Cassava Fiber Prevents High-Fat Diet-Induced Obesity in Mice Through Gut Microbiota Restructuring.

Cassava fiber (CF) is a novel dietary fiber extracted from cassava by-products. To investigate its anti-obesity mechanism, obesity was induced in mice through a high-fat diet (HFD). Dietary supplementation with 10% CF significantly reduced body weight, body fat, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose in mice. CF effectively ameliorated hepatic steatosis and adipocyte hypertrophy, increased the villus height-to-crypt depth ratio, enhanced mucus secretion by intestinal goblet cells, down-regulated the expression of ileal lipid absorption-

Identification of sex-specific splicing via comparative transcriptome analysis of gonads from sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus.

Alternative splicing (AS) is an essential post-transcriptional regulation mechanism for sex differentiation and gonadal development, which has rarely been reported in marine invertebrates. Sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus) is an economically important marine benthic echinoderm with a potential XX/XY sex determination mechanism, whose molecular mechanism in the gonadal differentiation has not been clearly understood. In this study, we analyzed available RNA-seq datasets of male and female gonads to explore if AS mechanism exerts an essential function in sex differentiation and gonadal devel

Merkel cell carcinoma.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the skin is a rare, aggressive form of skin cancer that metastasizes to other parts of the body. This cutaneous neuroendocrine tumour mainly affects older people, with most cases generally occurring over the age of 50 years. Merkel cell polyomavirus has been shown to induce gene mutations resulting in this skin cancer, with immunosuppression and ultraviolet radiation being other key risk factors in its pathogenesis. MCC is clinically seen as a rapidly enlarging, isolated, irregular erythematous nodule typically found on sun-exposed sites. Diagnosis is through cli

Curation of Gene-Protein-Reaction Associations Enhances the iPichia Genome-Scale Metabolic Model of Komagataella phaffii.

Komagataella phaffii is a commercially valuable yeast widely used in biotechnology due to its Crabtree-negative metabolism, which enables it to sustain respiratory growth and efficiently utilize carbon sources even in the presence of excess glucose. To better understand and predict its metabolic behavior, genome-scale metabolic models are commonly employed. Within these models, Gene-Protein-Reaction (GPR) associations play a crucial role in the predictive performance of models. The previously developed iPichia genome-scale metabolic model for K. phaffii was further refined in this study throug

Beyond environmental risk: Genetic insights into lung cancer susceptibility through whole exome analysis.

BACKGROUND: unlike familial non polyposis colorectal cancer (Lynch syndrome) and familial breast cancer, no genes have been confidently associated with familial lung cancer with the exception of the EGFR and the TP53 genes. Germinal Pathogenetic Variants (GPV) in these two genes account for 0.34-0.9% and 0.8 % lung adenocarcinoma, respectively. OBJECTIVE: the aim of this study was to identify rare genetic variants associated with higher risk of developing lung cancer. METHODS: we performed exome sequencing in the germinal DNA of 16 patients who had a positive familial history of lung cancer:

Identification of metabolism-related subtypes and feature genes of pre-eclampsia.

The heterogeneity of pre-eclampsia (PE) complicates its pathogenesis, which remains incompletely understood. Emerging evidence indicates a significant role of metabolism in the pathophysiology of PE. We procured the PE dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus database and sourced a published compilation of metabolism-related genes, then employed consensus clustering to classify PE subtypes. Subsequently, we examined the relationships of these subtypes with metabolic features and immune infiltration. Feature genes were identified using weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and fu
