Systemic lupus erythematosus.

Recent investigations in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have disclosed the presence of paramyxo-virus-like nucleocapsids in the cytoplasm of renal endothelial cells of patients with this disease. Elaborate techniques have failed to demonstrate conclusively that these are indeed viruses. Concomitantly, there is increasing evidence that SLE patients have defective cell-mediated-immunity. A 3-year-old child with SLE exhibited clinical evidence of defective cellular immunity. At postmortem, paramyxoviruslike tubular structures were demonstrated in her kidneys. Additional findings included the

Alexia without agraphia associated with spleniogeniculate infarction.

Pure alexia, following an infarction in the distribution of the left posterior cerebral artery, is attributed to damage of the left occipital lobe and the splenium of the corpus callosum. We describe a case of pure alexia in a 57-year-old woman with infarction of the left lateral geniculate body and the splenium of the corpus callosum, a variation on this classic disconnection syndrome.

Delayed-onset hemidystonia and chorea following contralateral infarction of the posterolateral thalamus. A case report.

A 68 year-old man developed progressive hemidystonia and chorea 8 months after a contralateral thalamic stroke. The neurological examination also showed a right pyramidal syndrome without hemiparesis, a right horizontal sectoranopia, and a right hemihypesthesia for all sensory modalities. The MRI revealed infarctions in the left medial temporo-occipital lobes and left posterolateral thalamus, corresponding to the vascular territories of both the thalamo-geniculate and posterolateral choroidal arterial pedicles. The thalamic lesion involved the pulvinar, the lateral geniculate body, and the ven

EGR4 is critical for cell-fate determination and phenotypic maintenance of geniculate ganglion neurons underlying sweet and umami taste.

The sense of taste starts with activation of receptor cells in taste buds by chemical stimuli which then communicate this signal via innervating oral sensory neurons to the CNS. The cell bodies of oral sensory neurons reside in the geniculate ganglion (GG) and nodose/petrosal/jugular ganglion. The geniculate ganglion contains two main neuronal populations: BRN3A+ somatosensory neurons that innervate the pinna and PHOX2B+ sensory neurons that innervate the oral cavity. While much is known about the different taste bud cell subtypes, considerably less is known about the molecular identities of P

Case Report: MRI Diagnosis of Wilson's Disease in a 3-Year-Old Dalmatian.

A 3-year-old Dalmatian was presented with anorexia, vomiting, and lethargy that progressed to neurological signs with a mixed hepatopathy. MRI identified bilaterally symmetric, ill-defined hyperintensities in the thalamus, medial and lateral geniculate bodies, and red nuclei on T2-weighted (T2W) and transverse T2W fluid-attenuation inversion-recovery (T2-FLAIR) images, and bilaterally symmetric, ill-defined T1-hyperintensities in the lentiform nuclei and thalamus suggestive of an underlying metabolic dysfunction. Systemic workup revealed an underlying hepatopathy. A hepatic biopsy revealed sev

Visual system degeneration induced by blast overpressure.

The effect of blast overpressure on visual system pathology was studied in 14 male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 360-432 g. Blast overpressure was simulated using a compressed-air driven shock tube, with the aim of studying a range of overpressures causing sublethal injury. Neither control (unexposed) rats nor rats exposed to 83 kiloPascals (kPa) overpressure showed evidence of visual system pathology. Neurological injury to brain visual pathways was observed in male rats surviving blast overpressure exposures of 104-110 kPa and 129-173 kPa. Optic nerve fiber degeneration was ipsilateral to the

Behavioral and neuroanatomical effects on exposure to White noise in rats.

Noise pollution is a severe public health problem as continuous exposure to even moderate noise levels between 55-65 dB can lead to various pathologies, including neurological states. In the present study, we assessed the ultrastructural alterations in selective auditory pathways of the rat brain following high intensity white noise exposure. In addition, learning, anxiety-like behavior and locomotor activity were assessed. Adult male rats were exposed to 100 dB noise, one hour daily, for 10 consecutive days. The evaluations were performed on day 11. Exposure to noise did not affect learning o

Microsurgical anatomy of the auditory radiations: revealing the enigmatic acoustic pathway from a surgical viewpoint.

OBJECTIVE: The thalamocortical projections of the auditory system have not been detailed via microanatomical fiber dissections from a surgical viewpoint. The aim of this study was to delineate the course of the auditory radiations (ARs) from the medial geniculate body to their final destination in the auditory cortex. The authors' additional purpose was to display the relevant neural structures in relation to their course en route to Heschl's gyrus. METHODS: White matter fibers were dissected layer by layer in a lateral-to-medial, inferolateral-to-superomedial, and inferior-to-superior fashio

"The diencephalon of Ptilocercus lowii (pen-tailed tree-shrew)".

