Aged (Black) versus Raw Garlic against Ischemia/Reperfusion-Induced Cardiac Complications.

Recent evidence from studies suggests that aged black garlic also has an effect on health. The major aim of the present study is to compare the effect of raw and aged black garlic on postischemic cardiac recovery. Male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups. Animals of the first group were fed with raw garlic, animals of the second group received aged black garlic, while the third group served as vehicle-treated controls. Upon conclusion of the treatment, isolated hearts were undertaken to ischemia/reperfusion. Heart function and infarct size were measured and the level of

Garlic-derived natural polysulfanes as hydrogen sulfide donors: Friend or foe?

In vitro and in vivo studies reported the anti-cancer potential of organosulfur compounds (OSCs) as they trigger biological effects leading to cell cycle arrest with accumulation of cells in G2/M, alteration of the microtubular network, modulation of Bcl-2 family protein expression patterns and changes of the redox status. Despite these well-described effects, no OSC derivative is yet undergoing clinical trials even though their chemistry is well understood as OSCs act as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donors. H2S is a biological mediator, synthesized through cysteine degradation and modulates vasodil

Thiol-reactive compounds from garlic inhibit the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC).

The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is a key factor in the transepithelial movement of sodium, and consequently salt and water homeostasis in various organs. Dysregulated activity of ENaC is associated with human diseases such as hypertension, the salt-wasting syndrome pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary oedema or intestinal disorders. Therefore it is important to identify novel compounds that affect ENaC activity. This study investigated if garlic (Allium sativum) and its characteristic organosulfur compounds have impact on ENaCs. Human ENaCs were heterologously expres

The chemopreventive effects of aged garlic extract against cadmium-induced toxicity.

Garlic has been reported in many previous studies as a potent chemopreventive agent. The protective effect of garlic has been ascribed to the presence of organosulphur compounds (OSC). In this study, the efficacy of aged garlic extract (AGE) compared to diallyl disulfide (DADS) in protecting against toxicity induced by cadmium (Cd) in 1321N1 and HEK293 cells was investigated. The involvement of the transcription factor Nrf2 in this protection was also examined. The results show that AGE significantly prevented loss of cell viability in Cd-treated 1321N1 and HEK293 cells. In comparison DADS had

Garlic (Allium sativum L.): adverse effects and drug interactions in humans.

Garlic (Alllium sativum L., Fam Liliaceae) is used medicinally mainly for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and prevention of arteriosclerosis. Clinical trials have consistently shown that "garlic breath" and body odor are the most common (and well-documented) complaints associated to garlic intake. Case reports have highlighted the possibility that garlic use may cause allergic reactions (allergic contact dermatitis, generalized urticaria, angiedema, pemphigus, anaphylaxis and photoallergy), alteration of platelet function and coagulation (with a possible risk of bleeding), and burns (whe

Tropical green leafy vegetables prevent garlic-induced hepatotoxicity in the rat.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is popularly consumed because of its role in the treatment and management of several diseases. However, unregulated and chronic intake of garlic can cause damage to cells through the production of free radicals. This study was carried out in order to assess the ability of some tropical green leafy vegetables (Telfairia occidentalis, Solanum macrocapon, Corchorus olitorius, Baselia alba, Cnidoscolus acontifolus, Amarantus cruentus, and Ocimum gratissimum) to prevent garlic-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Wistar strain albino rats were fed diet containing 4% garlic along

Early physiological and biochemical modulation in garlic under drought and high temperature.

Drought and high temperature are major abiotic stresses that increasingly threaten crop productivity under climate change. Although responses to individual stresses are widely documented, the combined effects of drought and heat often induce distinct physiological and metabolic adjustments that remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated short-term responses of garlic plants (cv. Istarski crveni) grown under water-available and ambient temperature (W+/T-), water-available and high temperature (W+/T+), drought-induced and ambient temperature (W-/T-), and drought-induced and high t

Architecture and hyperparameter optimization of YOLOv5 and YOLOv8 for weed detection in garlic fields.

Weed adaptability to environmental conditions poses a major challenge in agricultural production, often leading to yield reduction or even complete crop loss. Effective weed detection requires algorithms tailored to the unique visual and biological characteristics of each crop. However, despite the agricultural importance of garlic, no studies have developed optimized state-of-the-art deep learning models for weed identification in garlic fields. Addressing this gap, the present study focuses on optimizing two prominent object detection frameworks-YOLOv5 and YOLOv8-for accurate weed detection

Effects of aged garlic and ginkgo biloba extracts on the pharmacokinetics of sofosbuvir in rats.

Sofosbuvir is a direct acting antiviral (DAA) approved for the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV). Sofosbuvir is a substrate of P-glycoprotein (P-gp). For this reason, inhibitors, or inducers of intestinal P-gp may alter the plasma concentration of sofosbuvir and increase or decrease its efficacy causing a significant change in its pharmacokinetic parameters. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetic interaction between either aged garlic or ginkgo biloba extracts with sofosbuvir through targeting P-gp as well as possible toxicities in rats. Rats were divided into four gro

Antischistosomal and anti-inflammatory activity of garlic and allicin compared with that of praziquantel in vivo.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is an acute and chronic zoonotic parasitic disease caused by trematode worms. The host inflammatory response to schistosome eggs leads to perioval granulomata formation, mainly in the liver and intestine. This study investigated the potential antischistosomal and anti-inflammatory activity of both garlic extract and allicin on liver fibrotic markers in BALB/c mice with schistosomiasis (S. mansoni infection) compared with that of the commonly used drug, praziquantel (PZQ). METHODS: In this study, 140 female BALB/c mice (7-weeks old) were divided into seven groups wi

Immunomodulatory Effects of the Nutraceutical Garlic Derivative Allicin in the Progression of Diabetic Nephropathy.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is presently the primary cause of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It has been suggested that inflammation and oxidative stress, in addition to or in concert with the metabolic changes, plays an important role in the maintenance and progression of the disease. Therefore, attenuating or blocking these mechanisms may be a therapeutic target to delay the progression of the disease. Diallyl thiosulfinate (allicin), a compound derived from garlic, inhibits free radical formation, increases glutathione synthesis and decreases the levels of proinfla

Boiling enriches the linear polysulfides and the hydrogen sulfide-releasing activity of garlic.

Garlic is rich in polysulfides, and some of them can be H2S donors. This study was conducted to explore the effect of cooking on garlic's organopolysulfides and H2S-releasing activity. Garlic bulbs were crushed and boiled for a period ranging from 3 to 30min and the solvent extracts were analyzed by GC-MS/FID and HPLC. A cell-based assay was used to measure the H2S-releasing activity of the extracts. Results showed that the amounts of allyl polysulfides increased in crushed garlic boiled for 6-10min; however, prolonging the thermal treatment to 20 or 30min decreased their concentrations. Data
