Right stellate ganglion stimulation modulates arrhythmogenesis in acute left lateral ventricular ischaemia.

AIMS: Acute myocardial ischaemia causes fatal arrhythmias as result of a flow of 'injury current'. Left stellate ganglion stimulation (LSGS) modulates the injury current and is arrhythmogenic during left anterior ventricular wall ischaemia. The role of right stellate ganglion stimulation (RSGS) in arrhythmogenesis is unclear. We hypothesized that RSGS is proarrhythmic during left lateral ventricular wall ischaemia. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 11 anaesthetized female pigs, ventricular repolarization was measured in unipolar epicardial electrograms from the left lateral ventricular wall. Seven subs

Exploring the Influence of Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation on Sleep Behavior in Patients With Chronic Pain.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain is associated with sleep disturbances, with >70% of patients reporting clinically significant insomnia. Although dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRGS) is an established therapy for focal neuropathic pain, its impact on sleep has not been well characterized. This study evaluated changes in patient-reported insomnia after DRGS and examined associations among sleep, pain, and functional outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients from a prospective DRGS registry treated between 2018 and 2025. Patients with baseline Insomnia Severity Index (I

Percutaneous Short-Term Trigeminal Ganglion Electrical Stimulation for Treating Intractable Postherpetic Neuralgia.

Head and facial herpes zoster is more prone to developing into postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Pharmacological treatments are often ineffective, and electrical stimulation therapy is one treatment option. The authors present a case of a 75-year-old female patient with PHN for 3 months, who was treated with short-term trigeminal ganglion electrical stimulation (GGS), resulting in effective alleviation of her pain symptoms.

Temporary Gasserian ganglion stimulation utilizing SNM electrode in subacute herpetic trigeminal neuralgia.

OBJECTIVE: Gasserian ganglion stimulation (GGS) is a neuromodulation technique that has been extensively applied in treating postherpetic trigeminal neuralgia. However, permanent implantation of GGS was preferred in most treatment approaches. Few studies have investigated temporary GGS for the treatment of acute/subacute herpetic trigeminal neuralgia. Moreover, previous research has reported lead dislocation when utilizing traditional electrodes, which was associated with poor pain relief. In GGS research, preventing the accidental displacement of lead following implantation has consistently b

Direct Mechanical Stimulation Mediates Cell-to-Cell Interactions in Cultured Trigeminal Ganglion Cells.

Trigeminal neuralgia occurs in the orofacial region, characteristically causing pain that feels like a transient electric shock. Some histopathological studies have reported that trigeminal neuralgia is caused by mechanical compression of the demyelinated trigeminal nerve; the pathophysiological mechanism behind this phenomenon remains to be clarified, however. Cell-cell interactions have also been reported to be involved in the development and modulation of some types of neuropathic pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential contribution of cell-cell interactions to trig

3D Ti3C2Tx MXene-Matrigel with Electroacoustic Stimulation to Promote the Growth of Spiral Ganglion Neurons.

Cochlear implantation has become the most effective treatment method for patients with profound and total hearing loss. However, its therapeutic efficacy is dependent on the number and normal physiological function of cochlear implant-targeted spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs). Electrical stimulation can be used as an effective cue to regulate the morphology and function of excitatory cells. Therefore, it is important to develop an efficient cochlear implant electroacoustic stimulation (EAS) system to study the behavior of SGNs. In this work, we present an electrical stimulation system constructe

Naturalistic spatiotemporal modulation of epiretinal stimulation increases the response persistence of retinal ganglion cell.

Objective.Retinal stimulation in blind patients evokes the sensation of discrete points of light called phosphenes, which allows them to perform visually guided tasks, such as orientation, navigation, object recognition, object manipulation and reading. However, the clinical benefit of artificial vision in profoundly blind patients is still tenuous, as several engineering and biophysical obstacles keep it far away from natural perception. The relative preservation of the inner retinal neurons in hereditary degenerative retinal diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa, supports artificial vision

Development and Application of Cochlear Implant-Based Electric-Acoustic Stimulation of Spiral Ganglion Neurons.

Cochlear implants are currently the most effective treatment for profound sensorineural hearing loss. However, their therapeutic effect is limited by the survival and proper physiological function of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs), which are targeted by the cochlear implant. It is therefore critical to explore the mechanism behind the effect of electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) on the targeted SGNs. In this work, a biocompatible cochlear implant/graphene EAS system was created by combining a cochlear implant to provide the electrically transformed sound stimulation with graphene as the condu

Effectiveness and Safety of Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation for the Treatment of Chronic Pain: A Pooled Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Since it became available in the mid-2010s, dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation has become part of the armamentarium to treat chronic pain. To date, one randomized controlled trial, and several studies of moderate sample size and various etiologies have been published on this topic. We conducted a pooled analysis to investigate the generalizability of individual studies and to identify differences in outcome between chronic pain etiologic subgroups and/or pain location. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One prospective, randomized comparative trial and six prospective, single-arm, obser

Current Approaches to Neuromodulation in Primary Headaches: Focus on Vagal Nerve and Sphenopalatine Ganglion Stimulation.

