon dynamics, yet the response trajectories of water-use efficiency (WUE) during these events remain poorly understood. Here, combining global flux tower observations with simulations from Earth System Models (ESMs), we quantified the spatiotemporal patterns of drought propagation characteristics, identified WUE response trajectories for characteristic-specific droughts, and investigated their dominant drivers. We found that 58% of soil droughts follow meteorological droughts. Most

Ambush strategy enhances organisms' performance in rock-paper-scissors games.

We study a five-species cyclic system wherein individuals of one species strategically adapt their movements to enhance their performance in the spatial rock-paper-scissors game. Environmental cues enable the awareness of the presence of organisms targeted for elimination in the cyclic game. If the local density of target organisms is sufficiently high, individuals move towards concentrated areas for direct attack; otherwise, they employ an ambush tactic, maximising the chances of success by targeting regions likely to be dominated by opponents. Running stochastic simulations, we discover that

The probabilistic pool punishment proportional to the difference of payoff outperforms previous pool and peer punishment.

The public goods game is a multiplayer version of the prisoner's dilemma game. In the public goods game, punishment on defectors is necessary to encourage cooperation. There are two types of punishment: peer punishment and pool punishment. Comparing pool punishment with peer punishment, pool punishment is disadvantageous in comparison with peer punishment because pool punishment incurs fixed costs especially if second-order free riders (those who invest in public goods but do not punish defectors) are not punished. In order to eliminate such a flaw of pool punishment, this study proposes the p

Inclusive fitness in finite populations-effects of heterogeneity and synergy.

I review recent results concerning the relationship between the inclusive fitness (IF) effect and standard measures of allele fitness in a finite-population, with attention to the effect of heterogeneity in population structure and nonadditive fitness effects. In both cases, existing theoretical work is somewhat technical and I try to provide a more transparent account. In a heterogeneous population it is known that inclusive fitness will generally fail to incorporate the effects of selection on the distribution of alleles among states unless a reproductive-value weighting is used. But even gi

The dynamic consequences of cooperation and competition in small-world networks.

We present a study of the social dynamics among cooperative and competitive actors interacting on a complex network that has a small-world topology. In this model, the state of each actor depends on its previous state in time, its inertia to change, and the influence of its neighboring actors. Using numerical simulations, we determine how the distribution of final states of the actors and measures of the distances between the values of the actors at local and global levels, depend on the number of cooperative to competitive actors and the connectivity of the actors in the network. We find that

Replicator dynamics in public goods games with reward funds.

Which punishment or rewards are most effective at maintaining cooperation in public goods interactions and deterring defectors who are willing to freeload on others' contribution? The sanction system is itself a public good and can cause problematic "second-order free riders" who do not contribute to the provisions of the sanctions and thus may subvert the cooperation supported by sanctioning. Recent studies have shown that public goods games with punishment can lead to a coercion-based regime if participation in the game is optional. Here, we reveal that even with compulsory participation, re
