A shared group of bacterial taxa in the duodenal microbiota of undernourished Pakistani children with environmental enteric dysfunction.

Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is a subclinical syndrome of altered small intestinal function postulated to be an important contributor to childhood undernutrition. The role of small intestinal bacterial communities in the pathophysiology of EED is poorly defined due to a paucity of studies where there has been a direct collection of small intestinal samples from undernourished children. Sixty-three members of a Pakistani cohort identified as being acutely malnourished between 3 and 6 months of age and whose wasting (weight-for-length Z-score [WLZ]) failed to improve after a 2-month n

The role of oral microbiome in pemphigus vulgaris.

While the impact of oral microbiome dysbiosis on autoimmune diseases has been partially investigated, its role on bullous diseases like Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV) is a totally unexplored field. This study aims to present the composition and relative abundance of microbial communities in both healthy individuals and patients with oral PV lesions. Ion Torrent was used to apply deep sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene to oral smear samples of 15 healthy subjects and 15 patients. The results showed that the most dominant phyla were Firmicutes (55.88% controls-c vs 61.27% patients-p, p value = 0

Meta-Analysis of DNA methylation and gut microbiome data in preterm birth reveals epigenetic and microbial biomarkers for early diagnosis and probiotic-based intervention.

Background: Globally, preterm birth continues to be a major contributor to neonatal morbidity and mortality. Developing early diagnostics and focused interventions requires an understanding of the molecular and microbiome factors causing preterm birth and also the identification of biomarkers. Methods: We integrated gut microbiome and DNA methylation data to identify biomarkers of preterm birth. Analysis of GSE120458 revealed 1,609 differentially methylated regions involved in immune, hormonal, and neurodevelopmental pathways. Microbiome profiling identified five altered genera: Faecalibacteri

Conjunctival flora of healthy and diseased eyes of grey seals (Halichoerus grypus): implications for treatment.

Ocular pathology is relatively common in stranded seals admitted to wildlife rehabilitation hospitals. Some have pre-existing problems, while others develop eye problems in captivity, and in particular ulcerative keratitis, due to factors such as large prominent eyes, suboptimal water quality, trauma and infighting. Despite treatment, corneal ulcerations can rapidly progress to 'melting' ulcers with subsequent rupture of the globe. In this case series, 32 grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) had conjunctival swabs taken on admission to a UK wildlife hospital to identify ocular bacterial flora and n

Analysis of Risk Factors with Assessment of the Impact of the Microbiome on the Risk of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Larynx.

Introduction: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) ranks sixth among cancers in the world, and the 5-year survival rate ranges from 25% to 60%. The risk factors for HNSCC are primarily smoking, alcohol consumption and human papillomavirus (HPV). Data indicate that 15-20% of cancers are caused by infectious agents, 20-30% by smoking and 30-35% by unhealthy lifestyles, diet, lack of physical activity and obesity. Dysbiosis is a microbiome imbalance, which promotes oncogenesis by intensifying inflammatory processes and affecting the host's metabolism. Profiling the microbiome in various

Microbial Community Analysis of Saliva and Biopsies in Patients With Oral Lichen Planus.

The specific etiology and pathogenesis of oral lichen planus (OLP) remain elusive, and microbial dysbiosis may play an important role in OLP. We evaluated the saliva and tissue bacterial community of patients with OLP and identified the colonization of bacteria in OLP tissues. The saliva (n = 60) and tissue (n = 24) samples from OLP patients and the healthy controls were characterized by 16S rDNA gene sequencing and the bacterial signals in OLP tissues were detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) targeting the bacterial 16S rDNA gene. Results indicate that the OLP tissue microbio

Differences in salivary microbiome among children with tonsillar hypertrophy and/or adenoid hypertrophy.

