Our hands rarely lie still while we talk. Some hand movements, like washing dishes or other household tasks, are often unrelated to what we express in speech. Other hand movements, known as gestures, are deeply integrated with verbal communication. Past research with adults has found strong temporal synchrony between speech and gesture, particularly as compared to speech and action. This evidence supports the claim that speech and gesture emerge from a single integrated system and suggests that gestures hold a unique status in communication compared to other kinds of hand movements. However, t

The phenomena of out-of-body experience (OBE) and near-death experience (NDE) have attracted increasing research interest. In this study, we used a set of videos to examine verbal and gestural descriptions of a group of people talking about their OBE experiences. Two chi-square tests were used to find out what type of sentences and what type of gestures were more frequently used to describe normally-possible and normally-impossible OBE events. The results showed that normally-impossible OBE events were described more frequently by metaphoric sentences than literal sentences. Verbal description

BACKGROUND: Body awareness (BA) and proprioception, which are essential components of the sense of agency (SA), are often altered in various mental disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the relationship between BA, proprioception, and SA, as well as the methods to manipulate them, remain unclear. This study explored using real-time gesture sonification (GS), i.e., wearable technology transforming body movements into sounds, to enhance proprioception, BA, and thus the SA.
METHODS: In this within-subjects design, 17 healthy adults (mean age = 25.5 years) with varying

Understanding the cortical activity patterns driving dexterous upper limb motion has the potential to benefit a broad clinical population living with limited mobility through the development of novel brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. The present study examines the activity of ensembles of motor cortical neurons recorded using microelectrode arrays in the dominant hemisphere of two BrainGate clinical trial participants with cervical spinal cord injury as they attempted to perform a set of 48 different hand gestures. Although each participant displayed a unique organization of their res

In the evolving field of human-computer interaction (HCI), gesture recognition has emerged as a critical focus, with smart gloves equipped with sensors playing one of the most important roles. Despite the significance of dynamic gesture recognition, most research on data gloves has concentrated on static gestures, with only a small percentage addressing dynamic gestures or both. This study explores the development of a low-cost smart glove prototype designed to capture and classify dynamic hand gestures for game control and presents a prototype of data gloves equipped with five flex sensors, f

Rapid advancements in immersive communications and artificial intelligence have created a pressing demand for high-performance tactile sensing gloves capable of delivering high sensitivity and a wide sensing range. Unfortunately, existing tactile sensing gloves fall short in terms of user comfort and are ill-suited for underwater applications. To address these limitations, we propose a flexible hand gesture recognition glove (GRG) that contains high-performance micropillar tactile sensors (MPTSs) inspired by the flexible tube foot of a starfish. The as-prepared flexible sensors offer a wide wo

Striving for more robust and natural control of multi-fingered hand prostheses, we are studying electrical impedance tomography (EIT) as a method to monitor residual muscle activations. Previous work has shown promising results for hand gesture recognition, but also lacks generalization across multiple sessions and users. Thus, the present paper aims for a detailed analysis of an existing EIT dataset acquired with a 16-electrode wrist band as a prerequisite for further improvements of machine learning results on this type of signal. The performed t-SNE analysis confirms a much stronger inter-s

OBJECTIVES: Symptoms after sport-related concussions (SRC) are common. Because post-concussion symptoms are often not clearly visible, speech-accompanying gestures may help clinicians to gain additional information about the patient's history and symptoms during medical consultation. We hypothesized that athletes with SRC and who suffered from persisting symptoms would display more gestures during concussion assessment protocols when compared to non-concussed athletes because of the athletes' previous motor-sensory experiences made during the concussive event.
DESIGN: A retrospective cross-se

Despite the frequent suggestion in the literature that Broca's area is a common link between vocal and gestural models of the origins of language, this has never been established within a single motor-production study. In the present functional MRI experiment, participants were asked to describe the spatial properties of objects (e.g. a motorcycle) using speech, pantomime, and drawing. Pairwise conjunction analyses revealed that the left inferior gyrus - in combination with the left basal ganglia and ventral anterior thalamus - was jointly activated for the production of speech and pantomime b

The presence of gesture during speech has been shown to impact perception, comprehension, learning, and memory in normal adults and typically developing children. In neurotypical individuals, the impact of viewing co-speech gestures representing an object and/or action (i.e., iconic gesture) or speech rhythm (i.e., beat gesture) has also been observed at the neural level. Yet, despite growing evidence of delayed gesture development in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), few studies have examined how the brain processes multimodal communicative cues occurring during everyday communic

