An allergic disease may develop in any organ or system. The respective etiological factors include foreign proteins, infectious agents such as various microbes, viruses, moulds, parasites, chemical compounds often in the form of drugs usually designated as haptens, polysaccharides, benign and malignant neoplasms. Of the factors operating in the causal pathogenesis of such diseases the most important one is an exaggerated formation of antibodies, which appears to be uncontrolled and occurring irrespective of the demands of the organism. The essential morphological features in allergic inflammat

Heliorhodopsin (HeR) is a family of microbial rhodopsin discovered in 2018, whose genes are found from archaea, bacteria, unicellular eukaryotes, and giant viruses. Viral heliorhodopsins are classified into VHeR1-4 based on their amino acid sequences, and we previously reported the proton transport activity for V2HeR3. In this study, we report molecular properties of V2HeR2. V2HeR2 contains all-trans retinal predominantly in the dark, and the protonated Schiff base is stabilized by a counterion. The photocycle is described by the sequentially-formed K, M, and O intermediates. The O intermediat

Headache with variable characteristics and associated signs and symptoms may occur in all forms of arteritis. Giant cell arteritis, one of the most common forms, involves branches of the external and, more rarely, of the internal carotid arteries. It occurs in patients over the age of 50 and is characterized by fever, new-onset headache, prominence and tenderness of the temporal artery, claudication of the masticatory muscles on chewing, amaurosis fugax, and visual loss. Headache is the initial symptom in 48% of patients and is present in 90%. Primary central nervous system angiitis is a rare

Transfusion of blood from a simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)- and simian T-cell lymphotropic virus-infected sooty mangabey (designated FGb) to rhesus and pig-tailed macaques resulted in the development of neurologic disease in addition to AIDS. To investigate the role of SIV in neurologic disease, virus was isolated from a lymph node of a pig-tailed macaque (designated PGm) and the cerebrospinal fluid of a rhesus macaque (designated ROn2) and passaged to additional macaques. SIV-related neuropathogenic effects were observed in 100% of the pig-tailed macaques inoculated with either virus. Le

Most biopsies of cutaneous vasculitis will exhibit a small vessel neutrophilic vasculitis [leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV)] that is associated with immune complexes on direct immunofluorescence examination or, less commonly, antineutrophilic cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) by indirect immunofluorescence testing. Is in uncommon for skin biopsy to reveal solely a neutrophilic arteritis signifying the presence of cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa or, if accompanied by significant lobular panniculitis, nodular vasculitis/erythema induratum. In other cases, cutaneous vascular damage (fibrinoid necrosi

The sciences of vaccinology and of immunology were created just two centuries ago by Jenner's scientific studies of prevention of smallpox through inoculation with cowpox virus. This rudimentary beginning was expanded greatly by the giants of late 19th and early twentieth centuries biomedical sciences. The period from 1930 to 1950 was a transitional era with the introduction of chick embryos and minced tissues for propagating viruses and Rickettsiae in vitro for vaccines. Modern era vaccinology began about 1950 as a continuum following notable advances made during the 1940s and World War II. I

A group of dogs with naturally occurring canine distemper developed prodromal systemic symptoms followed by neurological disorders. The post-infection courses of these diseases lasted approximately 2 months. A varying degree of demyelination and inclusion body formation was found mostly in the cerebella of virologically confirmed cases with little or no inflammatory response. The distribution of canine distemper virus antigen coincided with the histopathological lesions. The animals had moderate to high neutralizing titres to the virus in their sera and a low level of interferon-like activity

Central nervous system (CNS) lesions were studied from weanling hamsters inoculated with the HBS strain of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) virus. The animals showed clincial signs of acute encephalitis between 8 and 18 days post-inoculation (PI), but all survivors were clinically recovered by day 21 PI. Nevertheless, 13 of 14 hamster brains examined by light and electron microscopy between days 21 and 59 PI had chronic lesions which contained morphologic evidence of persistent viral infection. The lesions developed preferentially in the subependymal areas of the lateral and fourth v

In this study, we compare the physicochemical interactions of cationic surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), at concentrations lower than their CMC with model systems mimicking the lipidic content of the SARS-CoV-2 envelope in terms of the charge of polar heads and the composition of acyl chains. The DOPC/DMPS/PI 50:35:15 (molar ratio) Langmuir monolayers treated as 2D models exhibited increased fluidity and a shift of surface pressure-area per molecule isotherms toward larger areas upon surfactant interaction. Liposomes (3D models) showed an in

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is an immune-mediated vasculitis that affects large arteries. It has been hypothesized that viruses may trigger inflammation within the vessel walls. Genetic studies on human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) have previously reported HLA-DRB1*04 as a susceptible allele for GCA and HLA-DRB1*15 as a protective allele for GCA. Here, we discuss the clinical presentation, laboratory findings, HLA class I and class II analysis results, and management of patients with extracranial large-vessel (LV) GCA, detected at least six weeks after recovery from COVID-19. This case series enco