Neuromodulation is a promising, novel approach for the treatment of primary headache disorders. Neuromodulation offers a new dimension in the treatment that is both easily reversible and tends to be very well tolerated. The autonomic nervous system is a logical target given the neurobiology of common primary headache disorders, such as migraine and the trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs). This article will review new encouraging results of studies from the most recent literature on neuromodulation as acute and preventive treatment in primary headache disorders, and cover some possible und

Trigeminal and sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation for intractable craniofacial pain--case series and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Facial pain is often debilitating and can be characterized by a sharp, stabbing, burning, aching, and dysesthetic sensation. Specifically, trigeminal neuropathic pain (TNP), anesthesia dolorosa, and persistent idiopathic facial pain (PIFP) are difficult diseases to treat, can be quite debilitating and an effective, enduring treatment remains elusive. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed our early experience with stimulation involving the trigeminal and sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation for TNP, anesthesia dolorosa, and PIFP between 2010-2014 to assess the feasibility of implan

Dorsal Root Ganglionic Field Stimulation Relieves Spontaneous and Induced Neuropathic Pain in Rats.

UNLABELLED: Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) electrical stimulation (ganglionic field stimulation [GFS]) is effective in relieving clinical pain, but its mechanism is unknown. We therefore developed a rat model for GFS to test analgesic effects in the context of neuropathic pain. GFS was applied with a bipolar electrode at L4, using parameters replicating clinical use (20 Hz, 150-μs pulse width, current at 80% of motor threshold). Neuropathic pain was generated by tibial nerve injury (TNI). Pain behavior was monitored by determining the threshold for withdrawal from punctate mechanical stimuli, by i

Atrial ganglionated plexi stimulation may be an effective therapeutic tool for the treatment of heart failure.

An autonomic imbalance, i.e., increased sympathetic tone and/or decreased parasympathetic tone is a critical characteristic of heart failure, which is associated with progressive ventricular remodeling, ventricular arrhythmia generation and disease progression. Increasing cardiac parasympathetic tone by vagus nerve stimulation has been shown to significantly improve heart failure symptoms, hemodynamics, left ventricular function and quality of life. However, cervical surgery is needed to position vagal stimulation electrode and vagus nerve stimulation may also cause some undesired side effects

Exogenously stimulated gastric secretion in dogs after ganglion and sympathetic blockade and antral acidification.

1 In conscious dogs with gastric fistulae, Heidenhain pouches and in some cases, innervated pyloric pouches, ganglionic blockade augmented Heidenhain pouch acid secretion only if the gastric fistula remained closed in animals receiving pentagastrin. 2 Ganglionic blockade depressed methacholine-stimulated acid and pepsin secretion from the Heidenhain pouch whether or not the fistula was open. 3 Acidification of the antral pouch consistently augmented the acid and pepsin secretion from the Heidenhain pouch when either pentagastrin or methacholine was the stimulus. Ganglionic blockade prevented t

Bilateral T12 Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation for the Treatment of Low Back Pain With 20-Hz and 4-Hz Stimulation, a Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is one of the most common chronic pain conditions that cause both individual suffering and a burden to society. For these patients, several interventional treatment options such as surgery, blocks, radiofrequency, and spinal cord stimulation are available. Lately, dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRG-S) also has been mentioned as an option by targeting bilateral T12 dorsal ganglia. In this study, we present the outcome of 11 patients with CLBP treated with bilateral T12 DRG-S. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with CLBP with and without leg pai

Towards a nonlinear "neuroimmune gate-model": beyond stellate ganglion block and vagus nerve stimulation.

We propose a three-level neuroimmune gate model to characterize the communication between the nervous system and the immune system. The first gate, Gate 1, is the peripheral neuroimmune gate. Here, immune cells, inflammatory mediators, sensory neurons, autonomic nervous system neurons, blood vessels, and specific tissue components interact. The second gate, Gate 2, is the spinal neuroimmune gate and includes spinal afferents, spinal neurons and circuits, preganglionic sympathetic neurons, and microglia. The third gate, Gate 3, comprises supraspinal structures, including the nucleus tractus sol

A Novel Method of Noninvasive Sphenopalatine Ganglion Stimulation in Craniofacial Pain: Case Series and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Implanted sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) stimulation is a well-established treatment for cluster headaches, but its use in other headache disorders remains limited. The development of noninvasive, transmucosal SPG stimulation offers a potential alternative to implanted SPG stimulation devices that eliminates the need for an invasive implantation procedure, which could expand its indications beyond cluster headaches. With this proof-of-concept study including a case series and a literature review, we aimed to determine the safety and clinical effectiveness of noninvasive SPG stimulat
