Cytomegalovirus gastritis: Clinicopathological profile.

BACKGROUND: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) gastritis is occasionally reported in case reports and limited case series. Up to now, it is the largest and most comprehensive retrospective study of CMV gastritis. METHODS: All patients who were histologically diagnosed with CMV gastritis at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital between January 2000 and April 2020 were included. Patients were divided into two groups according to immunity. Between-group differences in characteristics, manifestations, endoscopic features, prognostic factors, and outcomes were analyzed. The main endpoint was 3-month mortality.

Streptococcus anginosus: A new pathogen of superficial gastritis, atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer.

A wealth of research indicates that superficial gastritis (SG) and atrophic gastritis (AG) are precursors to gastric cancer (GC). While Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has long been recognized as a key player in GC development, recent findings by Fu et al. have identified Streptococcus anginosus (S. anginosus) as an emerging pathogen that can trigger SG, AG and GC. S. anginosus, a gram-positive coccus, leverages its surface protein T. pallidum membrane protein C (TMPC) to engage with the annexin A2 (ANXA2) receptor of gastric epithelial cells, facilitating its colonization and invasion in the

OsmoPrep-associated Gastritis: A Histopathologic Mimic of Iron Pill Gastritis and Mucosal Calcinosis.

We have identified 8 cases of gastritis characterized by the presence of purple to black granular deposits in the superficial mucosa associated with marked reactive epithelial changes. In each case, the patient had taken OsmoPrep, a tablet form of sodium phosphate used for bowel preparation just before upper endoscopy and had undergone concurrent colonoscopy. Endoscopic findings ranged from normal gastric mucosa to severe inflammation, congestion, and friability. No other gastrointestinal sites were noted to contain the deposits or show similar mucosal injury. On initial histologic review, the

Helicobacter felis gastritis in gnotobiotic rats: an animal model of Helicobacter pylori gastritis.

The gastric spirillum Helicobacter felis, originally isolated from the cat stomach, colonizes the stomachs of germfree rats. Studies were designed to examine the pathological and serological responses of germfree rats inoculated orally with H. felis. At 2 weeks postinoculation, the gastric mucosa of germfree rats had lymphocytes and eosinophils scattered in small foci throughout the subglandular region of the antrum. Small numbers of lymphocytes were present in the subglandular portion of the antral mucosa that focally extended through the lamina propria towards the luminal surface. Eight week

Helicobacter heilmannii-associated gastritis: clinicopathologic findings and comparison with Helicobacter pylori-associated gastritis.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the clinicopathologic features of Helicobacter heilmannii-associated gastritis and to compare H. heilmannii-associated gastritis with H. pylori-associated gastritis. We reviewed 5,985 consecutive gastric biopsy specimens. All cases of chronic gastritis with Helicobacter infection were evaluated with the Updated Sydney System, and the grades of all gastritis variables were compared between H. heilmannii-associated gastritis and H. pylori-associated gastritis groups. There were 10 cases of H. heilmannii-associated gastritis (0.17%) and 3,285 cases of H. py

Epstein-Barr virus gastritis: an underrecognized form of severe gastritis simulating gastric lymphoma.

We describe an exceedingly rare case of severe gastritis that was temporally associated with primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. The patient was a 59-year-old immunocompetent man who presented with intermittent fever of unknown origin and epigastric pain for 18 days. A computed tomographic scan of the abdomen showed diffuse thickening of the gastric wall and esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed numerous ulcers in the stomach. Histologic examination of gastric biopsies showed a dense and diffuse atypical lymphoid infiltrate in the lamina propria with erosions and focal lymphoepithelial l

Antral mucosa healing at long-term follow-up in patients with corpus atrophic gastritis and concomitant antral gastritis may mimic autoimmune gastritis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Corpus atrophic gastritis (CAG) is defined as autoimmune when the antrum is spared, representing this element a crucial diagnostic criterium of autoimmune gastritis. In contrast, CAG with concomitant antral gastritis (AG), atrophic or non-atrophic, is generally attributed to H. pylori infection. During the natural history of CAG, possible antrum healing has been supposed. The current study aimed to assess the antral mucosa histopathological changes at long-term follow-up (FU) with respect to baseline in patients with CAG and concomitant atrophic or non-atrophic gastritis AG

A clinicopathologic study of 42 patients with granulomatous gastritis. Is there really an "idiopathic" granulomatous gastritis?