The pen-tailed tree-shrew (Ptilocercus lowii) has been regarded by Le Gros Clark (1926), and Martin (1968) to possess more primitive morphological and to a certain extent, neuro-anatomical characteristics than the other tree-shrew species belonging to the sub-family Tupaiinae. Investigations have been carried out on the diencephalon of Ptilocercus lowii which has not been completely done by Le Gros Clark and other workers since 1926, to find out whether the diencephalon has actually undegone any phylogenetic changes that should be more advanced than those of the Insectivora or remain more prim

Quantitative analysis of herpes simplex virus in cranial nerve ganglia.

A susceptible individual exposed to herpes simplex virus (HSV) will develop latent infection in multiple cranial nerve ganglia. There are a few quantitative studies of the viral load within the trigeminal ganglion, but none that investigate other cranial nerve ganglia. In this study, human trigeminal, geniculate, vestibular (Scarpa's) and cochlear (spiral) ganglia were obtained from willed body donors. Real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of the HSV DNA polymerase gene was performed on ipsilateral ganglion sets from the same individual. Viral load, expressed as HSV g

Retinal Input to the Primate Lateral Geniculate Nucleus Revealed by Injection of a Different Label Into Each Eye.

The primate lateral geniculate nucleus has long been a favorite structure among anatomists because of its striking lamination. It has been shown that each lamina receives input from a different eye using various single label techniques but never by double labeling. Here, we illustrate the organization of retinal inputs to the lateral geniculate nucleus by injection of cholera toxin-B conjugated to Alexa Fluor-488 into the right eye and cholera toxin-B conjugated to Alexa Fluor-594 into the left eye.

Auditory thalamus dysfunction and pathophysiology in tinnitus: a predictive network hypothesis.

Tinnitus is the perception of a 'ringing' sound without an acoustic source. It is generally accepted that tinnitus develops after peripheral hearing loss and is associated with altered auditory processing. The thalamus is a crucial relay in the underlying pathways that actively shapes processing of auditory signals before the respective information reaches the cerebral cortex. Here, we review animal and human evidence to define thalamic function in tinnitus. Overall increased spontaneous firing patterns and altered coherence between the thalamic medial geniculate body (MGB) and auditory cortic

Performance limitations of relay neurons.

Relay cells are prevalent throughout sensory systems and receive two types of inputs: driving and modulating. The driving input contains receptive field properties that must be transmitted while the modulating input alters the specifics of transmission. For example, the visual thalamus contains relay neurons that receive driving inputs from the retina that encode a visual image, and modulating inputs from reticular activating system and layer 6 of visual cortex that control what aspects of the image will be relayed back to visual cortex for perception. What gets relayed depends on several fact

Quantitative alterations after long-term alcohol administration in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) in the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

The effects of chronic excessive alcohol ingestion on the central nervous system were studied in neurons of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) in the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). In this nucleus, neuron density and other morphometric parameters such as the somatic volume of the cells have been investigated both under normal conditions and under alcohol intoxication. Special attention was given to the possibility that positive somatic heteropycnosis may be a sign of imminent cell death. In addition, the percentage volumes occupied by normal neuronal soma and by affected cells were

[Expansion and thickness of the visual cortex of microphthalmic mice and healthy Wistar animals].

In connection with our studies about the development and the structure of the visual system of the brain of normal and genetically microphthalmic mice in this paper we have investigated the extend of the visual cortex and the thickness of the primary visual cortex (area Oc1). The most important results are: The size of the surface of the neocortex and of the areas Oc1 and Oc2m shows no significant differences between the normal and the microphthalmic mice. The whole thickness of area Oc1 is at day 20 in the microphthalmic mice significantly greater than in normal animals. In the microphthalmic

A demonstration of two distinct geniculocortical projection patterns in albino ferrets.

The geniculocortical pathways of albino ferrets have been studied by injecting lectin bound horseradish peroxidase into the visual cortex and then studying the geniculate distribution of retrogradely labelled cells in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus. It has been shown that in ferrets, as in Siamese cats, there are two quite distinct patterns of geniculocortical projection. One of the patterns seen in ferrets is comparable to the 'Midwestern' pattern previously described in Siamese cats, while the other is comparable to the 'Boston' pattern.

[Bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia (author's transl)].

A case is reported of a patient with bilateral internuclear ophtalmoplegia which followed a single limited lesion of the two medial longitudinal fasciculi (M.L.F.), with degeneration of the right internal nucleus. The authors feel that the exact localization of this minute lesions, associated with right internal nucleus degeneration, can assist in supplying replies to some unanswered questions concerning the M.L.F. syndrome.
