Anatomical Analysis of the Cervical Sympathetic Ganglion and Spinal Ganglion and its Physiological Significance in the Pathogenesis of Cervical Vertigo.

OBJECTIVE: Investigating the anatomical connections between cervical sympathetic ganglia and spinal ganglia in rabbits and assessing the role of Neuropeptide Y in the pathogenesis of cervical vertigo. METHOD: Part 1: 32 adult healthy male New Zealand white rabbits (whose skin is very sensitive, so rabbits are generally used for stimulation experiments) were randomly divided into the upper cervical sympathetic ganglia (SCSG) stimulation group and the lower cervical sympathetic ganglia (ICSG) stimulation group, with 16 rabbits in each group. The two groups were divided into an experimental grou

A neural network model of Parkinson's disease bradykinesia.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is caused by dopamine (DA) depletion consequent to cell degeneration in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA). Although computational analyses of PD have focused on DA depletion in DA-recipient parts of the basal ganglia, there is also extensive DAergic innervation of the frontal and parietal cortex as well as the spinal cord. To understand PD bradykinesia, a comprehensive network model is needed to study how patterns of DA depletion at key cellular sites in the basal ganglia, cortex and spinal cord contribute to disordered neuro

Locations and innervation of cell bodies of sympathetic neurons projecting to the gastrointestinal tract in the rat.

The locations of cell bodies of sympathetic neurons projecting to the stomach, the duodenum, the ileum, the colon, the spleen and the pancreas have been studied using retrograde tracing. Projections arose from both pre- and paravertebral ganglia. In the rat, the prevertebral ganglia are the paired coeliac ganglia lying caudo-lateral to the root of the coeliac artery, paired splanchnic ganglia in the abdominal segments of the greater splanchnic nerves, unpaired superior mesenteric and inter-renal ganglia and the inferior mesenteric ganglia. The projections from the prevertebral sympathetic gang

Trigeminal and dorsal root ganglion neurons express CCK receptor binding sites in the rat, rabbit, and monkey: possible site of opiate-CCK analgesic interactions.

125I-Bolton-Hunter sulfated cholecystokinin-8 was used to localize and characterize cholecystokinin (CCK) receptor binding sites in trigeminal and dorsal root ganglia, and in the spinal cord of the rat, rabbit, and monkey. In the rabbit and monkey, a substantial number, 90 +/- 21% and 24 +/- 8%, respectively, of trigeminal and dorsal root ganglion neurons express CCK binding sites. In the spinal cord, the highest concentration of CCK receptors is found in laminae I and II, which is the major termination site of dorsal root ganglia neurons expressing CCK receptor binding sites. Neonatal capsaic

CHox11L2, a Hox11 related gene, is expressed in the peripheral nervous system and subpopulation of the spinal cord during chick development.

cHox11L2, the chick counterpart of mouse Hox11L2, was isolated. cHox11L2 was expressed in the developing chick peripheral nervous system, i.e. sensory cranial nerves of placodal ectoderm origin, sympathetic ganglia, dorsal root ganglia and enteric ganglia as well as a limited regions of the spinal cord. In neuronal derivatives of the neural crest, cHox11L2 was expressed in the postmigratory cells and not in the migrating neural crest cells. Furthermore, intense signals of cHox11L2 mRNA were detected also in the spinal cord and the dorsal roots of 10-day embryos. No transcripts were detected in

[The segmental distribution of the afferent neurons of the "zusanli" point and the caecum in rabbits--a study with the horseradish peroxidase method].

Ten adult rabbits were used in this experiment. A solution of 10-20% HRP (sigma IX, RZ = 3.2) was injected into the "Zusanli" point and the subserosa of the caecum. The uptake and retrograde transmission of HRP in the afferent neurons of both the somatic and visceral nerves were traced to the spinal ganglia. The results showed that: 1. Labelled afferent neurons from the region of "Zusanli" point were found in the spinal ganglia T12-S2 with a higher concentration in L4-S2. 2. Labelled afferent neurons from the region of the caecum were found in the spinal ganglia T2-S2 with a higher concentrati

The histopathogenesis of paralytic rabies in six-week-old C57BL/6J mice following inoculation of the CVS-11 strain into the right triceps surae muscle.

A fatal encephalomyelitis was developed after intracerebral and hind limb inoculation of in 6-week-old C57BL/6J mice by the inoculation of fixed rabies virus (CVS-11 strain), intracerebrally and into hind. After the intracerebral inoculation, virus antigens were detected in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus at 2 days postinoculation (PI), and later spread centrifugally to thalamus, brain stem, cerebellum, spinal cord and spinal ganglia. At 4 days PI, severe apoptosis and DNA fragmentation were observed in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex. All mice infected intracerebrally were dead withou

Identification of cytokines and signaling proteins differentially regulated by sumatriptan/naproxen.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to use protein array analysis to investigate temporal regulation of stimulated cytokine expression in trigeminal ganglia and the spinal trigeminal nucleus in response to co-treatment of sumatriptan and naproxen sodium or individual drug. BACKGROUND: Activation of neurons and glia in trigeminal ganglia and the spinal trigeminal nucleus leads to increased levels of cytokines that promote peripheral and central sensitization, which are key events in migraine pathology. While recent clinical studies have provided evidence that a combination of sumatriptan an

Morphological identification of thoracolumbar spinal afferent nerve endings in mouse uterus.

Major sensory innervation to the uterus is provided by spinal afferent nerves, whose cell bodies lie predominantly in thoracolumbar dorsal root ganglia (DRG). While the origin of the cell bodies of uterine spinal afferents is clear, the identity of their sensory endings has remained unknown. Hence, our major aim was to identify the location, morphology, and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-immunoreactivity of uterine spinal afferent endings supplied by thoracolumbar DRG. We also sought to determine the degree of uterine afferent innervation provided by the vagus nerve. Using an anterogra

Origins of nitric oxide synthase-containing nerve fibers in the rat basilar artery with reference to the fine structure of the nerve fibers.