Idiopathic granulomatous gastritis (IGG) is a diagnosis made only by excluding other causes of granulomatous gastritis, such as infection, foreign bodies, and systemic granulomatous diseases. Recently, several investigators have questioned the existence of IGG. We reviewed the slides and clinical data of all cases of granulomatous gastritis seen at the Cleveland Clinic between 1975 and 1994. In addition to routine hematoxylin and eosin stains, slides from all cases were stained with Ziehl-Neelsen, Gomori's methenamine silver, and Giemsa stains. Clinical information and follow-up were available

Peptic ulcer and chronic gastritis: their relation to age and sex, and to location of ulcer and gastritis.

The progression, age-behaviour and profiles of chronic gastritis were studied in 460 patients with active gastric or duodenal ulcer, and in 226 patients with ulcer scar. The results were compared with those obtained from a sample of subjects representing the general population. In patients with ulcer or ulcer scar, the progression of chronic gastritis was more rapid in antrum than in body mucosa, and was more rapid in patients with proximal ulcer in those with distal ulcer or in controls. In the body the progression of gastritis was significantly slower in patients with duodenal or juxtapylori

Campylobacter pyloridis gastritis I: Detection of urease as a marker of bacterial colonization and gastritis.

A method to detect the presence of Campylobacter pyloridis in dyspeptic patients is described. The test procedure involves placing a gastric pinch biopsy into a small amount of a solution containing urea and a pH indicator in the well of a microtiter tray. The method depends on the ability of C. pyloridis to hydrolyse urea and release an alkaline product (ammonia). The "microtiter biopsy urease test" is 100% specific for C. pyloridis and has a 91% sensitivity after 18 h reaction time. Seventy-five percent of positive biopsies had a reaction time of less than 1 h. The test may be used to predic

Collagenous Gastritis in Adults: A Case Series Elucidating the Potential Overlap with Eosinophilic Gastritis.

BACKGROUND: Collagenous gastritis (CoG) is a rare disorder defined by subepithelial collagen deposition in the gastric mucosa, with associated lymphocytic or eosinophilic infiltrates in some reported cases. PURPOSE: Our case series seeks to describe the clinical course of CoG in adults after treatment and associated endoscopic and histopathologic changes over time, specifically overlap with eosinophilic gastritis (EoG). METHODS: This case series includes eight patients diagnosed with CoG as adults at a single, large, academic tertiary care center between 2020 and 2024. Patient data were obta

Distinct Features of Autoimmune Gastritis in Patients with Open-Type Chronic Gastritis in Japan.

In Asia, the incidences of Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric cancer are high, but their association with autoimmune gastritis (AIG) is unclear. This was a retrospective cohort study of patients endoscopically diagnosed with chronic gastritis between 2005 and 2017. AIG was diagnosed according to anti-parietal cell antibody positivity. Laboratory, histological findings, and gastric cancer incidence were compared between AIG and non-AIG patients. The AIG group had more females and a higher rate of thyroid disease. Serum levels of gastrin were significantly higher in AIG patients (mean 141

Endoscopic classification of chronic gastritis based on a pilot study by the research society for gastritis.

BACKGROUND: Various types of classification of gastritis have been proposed, but no plausible classification has been available until now. The Research Society for Gastritis performed a pilot study to establish an endoscopic classification, taking into consideration the following: (i) ease of use; (ii) permitting everyone the common image; and (iii) presence of histopathological evidence. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-five patients were enrolled and underwent gastroscopy. Eight basic endoscopic and histological types of gastritis (superficial, hemorrhagic, erosive, verrucous, atrophic, metap
