Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect the poorest of the poor. NTD programmes can and should rise to the challenge of playing a part in promoting more gender equitable societies. Gender equity shapes poverty and the experience of disease in multiple ways; yet to date, there has been little attention paid to gender equity in NTD control efforts. Drawing on a synthesis of relevant literature, the tacit knowledge and experience of the authors, and discussions at a meeting on women, girls and NTDs, this analysis paper distills five key lessons from over 20 years of gender mainstreaming in heal

BACKGROUND: Despite global and national commitments to gender equity, including Sustainable Development Goal 5, health policy processes often fail to adequately integrate gender considerations. This study explores how gender is prioritized in the development and implementation of four Kenyan Health Policy Implementation Strategies (HPIS), offering insight into the role of institutional actors, policy framing, and contextual factors.
METHODS: A qualitative case study was conducted involving content analysis of four HPIS documents - KASF II 2020, NSP-NCD 2021, NSP-TB 2019, and COVID-TTS 2019 -

Inspired by the sociology of Zelizer, this article lays out a framework of analysis that sheds light on money management as a cornerstone of the social organization of care. First, it lays out the features of the money management of care and caretaking practices to reveal a cyclical process in which the money side of care is rendered invisible and naturalized. It then turns to the question of debt, a key aspect of money management, and its reinforcement of gender inequalities during the care crisis associated with COVID-19. The findings are drawn from a qualitative survey of low-income househo

Purpose: To investigate the effects of gender discrimination in Japan's medical school admission process and to assess whether the situation has improved since the disclosure of such discrimination in 2018. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. The proportions of male and female applicants vis-à-vis all successful candidates admitted from 2016 to 2021 were analyzed; four medical schools were found to be systematically guilty of discriminatory admission practices. Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) have been disproportionately affected during the 2022 U.S. monkeypox outbreak, with Black or African American (Black) MSM being the most affected demographic group (1). As of September 28, 2022, Georgia had reported 1,784 monkeypox cases; 98% of which occurred in males and 77% among Black persons (2). As of September 13, 2022, 60% of reported cases were among persons with HIV infection, and 50% of persons with monkeypox had a sexually transmitted infection within the past year (3). Because of racial disparities in the incidence of monkey

We examined the prevalence of sexual abuse against women around the world and the protective factors that may prevent this violence. Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from 470,000 women in 50 countries informed our multivariate estimates. Our results show that one out of ten women aged 18-49 years old, experienced -at least once in their life time- sexual abuse, and most perpetrators are people in the environment of their victims. We also find that women educational attainment is a key factor in order to prevent sexual abuse, but gender equality achievements in economics, politics and h

PURPOSE: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in South Africa experience a disproportionately high burden of HIV acquisition. National HIV prevalence among AGYW increases nearly three-fold during the transition from late teenage years to their early twenties. We investigated whether beliefs about gender equity influence subsequent HIV acquisition among AGYW in South Africa.
METHODS: We used data from the HIV Prevention Trials Network 068, a longitudinal conditional cash transfer study of AGYW in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Gender-equitable beliefs were measured at the level of the i

Gender equity theories of fertility broadly predict that the lowest fertility in high-income settings will be seen in women facing a 'dual burden' of both paid and unpaid labour responsibilities, but that fertility will increase when male partners share domestic labour. Here we provide a critique of some gender equity theories of fertility in demography, and restate the hypothesis in terms of complementarity between partners. Further, we suggest authors use an interdisciplinary approach, such as integrating perspectives from evolutionary theory and the 'Traits-Desires-Intentions-Behaviour' fra

Systemic sources of the gender health innovation gap include inattention to the effects of sex and gender on health, underinvestment in health conditions relevant to or limited to women, workforce diversity inequities, and societal attitudes. The US federal government instituted policies and programs to address these challenges and demonstrate commitment to closing this gap with the development of the first National Strategy on Gender Equity and Equality.