Some insects use endogenous reverse transcriptase (RT) to make variable viral copy DNA (vcDNA) fragments from viral RNA in linear (lvcDNA) and circular (cvcDNA) forms. The latter form is easy to extract selectively. The vcDNA produces small interfering RNA (siRNA) variants that inhibit viral replication via the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway. The vcDNA is also autonomously inserted into the host genome as endogenous viral elements (EVE) that can also result in RNAi. We hypothesized that similar mechanisms occurred in shrimp. We used the insect methods to extract circular viral copy DNA (cvcDN

We studied the central nervous system (CNS) of rhesus macaques during series of vaccination experiments in which attenuated simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), SIVmac239Deltanef, was applied to the tonsils and the animals were later challenged with pathogenic SIVmac251 or SHIV/89.6P via tonsils or rectum. The pathologic lesions were graded on a scale of 0-5. The lesions were in general very mild, with a score of 0.5, except for one case, in which the animal had progressed to simian AIDS (SAIDS) and had severe lesions of grade 4. Except for the SAIDS case, the most common lesions were meningit

We report an autopsy case of granulomatous angiitis of the central nervous system (GANS) complicated by the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). A 88-year old female was admitted because of progressive mental deterioration, fever, and vomiting. A computed tomogram disclosed bilateral periventricular lucency, and a low-density area in the right occipital lobe. Laboratory studies during her hospital stay, revealed hyponatremia, hypoalbuminemia, and increased antidiuretic hormone. Treatment with antibiotics, hypertonic saline solution, and steroids, and water restriction was in

Microbial rhodopsins in giant viruses are classified into two major classes: VR1 and VR2. Organic Lake Phycodnavirus Rhodopsin 2 (OLPVR2) belongs to the VR2 family, while OLPVR1 is a viral channelrhodopsin. OLPVR2 is known to form a pentamer, and it was proposed that OLPVR2 is a light-gated ion channel, whose ion pathway is not inside the monomer but in the pentameric center. OLPVR2 possesses a water-containing pentagonal cluster structure in the retinal Schiff base region, which is very similar to that of the OLPVR1 and bacteriorhodopsin (BR), a light-driven proton pump. In this study, we app

Kawasaki disease (KD), first described in Japan in 1967 by Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki, is an acute multi system vasculitis of infancy and early childhood characterised by high fever, rash, conjunctivitis, inflammation of the mucous membranes, erythematous induration of the hands and feet and cervical lymphadenopathy. Synonyms for Kawasaki disease include "Kawasaki syndrome" and "mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome" (MCLS, MLNS, MCLNS). Kawasaki disease was initially presumed to occur only in Japan; but now this disease is known in the whole world. The first cases in the United States were reported in

PURPOSE: To document the presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) genomic signatures among Acanthamoeba hosts recovered from patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) and in contaminated lens cases.
METHODS: We used a combination of PCR sequencing and shotgun metagenomics to detect and confirm the presence of HSV genomic signatures in Acanthamoeba hosts and lens cases. Clinical outcomes were correlated with the prevalence of host HSV signatures.
RESULTS: HSV genomic signatures were detected in 26% (n = 6) of Acanthamoeba hosts recovered from patients with culture confirmed AK. HSV-1 and HSV-2

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Varicella zoster virus (VZV) antigen has been detected in temporal arteries (TAs) of individuals with giant cell arteritis (GCA), the most common systemic vasculitis in older adults. Thus, we explored the contribution of VZV to GCA pathogenesis.
METHODS: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded TA sections from biopsy-positive GCA participants with VZV antigen (GCA/VZV-positive; n = 20) and without (GCA/VZV-negative, n = 20) and from normal participants with VZV antigen (control/VZV-positive, n = 11) and without (control/VZV-negative, n = 20) were analyzed by targeted RNA

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection of rabbits provides a safe and relatively inexpensive in vivo mammalian system for the study of the mechanisms controlling expression of a unique group of lymphotropic retroviruses. This group of viruses, which includes C-type human T-lymphotropic virus types I and II and lentiviruslike human immunodeficiency virus type 1, possesses genes coding for "trans-activating" products. Rabbits experimentally inoculated with BLV became persistently infected, as demonstrated by a number of tests. All BLV-inoculated rabbits developed persistent serum antibody to BLV.

UNLABELLED: Recombination in RNA viruses contributes to virus evolution and rapid emergence of new viral variants that helps evade host's antiviral strategies. Host factors play important but poorly characterized roles in viral RNA recombination. The authors expressed Legionella bacterium effector proteins and SARS-CoV-2 and human metapneumovirus (HMPV) proteins in yeast to test their effects on tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV) RNA recombination. The identified 16 Legionella effectors, six SARS-CoV-2, and two HMPV proteins affecting TBSV recombination likely target shared host factors with TBSV

Between April 2013 and April 2015, seven flocks belonging to three different major commercial egg producers inCalifornia experienced a mild increase in mortality 2 to 3 wk after administration of Salmonella Enteritidis bacterins. Strains of chickens involved were H&N (flock A1, A2, B2, C1, C2, and C3) and Lohmann white (flock B1). Vaccination was administered individually through injection either in the breast muscles or subcutis in the legs between 11 and 18 wk of age in all flocks. Clinical signs ranged from inapparent to lameness, reluctance to walk, greenish diarrhea, and retching-like sym