The origins of nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-containing nerve fibers in the rat basilar artery were studied by a combination of Fluoro-Gold retrograde tracing and immunohistochemistry. After application of Fluoro-Gold onto the middle part of the basilar artery, the dye accumulated in the sphenopalatine, otic, trigeminal, superior cervical, nodose ganglia and in the spinal ganglia at level C2 and C3. Nerve cells with NOS-like immunoreactivity were detected in the above ganglia, except for the superior cervical ganglion. Neurons that showed both NOS-like immunoreactivity and Fluoro-Gold fluorescen

Parkinson's disease with involvement of the parasympathetic ganglia.

We report the distribution of Lewy bodies in an 83-year-old man who was diagnosed histopathologically as having Parkinson's disease. Many sections were taken from the brain, spinal cord, spinal dorsal root ganglia and peripheral autonomic systems. In the central nervous system, Lewy bodies were present in many of the areas already reported by previous authors. In the peripheral nervous system, Lewy bodies were present in the sympathetic ganglia, enteric nervous system of the alimentary tract and the submandibular ganglion, which is a peripheral parasympathetic ganglion. The present case indica

Temporal expression of cytokines and their receptors mRNAs in a neuropathic pain model.

Proinflammatory mediators, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha, interleukin (IL)-1beta and IL-6 have been found to play a key role in the propagation of persistent pain states. We investigated the temporal expressions of the mRNAs and the receptor mRNAs of TNFalpha, IL-1beta and IL-6 in rat dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord in a chronic constriction injury model of neuropathic pain. Our results show that the maximal induction of IL-6 mRNA occurred later and was more sustained than those of TNFalpha and IL-1beta mRNAs in the dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord following chronic injury.

ATF2, but not ATF3, participates in the maintenance of nerve injury-induced tactile allodynia and thermal hyperalgesia.

Transcription factors are proteins that modulate the transcriptional rate of target genes in the nucleus in response to extracellular or cytoplasmic signals. Activating transcription factors 2 (ATF2) and 3 (ATF3) respond to environmental signals and maintain cellular homeostasis. There is evidence that inflammation and nerve injury modulate ATF2 and ATF3 expression. However, the function of these transcription factors in pain is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the contribution of ATF2 and ATF3 to nerve injury-induced neuropathic pain. L5/6 spinal nerve ligation induced ta

Cranial and spinal nerve organization in amphioxus and lampreys: evidence for an ancestral craniate pattern.

The spinal nerves in amphioxus are compared with the spinal and cranial nerves in lampreys. The dorsal spinal roots in amphioxus are similar to the mixed sensory and motor dorsal roots of many cranial nerves in lampreys but not to the purely sensory dorsal spinal roots in lampreys and gnathostomes. Likewise, cranial nerves V, VII, IX and X in lampreys, and all spinal nerves in amphioxus, lack a separate ventral motor root which is a constant feature of all spinal motor roots in lampreys and other vertebrates. Based on these similarities and differences, it is proposed that cranial and spinal n

Important interaction between urethral taste bud-like structures and Onuf's nucleus following spinal subarachnoid hemorrhage: A hypothesis for the mechanism of dysorgasmia.

BACKGROUND: We previously postulated that orgasmic sensation may occur through recently discovered genital taste bud-like structures. The interaction between the pudendal nerve and Onuf's nucleus may be important for developing orgasmic information. The study aims to investigate whether ischemic damage to Onuf's nucleus-pudendal network following spinal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) causes taste bud degeneration or not. METHODS: The study was conducted on 22 fertile male rabbits who were divided into three groups: control (GI; n=5), SHAM (GII; n=5) and study (GIII; n=12). Isotonic solution, .

Coronary artery occlusion alters expression of substance P and its mRNA in spinal dorsal horn in rats.

The painful sensation during acute myocardial ischemia or infarction is a common symptom and results from neural activity in humans. Little is known about the role of neuropeptides in this effect of myocardial ischemia. The aim of the current study was to investigate the role of substance P in mediating the noxious neural signals in spinal cord in acute myocardial ischemia by exploring the change in substance P and its mRNA in thoracic dorsal root ganglia and spinal dorsal horn (T1-T5) after coronary artery occlusion. The experiment was performed with immunohistochemistry, enzyme immunoassay a

Total activity, isoenzyme pattern of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), morphological peculiarities of normal and transplanted in the mesentery for 1-7 and 30 days dorsal root and superior cervical sympathetic ganglia of the adult rats, were analysed. About 30% neurons in sensory ganglia and 5% in sympathetic ganglia were viable 30 days after transplantation. Total LDH activity was 3 times higher in normal sympathetic ganglia compared with that in spinal ganglia. Transplantation leads to a slight rising in total LDH activity in sensory root ganglia and to a slight fall in sympathetic ganglia. Five f

Involvement of the peripheral nervous system in synucleinopathies, tauopathies and other neurodegenerative proteinopathies of the brain.

Involvement of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) is relatively common in some neurodegenerative proteinopathies of the brain and may be pathogenetically and diagnostically important. In Parkinson's disease, neuronal alpha-synuclein aggregates are distributed throughout the nervous system, including the central nervous system (CNS), sympathetic ganglia, enteric nervous system, cardiac and pelvic plexuses, submandibular gland, adrenal medulla and skin. The pathological process may target the PNS and CNS at the same time. In multiple system atrophy, numerous glial cytoplasmic inclusions compose
