Barriers to and facilitators of general dentists performing intraoral biopsies.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of oral potentially malignant disorders and oral cancer relies heavily on biopsy for definitive diagnosis. Yet biopsies remain underused in general dentist practices. To better understand these practice behaviors, the authors examined whether general dentists perform intraoral biopsies and what they perceived to be barriers to and facilitators of their biopsy-related behaviors in practice. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed to licensed members of the Indiana Dental Association. The survey was used to assess demographic characteristics, trainin

Case Report: Metastatic Infratemporal Soft Tissue Myeloma Presenting as a Numb Lower Lip.

This is a case of a patient presenting to his general dental practitioner (GDP) with altered sensation in his lower lip with no obvious cause. Due to a prompt referral, the patient was investigated and diagnosed with an extramedullary presentation of multiple myeloma. A numb lip can present in general dental practice, although this is not common. There are several causes, for example, dental infection or fractured mandible. Clinical relevance: It is very important for the dental practitioner to recognize when there could be a potential sinister underlying cause and prompt referral, under the t

Are we adequately managing the oral health needs of children: a survey of the experience of general dentists and self-assessed confidence in pediatric dentistry.

Childhood caries is a public health problem with a significant burden on the community. The specialist dental workforce cannot adequately manage all treatment needs in children. Therefore, the general dental community remains critical in delivering care to children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the self-rated confidence of general practitioners in treating children. A cross-sectional survey was designed that involved general dentists in various primary care centers in Jordan. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire about their experience and self-perceived level of

Intravenous conscious sedation in children for outpatient dentistry.

The use of general anaesthesia for dental treatment in the NHS outside hospitals has changed over time. Although deaths are uncommon during or immediately after general anaesthesia for dental treatment, they are more likely to occur than with other methods of pain and anxiety reduction, such as local anaesthesia and conscious sedation. Inquiries into recent anaesthetic deaths in dental practice have been critical of the standard of care provided in areas such as pre-operative assessment, monitoring, resuscitation and transfer to specialist critical care facilities.

Status of viral hepatitis in the world community: its incidence among dentists and other dental personnel.

Viral hepatitis is a major public health problem, occurring endemically in all areas of the world. The prevalence of the disease is influenced by numerous factors which may be able to modulate its onset. Study of the epidemiology of viral hepatitis in different geographical, ethnic, social and genetic groups as well as immunological and individual factors has contributed much to our understanding of the disease. Hepatitis viruses are classified into A (infectious hepatitis), B (serum hepatitis) and non-A, non-B. The transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a potential hazard in dental practi

Use of local anesthesia by dental hygienists who completed a Minnesota CE course.

PURPOSE: This study assessed the use of local anesthesia administered by dental hygienists who completed continuing education (CE) courses in Minnesota in 1996. The aims of the study were to: evaluate the use of local anesthesia by these participants; the level of effective injections; the value the dental hygienists placed on this skill; and to provide data in areas less studied, such as injection techniques utilized, and the incidence of complications. METHODS: A pretested, 34-item questionnaire; cover letter; and return self-addressed, stamped envelope were sent in 1997 to dental hygienist

An argument for dental hygiene to develop as a discipline.

UNLABELLED: The practice of dental hygiene was developed to provide oral health education and preventive oral health care, originally for children. It has grown to provide oral health services valued by a broad spectrum of society, but has not attained the desired respect and status accorded to other professional groups. OBJECTIVE: Professional disciplines link actions of practitioners with the science that is the foundation of practice. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether dental hygiene practice could benefit from pursuit of development as a discipline. METHODS: Literature on pr

Exploring Occlusal Caries Management over 2 Decades in France among General Dental Practitioners.

OBJECTIVES: Despite being a central concept in dentistry, minimum intervention dentistry (MID) still faces a gap between evidence and practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the management decisions of French general dental practitioners (FrGDPs) for occlusal carious lesions (OCL) in 2023 and to compare the results to those obtained in 2002 and 2012 using the same questionnaire. METHODS: An online, cross-sectional survey was conducted using a precoded questionnaire among the French dental practice-based research network (ReCOL). The structured questionnaire assessed the restorative

Medicine and dentistry: Understanding the language of dentistry.