Children diagnosed with severe tonsillar hypertrophy display discernible craniofacial features distinct from those with adenoid hypertrophy, prompting illuminating considerations regarding microbiota regulation in this non-inflammatory condition. The present study aimed to characterize the salivary microbial profile in children with tonsillar hypertrophy and explore the potential functionality therein. A total of 112 children, with a mean age of 7.79 ± 2.41 years, were enrolled and divided into the tonsillar hypertrophy (TH) group (n = 46, 8.4 ± 2.5 years old), adenoid hypertrophy (AH) group (

Oral bacteriome and oral potentially malignant disorders: A systematic review of the associations.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal bacteria can infiltrate the epithelium, activate signaling pathways, induce inflammation, and block natural killer and cytotoxic cells, all of which contribute to the vicious circle of carcinogenesis. It is unknown whether oral dysbiosis has an impact on the etiology or prognosis of OPMD. AIMS: Within this paradigm, this work systemically investigated and reported on the composition of oral microbiota in patients with oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) versus healthy controls. METHODS: Observational studies that reported next generation sequencing analysis

Acute management of a ruptured mycotic iliac artery pseudoaneurysm in a young transplant patient.

ObjectivesRuptured mycotic pseudoaneurysms are rare, yet devastating complications that can prove challenging to manage. In immunocompromised populations, highly virulent organisms such as Gemella morbillorum can be especially difficult to combat. Here, we outline our approach to temporizing maneuvers in an emergent setting and definitive revascularization in a 27-year-old with a ruptured mycotic iliac artery pseudoaneurysm from necrosis of her kidney and pancreas allografts.MethodsThe initial staged repair involved covered stenting of the right iliac artery for hemorrhagic control of a ruptur

Acute appendicitis in children is associated with an abundance of bacteria from the phylum Fusobacteria.

BACKGROUND: Although luminal obstruction has traditionally been viewed as the underlying cause of appendicitis, recent evidence has suggested that the disease may result directly from invasion by specific pathogens, e.g. Fusobacterium nucleatum. The purpose of this study was to survey microbial communities within pediatric appendectomy specimens using a culture-independent approach. METHODS: We performed 16S ribosomal gene sequence analysis to profile the microbiota present within luminal fluid obtained from 22 pediatric appendectomy specimens. These included 10 simple appendicitis cases, 5 p

Metagenomic Analysis of the Buccal Microbiome by Nanopore Sequencing Reveals Structural Differences in the Microbiome of a Patient with Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) Compared to a Healthy Child-Case Study.

Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a qualitative developmental defect that affects the enamel tissue of permanent molars and can also occur in permanent incisors. Enamel affected by MIH has reduced hardness, increased porosity, and a higher organic content than unaffected enamel. These characteristics predispose the enamel to accumulation of bacteria and a higher prevalence of caries lesions. Through a groundbreaking metagenomic analysis of the buccal mucosal sample from a patient with MIH, we explored the intricacies of its microbiome compared to a healthy control using state-of-the-ar

Acute Appendicitis and the Microbiome: A Review of Microbial Signatures.

INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis remains one of the most common surgical emergencies, yet its pathogenesis is incompletely understood. Although mechanical luminal obstruction has traditionally been considered the initiating factor, emerging evidence suggests that the appendix hosts a unique microbial community that may influence disease onset and severity. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review that summarizes current data on the role of microbiota in appendicitis, while focusing on differences between complicated and uncomplicated presentations. RESULTS: High-throughput sequencing studies

A genome-wide association study reveals the relationship between human genetic variation and the nasal microbiome.

The nasal cavity harbors diverse microbiota that contributes to human health and respiratory diseases. However, whether and to what extent the host genome shapes the nasal microbiome remains largely unknown. Here, by dissecting the human genome and nasal metagenome data from 1401 healthy individuals, we demonstrated that the top three host genetic principal components strongly correlated with the nasal microbiota diversity and composition. The genetic association analyses identified 63 genome-wide significant loci affecting the nasal microbial taxa and functions, of which 2 loci reached study-

Temporal variation in oral microbiome composition of patients undergoing autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation with keratinocyte growth factor.

IntroductionAutologous hematopoietic cell transplantation (AHCT) is a well-established treatment for lymphoma. Unintended effects of this therapy include oral mucositis (OM) and gastrointestinal toxicities, resulting in poor clinical outcomes. The gut microbiome has been previously linked to transplant toxicities among allogeneic recipients, but little is known about the effects of AHCT on the oral microbiome.MethodsSeven patients with non-Hodgkin or Hodgkin lymphoma undergoing AHCT with palifermin (keratinocyte growth factor) were included. Buccal swab samples were collected at baseline and 1