The strong predominance of right-handedness appears to be a uniquely human characteristic, whereas the left-cerebral dominance for vocalization occurs in many species, including frogs, birds, and mammals. Right-handedness may have arisen because of an association between manual gestures and vocalization in the evolution of language. I argue that language evolved from manual gestures, gradually incorporating vocal elements. The transition may be traced through changes in the function of Broca's area. Its homologue in monkeys has nothing to do with vocal control, but contains the so-called "mirr

The production of transitive limb gestures is optimized when the appropriate tool can be physically manipulated. Little research has addressed the independent contributions of visual and nonvisual sources of sensory information to this phenomenon. In this study, 12 control, 37 LHD, and 50 RHD stroke patients performed transitive limb gestures to pantomime (to verbal command with the object visible) and object manipulation. Performance was more accurate in the object manipulation condition, suggesting that haptic and kinesthetic cues are important for transitive gesture production. Various patt

Mid-air gesture interaction is a promising input modality for in-vehicle information systems, but the relative suitability of static and dynamic gestures across vehicle functions remains unclear. Thirty-three licenced drivers completed a within-subject driving-simulator experiment involving nine in-vehicle function-control tasks. Vehicle-control stability, hand-off-wheel duration, gesture-execution fidelity, and subjective user experience were assessed, and linear mixed-effects models examined gesture type, task, and their interaction. Gesture type did not significantly affect longitudinal- or

Recognition of motion intent via surface electromyography (EMG) has become increasingly practical for prosthesis control, but lacking residual muscle sites remains a major obstacle to its use by high-level amputees. Currently, there are few approaches to upper limb prosthesis control for individuals with amputations proximal to the elbow, all of which suffer from one or more of three primary problems: invasiveness, the need for intensive training, and lacking functionality. Using surface EMG sensors placed on the lower leg and a natural mapping between degrees of freedom of the leg and the arm

In "Two heads are better than one," "head" stands for people and focuses the message on the intelligence of people. This is an example of figurative language through metonymy, where substituting a whole entity by one of its parts focuses attention on a specific aspect of the entity. Whereas metaphors, another figurative language device, are substitutions based on similarity, metonymy involves substitutions based on associations. Both are figures of speech but are also expressed in coverbal gestures during multimodal communication. The closest neuropsychological studies of metonymy in gestures

Anosognosia is a multifaceted, neuro-psychiatric syndrome characterized by defective awareness of a variety of perceptuo-motor, cognitive or emotional deficits. The syndrome is also characterized by modularity, i.e., deficits of awareness in one domain (e.g., spatial perception) co-existing with spared functions in another domain (e.g., memory). Anosognosia has mainly been reported after right hemisphere lesions. It is however somewhat surprising that no studies have thus far specifically explored the possibility that lack of awareness involves apraxia, i.e., a deficit in the ability to perfor

BACKGROUND: Apraxia in patients with stroke may be overlooked, as clumsiness and deficient gestural communication are often attributed to frequently coexisting sensorimotor deficits and aphasia. Early and reliable detection of apraxia by a bedside test is relevant for functional outcome in patients with stroke. The present study was aimed at constructing a new bedside screening test for apraxia, called the Apraxia Screen of TULIA (AST), based on the comprehensive standardised Test for Upper-Limb Apraxia (TULIA).
METHODS: First, an item-reduction analysis of the TULIA (48 gestures) was perform

OBJECTIVES: Defective imitation of meaningless gestures has repeatedly been demonstrated in patients with apraxia and has been interpreted as being due to a deficit of motor execution. There is, however, controversy as to whether some impairment of imitation also occurs in patients with right brain damage. The aim was to compare defective imitation in patients with left and right brain damage and to explore whether there are qualitative differences between them.
METHODS: Imitation was examined in 80 patients with left brain damage (LBD) and aphasia, 40 patients with right brain damage (RBD),

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) for surgical workflow analysis often fails to generalize because surgical actions lack a standardized, fine-grained representation. Gesture-level "tokenization" of surgery, capturing instrument-tissue interactions as the smallest intentional functional units, offers greater technical specificity than phase- or step-level labels and has demonstrated associations with proficiency and clinical outcomes. However, the field remains fragmented by heterogeneous gesture terminology, limiting dataset interoperability and model reproducibility.
METHODS: We con
