Associations of Sexual Identity and Gender Identity with Substance Use and Mental Health in Young Adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Research showing that sexual and gender minority (SGM) young adults are at increased risk of substance use and mental health symptoms have insufficiently accounted for SGM identity diversity. This study examined differences in substance use and mental health symptoms among young adults with diverse sexual (heterosexual, lesbian/gay, asexual, bisexual, pansexual, and queer) and gender (cisgender, transgender, and on-binary) identities. METHODS: Five longitudinal survey waves (2019-2023) of young adults (n = 2724; mean age = 21.7) from Southern California were used to estimate time-

[Characteristics of children and adolescents with gender dysphoria referred to the Hamburg Gender Identity Clinic].

Given the increasing demand for counselling in gender dysphoria in childhood in Germany, there is a definite need for empirical data on characteristics and developmental trajectories of this clinical group. This study aimed to provide a first overview by assessing demographic characteristics and developmental trajectories of a group of gender variant boys and girls referred to the specialised Gender Identity Clinic in Hamburg. Data were extracted from medical charts, transcribed and analysed using qualitative content analysis methods. Categories were set up by inductive-deductive reasoning bas

Testing the tripartite influence model among Chinese transgender and gender-diverse adults by gender identity.

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people face elevated risks for eating and body image disturbances relative to their cisgender counterparts. The tripartite influence model has been widely validated in general populations; however, there is limited evidence on its applicability among TGD adults. Existing studies have also often aggregated individuals with different gender identities and have been primarily conducted in Western cultural contexts. Accordingly, the suitability of the tripartite influence model in non-Western cultural contexts (e.g., China) remains unknown. To fill these gaps,

The Relationship between Gender Identity and Gender Centrality among Transgender, Cisgender, Nonbinary, and Intersex Individuals.

This study highlights the relationship between gender identity and gender centrality, including self-reported measures of the centrality of masculinity and femininity in individuals' interactional expression, physical expression, interests, and feeling masculine or feminine. This is a secondary data analysis of a larger study (The 2019 Pleasure Study). In this analysis, it was found that there is a notable relationship between gender identity and levels of gender centrality. Transgender men and transgender women reported higher levels of gender identity centrality ("How important is your gende

Descriptive Study of Gender Dysphoria in Japanese Individuals with Male-to-Female Gender Identity Disorder.

We focus on Japanese individuals with gender identity disorder (GID), especially male-to-female (MTF) GID, who have experienced difficulty in adapting to social life. We clarify what gender dysphoria is, and we examine methods of intervention. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 individuals with MTF-GID from August 2015 to April 2017. We categorized the subjects'experiences regarding dysphoria into the 'Onset of gender dysphoria,' 'Experience of feeling gender dysphoria,' and 'Changes due to receiving medical care.' The subjects reported experiencing great pain and distress becau

Testing the prenatal hormone hypothesis of tic-related disorders: gender identity and gender role behavior.

The hypothesis that prenatal masculinization of the brain increases risk of tic disorders in postnatal life was tested by measuring gender and gender role behavior in 89 children and adults with a clinical diagnosis of Tourette syndrome or obsessive compulsive disorder and 67 healthy, unaffected children and adults. Consistent with this hypothesis, a tic disorder in females was associated with more gender dysphoria, increased masculine play preferences, and a more typically "masculine" pattern of performance on two sex-typed spatial tasks. Males with tic disorders reported increased masculine

Gender identity and gender transposition: longitudinal outcome study of 24 male hermaphrodites assigned as boys.

The longitudinal case histories of 24 male-assigned male hermaphrodites aged 18 or older were indexed and abstracted for the presence or absence of variables related to gender transposition, namely, bisexualism, homosexuality, or sex reassignment to live as a female. The sample was biased in favor of cases (N = 20) not showing signs of gender transposition. In these cases, there was no gender transposition even if the following variables were in evidence; neonatal ambivalence in announcing the sex; cosmetic inadequacy of masculine genital appearance; sitting posture for urination; and feminizi

Should Clinicians Care About How Food Behaviors Express Gender Identity?

