The purpose of this study was to conduct a literature review to examine micronutrient deficiencies in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. We conducted a literature review using PubMed and Cochrane databases to examine micronutrient deficiencies in SG patients in order to identify trends and find consistency in recommendations. Seventeen articles were identified that met the defined criteria. Iron, vitamin B12 and vitamin D were the primary micronutrients evaluated. Results demonstrate the need for consistent iron and B12 supplementation, in addition to a multivitamin, while vitamin D supplementat

Portomesenteric thrombosis is an important but rarely reported complication following bariatric surgery. It has been suggested that the incidence of portal vein thrombosis is directly related to many risk factors inherent in the bariatric population as well as factors related to local and systemic effects of laparoscopic surgery. Possible aetiologies vary from systemic inherited hypercoagulable states to a direct inflammatory reaction of portosystemic vessels. Here we present a case report of a 47-year-old obese women who underwent a robotic sleeve gastrectomy with subsequent development of a

We describe a case of polysubstance use disorder that occurred after sleeve gastrectomy. Alcohol, cannabis, and stimulant use disorder was diagnosed a few years after the bariatric surgery when the patient developed a substance-induced psychotic disorder. Treatments included psychotropic medications to treat his psychosis and involvement in a drug rehabilitation and relapse prevention program. This case highlights the importance of a preoperative assessment of substance use risk in patients undergoing bariatric surgeries as well as the need for close follow-up postoperatively.

Background: Laparoscopic total gastrectomy with extended lymphadenectomy is a technically demanding surgical procedure with steep learning curve that has limited its widespread use. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of the robotic approach in total gastrectomy for cancer. We present our experience of 17 consecutive patients who underwent robotic total gastrectomy with intracorporal sutured Roux-en-Y esophagojejunostomy and jejuno jejunostomy between 2014 and 2017. Methods: Data were collected, and patients' demographics and outcomes were examined retrospectively. Results: S

The prevalence of obesity is rising, becoming a medical problem worldwide. Also GERD incidence is higher in obese patients compared with normal weight, with an increased risk of 2.5 of developing symptoms and erosive esophagitis. Different treatment modalities have been proposed to treat obese patients, but bariatric surgery due to its complex interactions via anatomic, physiologic and neurohormonal changes achieved the best long-term results, with sustained weight loss and decrease of complications and mortality caused by obesity. The bariatric surgical procedures can be restrictive: laparosc

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of hair loss after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). The effects of variables on the likelihood that patients developed hair loss were also examined.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty patients who underwent LSG were enrolled in this prospective study. Demographics, hematocrit, iron, zinc, folic acid, vitamin B12, total proteins, and albumin were evaluated preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively.
RESULTS: Hair loss was observed in 56% of patients and particularly in 46% in females and in 10% in males. Analysis of variance indicated

Pylorus-preserving gastrectomy (PPG) is a function-preserving surgery for the treatment of early gastric cancer (EGC), aiming to decrease the complication rate and improve postoperative quality of life. According to the Japanese gastric cancer treatment guidelines, PPG can be performed for cT1N0M0 gastric cancer located in the middle-third of the stomach, at least 4.0 cm away from the pylorus. Although the length of the antral cuff gradually increased, from 1.5 cm during the initial use of the procedure to 3.0 cm currently, its optimal length still remains unclear. Standard procedures for the

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is considered to be the most effective treatment of morbid obesity and improvement of obesity-related comorbidities, such as type II diabetes. However, both peripheral and central neurological complications can occur after bariatric surgery. Such complications tend to occur more frequently after bypass surgery than after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). The objective of this study was to identify the patients that presented post-operative neurological complications after undergoing SG and describe the incidence, presentation, and management of these complications.

