Compression neuropathy of the common peroneal nerve secondary to a ganglion cyst.

There are various causes of the common peroneal nerve palsy. However, common peroneal nerve palsy caused by ganglia are uncommon. We hereby present a case of a 55-year-old man with a 1 week history of foot drop and swelling in the region of the right leg. Physical examination and nerve conduction study studies confirmed a diagnosis of common peroneal nerve palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a lobulated, elongated cystic-appearing mass anterior to the head of fibula. Surgical decompression of the nerve with removal of the mass was performed. Surgical pathology reports confirmed th

An intraneural ganglion cyst causing unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy.

Intracranial ganglion cysts are rare. We report a patient with a rare unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy caused by an intraneural ganglion cyst. To our knowledge, there are only four reports of ganglion/synovial cysts causing unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy. Our aim is to present the fifth report, and to compare our findings with the others.

Unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy caused by an intraneural ganglion cyst.

The authors describe a rare case of unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy caused by an intraneural ganglion cyst. Three similar cases have been reported with pathological classification still under consideration. One case was classified as an intraneural ganglion cyst and 2 cases were classified as atlantooccipital joint synovial cysts.

An unusual meniscal ganglion cyst that triggered recurrent hemarthrosis of the knee.

A 58-year-old woman suffered spontaneous recurrent hemarthrosis of the knee. In the clinical course, pigmented villonodular synovitis was mostly suspected, but in arthroscopic surgery the lateral meniscus appeared to be upturned and stuck into the lateral pouch with the meniscal ganglion cyst. It was suggested that meniscal tear with meniscal ganglion cyst was related with recurrent hemarthrosis. Generally, both the meniscal ganglion cysts and spontaneous recurrent hemarthrosis are highly rare conditions. In this case, we speculated that a negligible power could induce the meniscal tear with r

A ganglion cyst that developed from the infrapatellar fat pad of the knee.

A ganglion cyst may be seen in all joints with varying frequency depending on location, but it is rare in the knee joint. A 30-year-old man presented with a mass in the anterolateral aspect of his left knee. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intra-articular tumor arising from the infrapatellar fat pad of the knee. This multilobular tumor showed low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. Complete open resection was performed after arthroscopic examination. Histologic examination of the specimen confirmed the diagnosis of ganglion cyst. At th

Recurrent intraneural ganglion cyst of the tibial nerve. Case report.

Different theories have evolved to explain the pathogenesis and the cell of origin of intraneural ganglion cysts. Reportedly only three cases of intraneural ganglion of the tibial nerve have been located within the popliteal fossa, and all of these were thought to arise within the nerve. The authors report a case of a recurrent tibial intraneural ganglion in which a connection to the proximal tibiofibular joint was demonstrated on magnetic resonance (MR) images and at surgery. Surgical ligation of the articular branch and evacuation of the cyst led to symptomatic relief, and an MR image obtain

Localized depigmentation after steroid injection of a ganglion cyst on the hand.

Presented is the case of a man who had localized depigmentation after local injection of triamcinolone diacetate. Search of the literature indicates that this is a rare complication of such therapy. Localized depigmentation may have important cultural implications for dark-skinned patients. There is some experimental evidence that less-potent and shorter-acting steroid preparations have a lower likelihood for depigmenting side effects, and such agents may be more appropriate when injecting subcutaneous structures to prevent this complication.

Rare Entrapment of the Deep Peroneal Nerve by a Ganglion Cyst at the Ankle.

Entrapment of the deep peroneal nerve (DPN) is an uncommon yet clinically significant cause of lateral ankle and dorsal foot pain. Among its rare etiologies, ganglion cysts are often overlooked during initial assessments. We present a case of a 56-year-old woman who reported a six-month history of progressive, electric shock-like pain on the dorsum of her left foot, accompanied by a firm mass on the anterolateral ankle. The pain became constant after three months. A physical exam showed a slightly mobile mass and a positive Tinel sign around the DPN. An MRI revealed a cystic lesion compressing

Rare Ganglion Cyst of the First Metatarsophalangeal Joint: A Case Report.