The nutrition care process (NCP) accounts for a person's biological sex characteristics but does not adequately address their gender. Yet dietary choices express one's social identity in ethically and clinically relevant ways. Persons identifying as men tend to eat meat more frequently, consume more meat, and are less likely to be vegetarian than persons identifying as women, for example. Research on transgender persons' diets suggests that food is one means of expressing gender identity; this article argues that an inclusive sex- and gender-informed approach can likely improve the NCP's usefu

A Follow-Up Study of Boys With Gender Identity Disorder.

This study reports follow-up data on the largest sample to date of boys clinic-referred for gender dysphoria (n = 139) with regard to gender identity and sexual orientation. In childhood, the boys were assessed at a mean age of 7.49 years (range, 3.33-12.99) at a mean year of 1989 and followed-up at a mean age of 20.58 years (range, 13.07-39.15) at a mean year of 2002. In childhood, 88 (63.3%) of the boys met the DSM-III, III-R, or IV criteria for gender identity disorder; the remaining 51 (36.7%) boys were subthreshold for the criteria. At follow-up, gender identity/dysphoria was assessed via

[Puberty-delaying hormone therapy in adolescents with gender identity disorder].

The guideline for the treatment of people with gender identity disorder (GID) of the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology was revised in January 2012. The guideline eased restrictions for the endocrine treatment of transsexual adolescents. A medical specialist can start treating transsexual adolescents at the age of 15 after the diagnosis of GID. It recommends that transsexual adolescents (Tanner stage 2 [mainly 12-13 years of age]) are treated by endocrinologists to suppress puberty with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists until the age of 15 years old, after which cross-se

Sexual orientation and gender identity: an administrative approach to diversity.

Research indicates that gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) teens in the care of a northeastern child welfare department do not receive adequate services due to the workers' homophobic attitudes. These teens are at high risk for alcohol and drug abuse, homelessness, prostitution, and suicide. A training module was developed for administrators. Pretest and posttest instruments measured their education and support of GLBTQ issues before and after the training.

Gender identity reversal in an adolescent with mixed gonadal dysgenesis.

We describe a patient who was assigned female at birth because of genital ambiguity without performing further diagnostic procedures and presented at the age of 13-1/2 years because of her strong desire to change her legal sex. Karyotype was 46,XY; clinical, endocrinological, radiological and surgical work-up revealed hypergonadotropic hypogonadism and mixed gonadal dysgenesis. Gender identity reversal was performed after extensive psychological testing and adaptation of living circumstances resulting in a successful integration as a male with normal psychological and social functioning. Adoptee overrepresentation among clinic-referred boys with gender identity disorder.

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that adoptees are overrepresented among a sample of clinic-referred boys with gender identity problems (N = 238). To compare the adoptees and nonadoptees on demographic, behaviour problem, and gender-typed measures. METHOD: The percentage of clinic-referred boys with gender identity problems adopted in the first 2 years of life ("early adoptees") was compared to the base rate of boys adopted in Ontario. Parent-report and behavioural measures were used to compare the early adoptees with "late adoptees" (adopted after the second year of life) and nonadoptees.

Cognitive correlates of biologic sex and gender identity in transsexualism.

Twenty-two individuals seeking sex-change surgery and diagnosed as transsexual by a Gender Identify Research Team underwent extensive neuropsychological and cognitive testing prior to surgery. On the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale transsexuals performed in congruence with their biologic sex rather than gender identity. In contrast, on a measure of conceptual styles, transsexuals performed in congruence with their gender identity. The MMPI did not provide evidence of a major psychopathological process.

Sexual orientation, gender identity and cardiometabolic risk: a narrative review.

Recent reports estimate that approximately 9% of adults globally identify as a sexual and gender minority (SGM), including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ+) people. While research has shown that SGM populations experience health disparities, few studies have focused on cardiometabolic risk and outcomes, particularly with regard to diabetes and its sequelae. Using narrative review methods, we describe the epidemiology of cardiometabolic risk factors and outcomes in SGM populations, with a focus on literature resulting from meta-analyses and analyses of large samples publishe