BACKGROUND: Sleeve gastrectomy has become an established primary bariatric surgical technique. Its relatively lower complexity has made it eligible to be performed by single-incision laparoscopy (single-incision laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, SILSG). The aim of this paper is to present our SILSG technique and surgical outcomes and demonstrate that SILSG is a safe and feasible procedure using conventional laparoscopic instruments.
METHODS: All patients who underwent SILSG since December 2012 in our institution were analyzed. The operative technique involved creation of a transumbilical incis

Acquired fistulas between the tracheobronchial tree and the gastrointestinal tract are rare but serious complications of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies with significant morbidity and mortality. With the rising popularity and widespread acceptance of bariatric surgery techniques, the occurrence of gastrobronchial fistulas is being increasingly recognised. We present the case of a 26-year-old woman who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for morbid obesity and presented later with a history of chronic productive cough. Upper gastrointestinal series showed the presence of a communicating

We report a very rare case of surgery on gastric conduit cancer. A 67-year-old male patient underwent esophagectomy and intrathoracic esophagogastrostomy for squamous cell carcinoma of the lower thoracic esophagus 27 months ago. Upon follow-up, a gastric carcinoma at the intra-abdominal part of the gastric conduit was found on an esophagogastroduodenoscopy. We performed total gastrectomy and esophagocolonojejunostomy in the manner of Roux-en-Y anastomosis. The postoperative course was not eventful and an esophagogram on the 10th postoperative day showed no leakage or stenosis of the passage. T

Most patients with Ménétrier's disease are treated nonoperatively with nutritional support, antacids, and pain medications. Surgical intervention is rarely required. We report the case of a 41-year-old male with HIV and hepatitis B who presented with weight loss, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen showed diffuse gastric thickening without lymphadenopathy and an upper endoscopy revealed chronic gastritis and enlarged gastric folds without evidence of Helicobacter pylori. Multiple endoscopic biopsies showed chronic inflammation without malignancy. A l

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recent advances in diagnostic techniques have led to the detection of an increasing number of early gastric cancers in the upper third of the stomach. The objective of this study was to determine the most appropriate surgical treatment for these cancers.
METHODOLOGY: The clinicopathologic characteristics of 35 patients with early gastric cancer in the upper third of the stomach who underwent three different types of gastrectomies were reviewed retrospectively from hospital records between January 1992 and August 1999.
RESULTS: Patients undergoing limited proximal gastrectomy

We developed a new technique of reconstruction in Billroth 1 gastrectomy, jejunal pouch interposition (JPI). The interposed jejunal segment consists of a proximally double-plicated pouch and a distally isoperistaltic conduit. From 1987 to 1994, the JPI was performed on 102 patients with gastric carcinoma. The postoperative functional assay was carried out at least one year later after surgery. Sixty-five patients with the conventional Billroth 1 reconstruction (B-1) during the same period were employed as the control. Gastric emptying time estimated with scinti-scanning was significantly delay

Wernicke's encephalopathy, neuropathy caused by a deficiency of thiamine is a syndrome characterized by memory troubles, mental confusion, ophthalmoplegia and nystagmus. The authors present a case that came up in a patient who underwent a subtotal gastrectomy because of malignant neoplasm of the stomach. More or less three months after the intervention the patient's general conditions were considerably declined and characterised by alimentary vomit, sensory obnubilation and neuromuscular deficit. After appropriate diagnostic ascertainments a repetition of the neoplastic disease was to be exclu

Gastrectomy preserving pylorus and pyloric vagus was done in 32 cases to preventing complications caused by conventional gastric resection. This operation, similar to Billroth I (B-I) and Billroth II (B-II) in reducing acidity, was effective in preventing reflux and dumping syndrome. But the results of this operation were better than those of B-I and B-II according to postoperative gastric emptying test, fat and protein digestion, gastric biopsy, body weight, and patients' general conditions.

The increased incidence of gallbladder diseases after gastrectomy is discussed with regard to contractile motility of the gallbladder. Ultrasonographic findings and contraction of the gallbladder in response to egg yolk or caerulein were studied before and after gastrectomy at intervals ranging from 2 weeks to 6 months. Enlargement of the gallbladder with accumulation of biliary sludge and hypomotility were frequently observed within a month of operation for gastric cancer, suggesting that biliary stasis is an important contributing factor in postoperative acute cholecystitis. Within 3 months
