Registration of family vital events in a conflict-induced displacement setting.

BACKGROUND: In many low- and middle-income countries, the registration of family-related vital events (marriages and births) remains incomplete, with consequences for women's and their children's ability to exercise fundamental rights. In humanitarian and displacement settings, the absence of documentation creates additional barriers to legal recognition, identification and protection, especially if the population is already at risk of statelessness, as in the case of the Rohingya, a minority ethnic group that has experienced genocide. DATA AND METHODS: Drawing on unique primary survey data c

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander worldviews and cultural safety transforming sexual assault service provision for children and young people.

Child Sexual Assault (CSA) in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is a complex issue that cannot be understood in isolation from the ongoing impacts of colonial invasion, genocide, assimilation, institutionalised racism and severe socio-economic deprivation. Service responses to CSA are often experienced as racist, culturally, financially and/or geographically inaccessible. A two-day forum, National Yarn Up: Sharing the Wisdoms and Challenges of Young People and Sexual Abuse, was convened by sexual assault services to identify the main practice and policy concerns regarding worki

Anger, PTSD, and the nuclear family: a study of Cambodian refugees.

This study profiles the family-directed anger of traumatized Cambodian refugees, all survivors of the Pol Pot genocide (1975-1979), who were patients at a psychiatric clinic in Lowell, MA, USA. We focus on the nuclear family (NF) unit, the NF unit defined as the patient's "significant other" (i.e. spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend) and children. Survey data were collected from a convenience sample of 143 Cambodian refugee patients from October 2006 to August 2007. The study revealed that 48% (68/143) of the patients had anger directed toward a NF member in the last month, with anger directed towa

Accounting for uncertainty in conflict mortality estimation: an application to the Gaza War in 2023-2024.

The ongoing Gaza War has resulted in significant loss of life and intensified an existing humanitarian crisis. Despite increasing demand for accurate data, mortality estimates remain challenging due to the inherent 'statistical fog of war'. Accurate quantification is hindered by incomplete reporting and uncertain age-sex distributions of casualties. Official death tolls are likely influenced by damaged infrastructure, security disruptions, and political motivations, complicating detailed demographic verification. Our study introduces a novel methodological approach-a Bayesian model incorporati

Practice-Informed Approaches to Addressing Substance Abuse and Trauma Exposure in Urban Native Families Involved with Child Welfare.

Similar to families from other groups, urban-based American Indian and Alaska Native ("Native") family members involved with the child welfare system due to substance abuse issues are also often challenged by untreated trauma exposure. The link between these conditions and the history of genocidal policies aimed at destroying Native family ties, as well as experiences of ongoing discrimination, bring added dimensions for consideration when pro- viding services to these families. Practice-based evidence indicates that the trauma-informed and culturally responsive model developed by the Denver I

Aboriginal new world epidemiolgy and medical care, and the impact of Old World disease imports.

Various workers, including T. D. Stewart, claim that the aboriginal Americas were relatively disease-free because of the bering Strait cold-screen, eliminating many pathogens, and the paucity of zoonotic infections because of few domestic animals. Evidence of varying validity suggests that precontact Americns had their own strains of treponemic infections, bacillary and amoebic dysenteries, influenza and viral penumonia and other respiratory diseases, salmonellosis and perhaps other food poisoning, various arthritides, some endoparasites such as the ascarids, and several geographically circums

Scaling up home-visiting to promote early childhood development and prevent violence in Rwanda: a hybrid type-2 effectiveness-implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: Children in impoverished families-especially those affected by violence-face risks to healthy development. In the years of strong economic recovery since the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, the Rwandan Government has invested in early child development, social and child protection and violence prevention, but few strategies for scaling evidence-based interventions (EBIs) in these areas have been studied. METHODS: We present a Hybrid Type-2 Implementation-Effectiveness study of the PLAY Collaborative implementation strategy to engage government and other stakeholders in scaling Su

Geospatial evaluation of radiologic access in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Rwanda has aimed to rebuild its health care system since the Rwandan genocide against the Tutsis in 1994, though one of the challenges has been a scarcity of radiologic resources. OBJECTIVE: To assess the location and accessibility of radiologic facilities in Rwanda using geospatial mapping and population-based data. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in May 2023 using location and radiologic modality data provided by the Department of Radiology at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali and the WorldPop database, a publicly available database providing open-access

Local perspectives on Ebola during its tenth outbreak in DR Congo: A nationwide qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) struggled to end the tenth outbreak of Ebola virus disease (Ebola), which appeared in North Kivu in 2018. It was reported that rumors were hampering the response effort. We sought to identify any rumors that could have influenced outbreak containment and affected prevention in unaffected areas of DR Congo. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study in DR Congo over a period of 2 months (from August 1 to September 30, 2019) using in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs). The participants were recruited from five region

Improving recognition of common mental health disorders in Cambodia: Validation of the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 and development of a brief mental health screener.

Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bear 80% of the burden from common mental health disorders like depression and anxiety. One LMIC, Cambodia, has a mental health care gap due to history of genocide and civil war, persistent poverty, and under-resourced mental health system. Collaborative care models can improve access to and quality of mental health care by integrating care into existing health care infrastructure. While tools like the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 are widely used to detect unmet mental health needs and provide measurement-based care, their validity has not been established for many

Medical mistrust in the context of Ebola: Implications for intended care-seeking and quarantine policy support in the United States.

This investigation explores Ebola conspiracy beliefs, a form of medical mistrust, and their potential impact on health behavior. Results of an online survey in the United States in December 2014 demonstrated that 16 percent of 202 participants held conspiracy beliefs. Participants who were less knowledgeable about Ebola, more mistrustful of medical organizations, and more xenophobic more strongly endorsed conspiracy beliefs. Participants who more strongly endorsed conspiracy beliefs reported that they would be less likely to seek care for Ebola and were less supportive of quarantining people r

A Review of the Evolution of Dairy Policies and Regulations in Rwanda and Its Implications on Inputs and Services Delivery.

The dairy sector in Rwanda plays a key role in improving nutrition and generating income mostly for rural households. Despite the Rwandan 1994 genocide that left around 80% of dairy cows decimated, the dairy sector has experienced significant growth in the past two decades through government, development organisations, and donor programs, and through the nascent vibrant public-private partnership. In this paper, we reviewed and documented the evolution of the dairy policies, programs, and regulations in Rwanda and how they have contributed to the development of the dairy sector. The policy cha

[Continuity--adjustment--autonomy--physician--patient--an overview of medical cultural philosophy in former East Germany].

The author probes into the "culture" of medical thinking in the former GDR in respect of the interlinking of socialisation of the doctor, within the framework of socialism, with the fate of the patient; the fundamentals of the development of science and of the pattern of cultural life; and the development of moral consciousness and health policy under the influence of Marxist-Leninist teachings. (One should not neglect the difference made by the author between "official Marxism-Leninism as decreed by the state" and "Marxist theory" as well as "public level of consciousness".) Transforming through leadership: a qualitative study of successful American Indian Alaska Native behavioral health leaders.

BACKGROUND: Effective leadership is vital in the struggle to decrease the behavioral health disparities between the US population and American Indian Alaska Native (AIAN) communities. AIAN communities have a pre-colonization history of highly effective leadership, yet some AIAN leadership traditions have been eradicated through decades of trauma and genocidal efforts. There is a paucity of research on AIAN public health leadership, and most existing research relies on samples of individuals holding leadership positions rather than individuals purposely selected because of their effectiveness.

[Mental disease in two classical music composers].

A study οn two neglected classical music composers suffering a not syphilitic mental disease, is attempted here, syphilis of the central nervous system being frequent in that time. A brief overview on the psychiatric ailments of many great composers reveals suicide attempts and more or less severe depression following external events. The issue of a possible relationship between mental disease and (musical) creativity can be discussed, as mood swings and a certain tendency to melancholia are frequent features of a talented brain (a fact that can also be detected in their works). The first case

The linguistic situation on the Ukrainian Black Sea coast - Ukrainian, Russian and Suržyk as "native language", "primary code", frequently used codes and codes of linguistic socialization during childhood.

The study analyses the linguistic situation in the three Ukrainian oblasts on the Black Sea coast using survey data collected from 1,200 respondents before the Russian attack on Ukraine. At the end of the 18th century, this region was the core of a "new Russian" governate during Tsarist times. Previously, the region had been ruled by Tatars and there were neither Russian nor Ukrainian settlements. From the 19th century onwards, the Ukrainian and Russian population dominated. Since the annexation of the Crimea, these oblasts represent a crucial part of the Kremlin's plan to establish an "expand

Fear and comfort: the plight of hidden Jewish children in wartime-Poland.

Jewish children in hiding during the Holocaust undoubtedly share many experiences. These have affected their lives in various ways. In general, many, if not most, formerly hidden have learned to master their painful childhood memories and paradoxically harness these to further their adult development As a person dealing these past nine years in the study of the Gentile rescuers of both Jewish adults and children, from countries of different political, economic and cultural backgrounds, and of various and even conflicting attitudes towards the Jewish population in their midst, I found the exper

The genetics of deafness.

Deafness is an etiologically heterogeneous trait with many known genetic and environmental causes. Genetic factors account for at least half of all cases of profound congenital deafness, and can be classified by the mode of inheritance and the presence or absence of characteristic clinical features that may permit the diagnosis of a specific form of syndromic deafness. The identification of more than 120 independent genes for deafness has provided profound new insights into the pathophysiology of hearing, as well as many unexpected surprises. Although a large number of genes can clearly cause

Drug-induced Nitrosogenesis/Carcinogenesis turns out to be a ubiquitous, pervasive, large-scale, poorly controllable concept for the academic community, which underlies the long-term, permanent modification of the human genome by contact with nitrosamines/NDSRIs, which ultimately leads to the generation of diverse cancers, but also melanoma in particular.
