BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) often occurs in resource-limited settings such as Ethiopia. It could result in psychological and physical adverse outcomes such as stress, anxiety, depression, unsafe abortion, unwanted pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with gender-based violence among female high school students in Wolaita Sodo, Ethiopia.
METHODS: An institutionally based-cross-sectional study was conducted in Wolaita Sodo, Ethiopia. A total of 604 female high school students were recruited through multi-sta

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence against women in Sub-Saharan Africa is highly prevalent, with profound mental health consequences including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety. Despite growing recognition of this public health crisis, evidence on mental health interventions remains fragmented across countries and populations, with limited synthesis of what interventions work, for whom, and under what conditions in African contexts.
OBJECTIVE: To systematically map and synthesize evidence on mental health interventions for women who have experienced violence across

School-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) affects millions of children globally and is prevalent in Sierra Leone. SRGBV involves abuse at and around school and can affect children's health, school attendance and academic performance. Due to disability stigma, children with disabilities are often more affected by violence at school and in the community but evidence on this relationship remains weak. Using community-based participatory methods, including focus group discussions, geospatial mapping and photography, this study explored the perspectives, experiences and needs of children with di

While initial reports have emphasized a global rise in the frequency of intimate partner violence following COVID-19, emerging data are now showing a concerning surge in the severity of COVID-19-induced physical intimate partner violence. One of the most dangerous, frequent, yet hidden consequences of severe physical intimate partner violence is acquired brain injury, including repetitive mild traumatic brain injury and hypoxic brain injury. Although the increase in high-risk physical abuse during COVID-19 is gaining recognition, what still remains absent is the urgent discussion on intimate p

BACKGROUND: Humanitarian emergencies increase the risk of gender-based violence (GBV). We estimated the prevalence of GBV victimisation and perpetration among women and men in urban settings across Somalia, which has faced decades of war and natural disasters that have resulted in massive population displacements.
METHODS: A population-based survey was conducted in 14 urban areas across Somalia between December 2014 and November 2015.
RESULTS: A total of 2376 women and 2257 men participated in the survey. One in five men (22.2%, 95% CI 20.5 to 23.9) and one in seven (15.5%; 95% CI 14.1 to 17

Adolescents and young people in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) experience high rates of gender-based violence (GBV). The whole school approach (WSA) is an established benchmark of effective school-based interventions to address this issue. We conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature using PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Clinicaltrials.gov, and Google Scholar (1) to determine the characteristics, measured outcomes, and effectiveness of school-based GBV interventions and (2) to examine each papers' alignment with WSA and methodological quality. Research on work with survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) has primarily focused on its emotional burden and implications for practitioners' well-being. This study explores how professionals working in GBV services experience and make sense of their work, drawing on 23 interviews analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Participants' accounts revealed challenges related to the persistence of GBV and sexism in society and to job precarity, but also highlighted the meaning they attribute to their work as a political commitment to supporting women and contributing to social change. The fin

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a global public health crisis exacerbated in fragile settings by gender inequalities, displacement, and resource scarcity. While mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) interventions aim to support people with experience of GBV, research on their effectiveness across diverse fragile contexts remains limited. In this review, we answer the following questions: (1) What type(s) of MHPSS interventions are commonly implemented with survivors of GBV in humanitarian/fragile settings? (2) What outcome(s) are targeted by MHPSS interventions implemented for those ex

INTRODUCTION: Women living with HIV (WLHIV) in conflict zones are at high risk of sexual and physical violence due to instability, stigma and proximity to military personnel. Given sustained ongoing conflict, this study evaluated the relationship between displacement and gender-based violence (GBV), including experiences of sexual violence, abuse by healthcare workers and reproductive coercion among WLHIV in Ukraine. These forms of violence are conceptualised as severe forms of enacted stigma that are downstream outcomes of social, cultural and political norms, as well as social and structural

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive problem in Zimbabwe, affecting women and girls. The types of GBV that are prevalent in Zimbabwe include sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and child marriage. The issue of evidence generation remains crucial in developing interventions that are tailor-made for GBV response. In an attempt to build pathways for the strengthening of GBV programming and to influence policy change, the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Africa Trust (SAT) Zimbabwe conducted a secondary data review of GBV cases recorded in 2018 and 2019 in collaborati

Although transgender women of color, specifically Black and Latina experience gender-based violence in a variety of contexts, one of the most consistently reported is from a dating or romantic partner. This qualitative study sought to understand the manifestations and consequences of stigma experienced by transgender women of color in their dating or romantic relationships. Between January and February 2019, we purposively recruited 33 transgender women of color to participate in five focus group discussions and complete a brief survey. We employed both inductive and deductive approaches to co

OBJECTIVES: Use a gender perspective to analyze a partner notification study conducted in antenatal clinics in Bolivia to assess the association between intimate partner violence (IPV) and partner notification.
GOAL: Guide the implementation of a safe, feasible, and culturally appropriate partner notification strategy in Bolivia in order to reduce the potential of IPV.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional survey with women (n = 209) and their notified partners (n = 137) and structured interviews with a subsample of participants.
RESULTS: Nearly 40% of women reported IPV in the past

BACKGROUND: Treatment for substance use disorders in Spain has traditionally been abstinence-focused and developed from an androcentric perspective, failing to address the specific needs of women who use drugs. Although abstinence-based models continue to predominate, cities such as Madrid and Barcelona now offer a broader range of services, including harm reduction approaches. The intersection between substance use and gender-based violence remains largely overlooked, especially in research and service provision, thereby reinforcing systemic inequalities and limiting access to appropriate res

Women and gender-diverse people with disabilities are at an elevated risk of gender-based violence (GBV). This study examines how women and gender-diverse people with disabilities experience GBV and how such experiences impact their sexual and reproductive health (SRH) across the life course. We conducted a community-engaged qualitative study from 2022 to 2023 with women and gender-diverse people with disabilities aged 18 years and older living in Canada. Using an inductive thematic approach, we analyzed 26 semi-structured interviews about experiences of GBV and SRH across the life course, inc

BACKGROUND: An emerging evidence base has explored the nutritional consequences of gender-based violence (GBV) perpetrated against girls during childhood/adolescence. We conducted a rapid evidence assessment of quantitative studies describing associations between GBV and girls' nutrition.
METHODS: We adapted systematic review methods and included empirical, peer-reviewed studies, published after 2000 (until November, 2022), that were written in Spanish or English and reported quantitative associations between girls' exposure to GBV and nutrition outcomes. A variety of GBV forms were considere

Gender-based violence (GBV) toward women is widespread and has been associated with increased HIV risk. We investigated attitudes toward GBV among men living in Rustenburg, South Africa, who were enrolled in a longitudinal HIV incidence study. Participants were 18 to 49 years old, reported high risk sexual activity in the last 3 months, and were HIV-uninfected. Attitudes toward GBV were evaluated using responses to a five-item standardized questionnaire about men perpetrating physical violence on a female spouse; responses to each item were scaled from 1 (no agreement) to 4 (strong agreement)

This study aimed to systematically review studies that examined the prevalence of gender based violence (GBV) that included intimate partner violence (IPV) and non-IPV among women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This evidence is an important aspect to work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) target of eliminating all forms of violence in SSA. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Ovid Medline, CINAHL, Cochrane Central, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science were used to source articles with stringent eligibilit
