Nearly all cases of cervical cancer are caused by persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), and many cases of invasive cancer have been attributed to lack of screening. Transmasculine and nonbinary patients are more likely to be underscreened than cisgender women for a variety of reasons, and high-risk HPV self-sampling has been proposed as a method to increase screening uptake in this population. This narrative review is among the first to assess HPV self-sampling as a cervical cancer screening modality in transmasculine and nonbinary populations. Self-sampling for HPV d

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are Canadian public health concerns and human rights violations that inequitably impact the health of children, women, and gender-diverse people. The Alliance against Violence and Adversity (AVA) developed an Online Training Platform (AVA Online) to facilitate learning about GBV, ACEs, implementation science, and equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility for students, academics, and community partners. This study evaluated the first iteration of AVA Online using mixed-method survey data from platform users.

Objective: Mental health (MH) comorbidity is elevated in individuals who identify as gender-diverse (GD) and in individuals with an eating disorder (ED). GD individuals with an ED may have significantly higher MH comorbidity than individuals with just one of these conditions. Gender Minority Stress Theory suggests that experience of stressful events associated with gender minority status may increase risk of developing MH difficulties and may explain the elevated risk of ED diagnosis in GD populations. Method: This is a cross-sectional analysis of survey data. Using data from a sample of 334,9

Inclusive language in data collection is essential for effective and sustained engagement with marginalised populations. The historic use of imprecise conceptualisations of gender and sexuality in the field of HIV and sexual health research has been challenged in the last decade, particularly cisnormative and monosexist assumptions about identity and practice. This study reports on the process of redesigning a repeated cross-sectional survey questionnaire in Australia to improve gender and sexuality inclusivity. The Gay Community Periodic Surveys (GCPS), repeated since 1996, was redesigned in

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender expansive (TGE) individuals report elevated rates of eating disorder (ED) symptoms and suicidal ideation (SI). ED symptoms may contribute to SI via impairments in interpersonal functioning, particularly thwarted belongingness (TB) and perceived burdensomeness (PB). Social exclusion (SE) may also account for this relation, though no U.S. studies have tested this. This study explored relations between ED symptoms and SI through TB, PB, and SE in a U.S. TGE sample.
METHOD: Participants (n = 301, 43% gender expansive, Mage = 29 years) recruited nationally throug

Trans and nonbinary (TNB) people are subject to social and institutional marginalization, and simultaneously report varied experiences of resilience. We developed and validated a novel measure of TNB-specific resilience and were following our participants longitudinally when our NIH grant was unjustly terminated. Resisting the government's efforts to derail science, the current study uses our baseline data to understand whether the positive effects of resilience on mental health hold across various levels of enacted stigma. Our sample included 608 participants between the ages of 18 and 77 yea

The relationship between childhood gender nonconformity (CGN) and suicidal behavior among gay and bisexual men, along with its underlying mechanisms, need more exploration, especially in the Chinese context, a collectivistic culture emphasizing conformity to strict gender norms. This study aimed to examine the relationship between CGN and suicidal behavior and the mediating role of childhood abuse (i.e., physical, psychological, and sexual abuse) and social inhibition in this relationship among gay and bisexual men. A sample of 450 Chinese participants, consisting of 211 gay men and 239 bisexu

Transgender and nonbinary (trans) individuals experience high rates of intimate partner violence (IPV), contributing to elevated vulnerability to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). While prior research has established associations between IPV and HIV risk, little is known about the mechanisms through which IPV affects engagement in HIV/STI prevention among trans populations. This study qualitatively explored how varied experiences of IPV may impact prevention behaviors, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use, condom negotiation, and HIV/

Contemporary research suggests that transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) adults encounter formidable barriers to health care, including access to quality therapeutic interventions. This systematic review is one of the first to specifically explore obstacles to TGNC mental health care. A rigorous literature review identified eight relevant studies: six qualitative designs and two quantitative designs. Thematic synthesis revealed three major barriers to care and five corresponding subthemes: (1) personal concerns, involving fear of being pathologized or stereotyped and an objection to com

Positive romantic relationships are linked to physical health via stress buffering. Although a growing number of studies have found that couple interactions before or after the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) modulate cortisol reactivity and recovery in the stress-exposed individual, gaps remain concerning dyadic, cross-partner associations and specific positive support behaviors that could explain this buffering effect. Additionally, while sex assigned at birth, sociocultural gender, and sexual orientation have been shown to modulate stress reactive cortisol, such studies have not included se

Cervical cancer screening for transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people should be offered in accordance with guidelines for cisgender women. Testosterone therapy has been associated with higher odds of inadequate cervical cytology and benign cervical changes, which may be difficult to differentiate from high-grade dysplasia. Patients with testosterone-related atrophy may benefit from pretreatment with topical estrogen. Growing data support self-collected HPV as an acceptable method for screening among TNB individuals for whom pelvic examination poses a barrier.

Transgender individuals in the United States face overwhelming systemic oppression as well as high rates of violence and victimization. However, few studies have evaluated how visibly perceived gender non-conformity works as a marker of stigma which may contribute to increased victimization. This is imperative to investigate as experiencing frequent victimization can lead to a host of negative health and life outcomes for trans and non-binary individuals. Thus, it is important to understand the intricacies of transgender victimization to further find and promote mitigating resources. In this s

PURPOSE: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals face distinct gender minority stress and body image concerns, leading to emotional and cognitive responses that can contribute to negative mental health outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a mindful self-compassion (MSC) intervention among TGD individuals in Hong Kong.
METHODS: A single-group, six-session MSC intervention was delivered weekly among 17 participants from December 2024 to January 2025, including eight transgender men, six transgender women, and three g

BACKGROUND: Gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and trans and gender diverse people (TGD) are disproportionately affected by several vaccine-preventable diseases. However, research on vaccine uptake for both sexually transmitted and non-sexually transmitted infections among GBMSM and TGD remains limited. Understanding differences in uptake between selective (e.g. hepatitis A; meningococcal; human papillomavirus; HPV; mpox) and universal (e.g. influenza, COVID-19) is important for informing future immunisation policy and strategies.
METHODS: We surveyed past vaccine uptake among

This study examines mental health disparities among transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive (hereinafter "trans") patients within a large urban health care system in the Bronx, New York-a relatively trans-protective legislative environment-amid escalating federal anti-trans legislation. Using electronic health record data (2015-2023) from a large safety-net health care system, we conducted a retrospective cohort study comparing mental health outcomes and services among trans (n = 2,898) and cisgender (n = 29,818) adult patients. We applied the Institute of Medicine rank-and-replace method