BACKGROUND: Dental problems are common in general practice and are responsible for many avoidable hospitalisations. Medicine and dentistry are often practised in isolation, with little shared language or understanding. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to help general practitioners (GPs) maximise effective dental referral strategies by briefly outlining basic dental nomenclature and describing the roles of different types of oral healthcare providers. DISCUSSION: The oral cavity contains hard and soft tissues that are all prone to oral disease, which can lead to systemic disease. It is i

Optimizing esthetics and function through interdisciplinary dentistry.

Esthetic dentistry has evolved dramatically over the years to the point of becoming an expectation from most patients. It is not a fad but is becoming a standard of care for the majority of dental treatment. By learning to practice good quality interdisciplinary dentistry, it is possible to turn a general practice into a comprehensive care practice that caters to high-quality esthetics and function. This article discusses incorporating interdisciplinary dentistry into the general practice and offers some clinical examples.

[Orthognathic surgery: insights from a reader survey].

An NTVT reader survey with 64 participants reveals that orthognathic surgery is also relevant to the general dental practice. A majority of respondents report frequently encountering patients for whom jaw correction might be appropriate, sometimes also discuss this option and feel confident in their role within a combined orthodontic-surgical treatment pathway. This suggests that general dental practitioners play an important role in identifying potential indications, providing initial information, and referring patients promptly. At the same time, however, orthognathic surgery remains a compl

Awareness of medication related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) amongst general dental practitioners.

Background Recent evidence suggests that medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) can be caused by a number of anti-resorptive and anti-angiongenic agents not limited to bisphosphonates. A working knowledge of these medications is important for dental practitioners. Methods A total of 129 general dental practitioners (GDPs) were surveyed regarding their awareness of MRONJ and its causes. Results More than 90% of the GDPs sampled were unaware of anti-resorptive and anti-angiogenic medications other than bisphosphonates that had the potential to cause MRONJ. Just over 40% of the sampled

Neurodevelopmental disorders, dental fear, and caries among children and adolescents in specialty dentistry care: a crosssectional study.

AIM: To assess the prevalence and relationship between dental fear, neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), and caries among children and adolescents referred to a dental clinic with specialist paediatric dentists. CONCLUSION: Neurodevelopmental disorders were overrepresented among specialty dentistry patients in this study, with a ten-fold increase of autism prevalence compared to the general population. Dental fear is associated with increased caries compared to patients without dental fear. Knowledge of best practice of dental treatment for NDD and dental anxiety is a crucial skill for all de

NBDE Part II practice analyses: an overview.

The Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing emphasize the importance of documenting and describing the procedures followed in developing valid test content. As a result, the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations, the testing agency responsible for administering the National Board Dental Examination Part I and Part II, routinely communicates information about the validity of Part II to dental schools and other communities of interest. Since 2000, the content of Part II has been validated through the use of three practice analyses. This article provides an overview of thes

Ethical obliqations and the dental office team.

A hypothetical case of alleged sexual misconduct in a practice with high employee turnover and stress is analyzed by three experts. This case commentary examines the ethical role expectations of an office manager who is not directly involved but becomes aware of the activities. The commentators bring the perspectives of a dental hygienist, academic administrator, and attorney; a teacher of behavioral sciences in a dental school; and a general dentist with many years of practice experience.

The Caries Management System: an evidence-based preventive strategy for dental practitioners. Application for adults.

In the absence of effective caries preventive methods, operative care became established as the means for caries control in general practice. Water fluoridation resulted in a declining caries incidence which decreased further following the advent of fluoridated toothpaste. The challenge today is to develop a non-invasive model of practice that will sustain a low level of primary caries experience in the younger generation and reduce risk of caries experience in the older generations. The Caries Management System is a ten step non-invasive strategy to arrest and remineralize early lesions. The