Ganglion cysts are common benign lesions arising from joint capsules or tendon sheaths, but their occurrence in the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint is extremely rare. Preoperative diagnosis of subcutaneous tumors in this region can be difficult, as imaging findings are often nonspecific and biopsy may be avoided due to the risk of nerve or vessel injury. We report the case of a woman in her 70s who presented with a slowly enlarging subcutaneous mass on the medial aspect of the right first MTP joint. MRI and ultrasound suggested a cystic lesion but failed to confirm continuity with the jo

Angioleiomyoma of the Foot Presenting as a Ganglion Cyst: A Case of Mistaken Identity.

Angioleiomyoma is an uncommon benign neoplasm originating from the smooth muscle of vascular walls, typically presenting as a painful subcutaneous mass in the lower extremities of middle-aged adults. However, atypical features such as painless growth and unusual anatomical locations can obscure the diagnosis, particularly when limited imaging modalities are used. We present the case of a 62-year-old woman with a 10-month history of right ankle discomfort and a recently enlarging, painless soft-tissue mass over the anterior aspect of the ankle. Radiographic evaluation revealed a subtle soft-tis

Posterolateral Bundle Resection for an Anterior Cruciate Ligament Ganglion Cyst.

The incidence of intra-articular ganglion cysts of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is low and symptomatic presentation of this pathology is even lower. Nevertheless, symptomatic cases pose a real challenge for the orthopaedic community, as no general consensus exists regarding the most appropriate treatment. The purpose of this Technical Note is to describe the surgical treatment of an ACL ganglion cyst by arthroscopic resection of the entire posterolateral bundle of the ACL in a figure-of-four position after conservative treatment has failed.

Volar Ganglion Cyst and Echo-Guided Assistance for the Arthroscopic Removal.

The ganglion of the wrist is very common but with uncertain prognosis. The arthroscopic resection seems to improve the result compared with open procedure, in decreasing recurrence and morbidity. Volar ganglions are close to the radial artery, the flexor pollicis longus tendon, and even the median nerve. Ultrasonography combined with arthroscopy offers incomparable safety for the resection of volar ganglions. The technical steps of this combined procedure are described, and the first published series are discussed.

Spinal ganglion cyst presenting with radiculopathy: diagnostic challenges and differential.

INTRODUCTION: Ganglion cysts are benign soft tissue lesions, usually arising from periarticular connective tissue. These are very rarely reported in the spine, but when seen can cause radiculopathy or myelopathy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old female patient presented with worsening radiculopathy and right foot drop and imaging noted a right L5-S1 foraminal mass. The lesion was gross totally resected. Histological analysis revealed myxoid degeneration and inflammation, without a synovial lining, consistent with ganglion cyst. DISCUSSION: While uncommon, intra-foraminal ganglion cysts can b

An intra-articular ganglion cyst in a patient with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

We report an intra-articular ganglion cyst (IAGC) presenting as knee pain and a mass in a patient with longstanding Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). We could not find a similar case of an IAGC occurring in the knee of JIA patients in the literature. IAGC may need to be included as a possibility in patients with inflammatory arthritis with new-onset knee pain, especially in those with a palpable mass. MRI was useful in distinguishing IAGC from more worrisome causes of a knee mass. Orthopedic input was helpful in diagnosis and treatment. In addition, methotrexate therapy was effective in bri

A rare case of intraneural ganglion cyst involving the tibial nerve.

Cystic lesions around the knee are a relatively common occurrence. Several types of cysts have been reported, including synovial, bursal, and ganglion. Ganglion cysts are not lined by synovial cells. Their location is highly variable, with occurrences described in the fat pads near the tibia or femur, muscles, nerves, and arteries. Intraneural ganglia are rare nonneoplastic cysts caused by the accumulation of thick mucinous fluid within the epineurium of peripheral nerves, encased in a dense fibrous capsule. These cysts can cause compression of the adjacent nerve fascicles, resulting in pain,

Ganglion cyst of the posterior longitudinal ligament causing lumbar radiculopathy.

Degenerated conditions such as herniated disc or spinal stenosis are common etiologies of lumbar radiculopathy. Less common etiologies include spinal extradural cyst such as synovial cysts and ganglion cysts. Ganglion cyst of the posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) of the spine is a rare entity that can result in classical sciatica. Posterior longitudinal ligament cyst has no continuity with the facet joint and has no epithelial lining. Two young male patients presented with unilateral sciatica and were found to have intraspinal cystic lesions causing lumbar radiculopathy. Magnetic resonance