BACKGROUND: Integrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) policies within health care is critical to ensuring equitable treatment and improved health outcomes for LGBTQ individuals. However, significant disparities remain in the implementation of these policies, with substantial challenges persisting in culturally and legally diverse settings such as Indonesia and Taiwan. This study explores these issues from the perspectives of long-term care staff in these two countries, focusing on their attitudes towards LGBTQ individuals and the effectiveness of existing policies.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) provide standardised direction for the diagnosis, management and treatment of medical conditions. However, sex and gender, critical determinants of health, are often inconsistently incorporated within guideline development. This study explored expert opinions on how sex and gender are currently considered in CPGs, the barriers to meaningful integration and practical strategies to strengthen equity-focused guideline development.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 participants representing clinical practice, sex and gende

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), a leading cause of maternal mortality globally, disproportionately affects women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), highlighting the deep-rooted gender related inequities in healthcare access, quality, and outcomes. Despite being largely preventable and treatable, PPH continues to claim the lives of thousands of women annually, because of systemic failures, including inadequate maternal health infrastructure, under-resourced healthcare systems, and sociocultural norms that devalue women's health. Gender inequity is manifested in delayed care-seeking, a la

INTRODUCTION: Despite the increasing representation of women in scientific fields, disparities in research funding allocation remain. This inequity deprives talented women researchers of necessary resources, limiting the diversity of perspectives and ideas, and contributes to the "scissor-shaped curve" seen in neuroscience, where women leave before obtaining senior positions. Data transparency and comprehensive reporting of information on grant winners and applicants, as well as reporting of gender and other intersecting demographics and key metrics, are crucial to effectively evaluate funding

Introduction: Experiencing adolescent relationship abuse (ARA) negatively impacts sexual health and influences risk behaviors of adolescent girls. ARA may be associated with more inequitable gender attitudes among girls, a potentially modifiable factor in violence prevention. This study examines the association among gender equitable attitudes, experiences of ARA, and sexual behaviors among girls participating in Sisterhood 2.0, a community-based violence prevention program implemented in low resource neighborhoods. Methods: Data were from baseline surveys collected for Sisterhood 2.0 implemen

Disaggregation of research data promotes transparency and is critical to identifying gaps in current knowledge and directing future research. Disaggregation of sex in orthopaedic research is essential but rare. As an example, anterior shoulder instability is affected by sex-based differences in anatomy that impact structural and clinical outcomes, yet fewer than 5% of studies disaggregate by sex. Adherence to the Sex and Gender Equity in Research guidelines is needed to improve research and promote equity.

IMPORTANCE: Despite women composing half of current medical school classes, surgical specialties still struggle to attract and retain women. Even after successful recruitment into training, women surgeons continue to face gender bias and various obstacles to career advancement, including lower rates of surgical residency completion, board certification, and professional advancement. Gender inequality in medicine has drawn attention; particular consideration regarding the status of women in surgery is warranted. We review research delineating disparities and investigating the causes underlying

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Data shows that social drivers of health (SDOH), including economic stability, racial/cultural identity, and community, have a significant impact on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other gender and sexual minority) patients face a variety of unique health risk factors and bear a disproportionate burden of CVD compared to cis-gender, heterosexual peers. There is a paucity of research assessing the etiologies of CVD health disparities

BACKGROUND: By adulthood, gender inequalities in health and wellbeing are apparent. Yet, the timing and nature of gender inequalities during childhood and adolescence are less clear. We describe the emergence of gender inequalities in health and wellbeing across the first two decades of life.
METHODS: We focused on the 40 low-income and middle-income countries in Asia and the Pacific. A measurement framework was developed around four key domains of wellbeing across the first two decades: health, education and transition to employment, protection, and a safe environment. Specific measurement c

Research continues to inadequately integrate gender and diversity, reflecting the longstanding model in which the male body has been considered the universal standard. To address these gaps, initiatives like the SAGER (Sex And Gender Equity in Research) and SAGER-swissethics guidelines have emerged, to encourage the integration of sex and gender into research, from the design to the dissemination of results. Clinical guidelines rarely include sex- or gender-specific recommendations. It is unclear whether this lack reflects the absence of differences or, conversely, a lack of data to establish
