The influence of sex steroid hormones on gingiva of women.

Steroid sex hormones have a significant effect on different organ systems. As far as gingiva are concerned, they can influence the cellular proliferation, differentiation and growth of keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Estrogen is mainly responsible for alterations in blood vessels and progesterone stimulates the production of inflammatory mediators. In addition, some micro-organisms found in the human mouth synthesize enzymes needed for steroid synthesis and catabolism. In women, during puberty, ovulation and pregnancy, there is an increase in the production of sex steroid hormones which results

Clinical dimensions of the supraosseous gingivae in healthy periodontium.

BACKGROUND: To estimate the amount of supraosseous gingivae (SOG), the soft tissue height from the bone crest to the free gingival margin, that will reform after crown-lengthening surgery, dental professionals have relied on a histologic mean dimension of 3 mm. This figure was derived from an autopsy study, and it represents the average of a significant range of values, from 0.0 to 6.5 mm. Other studies provided information on SOG dimensions; however, it seems that no clinical study in individuals without a history of periodontitis or attachment loss has been made that included all tooth types

Necrotizing gingivitis of Kaposi sarcoma affected gingivae.

Necrotizing gingivitis and oral Kaposi sarcoma are common concomitants of HIV infection and both are regarded as indicators of HIV infection. Their simultaneous appearance in an HIV seropositive subject therefore, should be relatively common; but other reports documenting such cases could not be found. This article documents an uncommon case of necrotizing gingivitis superimposed on Kaposi sarcoma-affected gingiva, occurring in a patient with chronic periodontitis. The nature of necrotizing gingivitis and Kaposi sarcoma and the possible differential diagnosis of the periodontal attachment loss

Epithelioid sarcoma metastasis to the gingivae: a case report.

We present a rare case of oral metastatic epithelioid sarcoma rapidly growing over the mandibular gingivae; the primary lesion occurred on the wrist and was treated 18 months earlier by surgery and radiotherapy. The oral metastatic lesion was resected and controlled by chemotherapy. This case has been followed for 2 years with good control of the resected oral metastatic lesion. Histologically, round to oval-shaped tumour cells with abundant eosinophylic globular cytoplasm and eccentrically localized nuclei, lack of epithelial features by electron microscopic study, and the immunohistochemical

[Leiomyosarcoma of the gingiva. Apropos of a case. Review of the literature].

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) accounts for 7% of all smooth tissue sarcomas. The rarity of smooth muscle cells in the oral cavity makes LMS a rare tumor in this localization. We report a case of gingival LMS in a 43-year-old woman. We reviewed 23 cases of LMS or the oral cavity report in the literature since 1980. Age of occurrence varied from 2.5 to 63 years with a predominance in the 20 to 30 years age range. In two-thirds of the cases, the first symptom was the development of a painful mass. In half the mass developed in the maxilla and in one-quarter it occurred in the gingival mucosa alone. In nea

Benign cartilaginous tumor of the gingiva. A case report.

Benign cartilaginous tumors of the intraoral soft tissues are rare and are typically seen in the tongue, buccal mucosa, or soft palate. They comprise a diverse group of lesions that are usually defined as cartilaginous choristomas or chondromas. The case reported was located on the palatal maxillary gingiva of the first premolar of a 56-year-old white woman. It appeared as a small firm tumor covered by normal mucosa, with the underlying bone intact on radiographic examination. Histologic examination of the excised lesion revealed a circumscribed mass of cartilaginous tissue with occasional cel

[Results of treatment of upper gingiva and palate carcinomas].

From 1981 to 1986 in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Institute of Stomatology, Medical Academy in Warsaw 85 patients were treated for carcinoma of the upper gingiva and palate. The follow-up of the patients after treatment was from 3 to 7 years. The obtained results of the treatment were analysed depending on the degree of differentiation of neoplasms and their biological aggressiveness and the therapeutic method used. It was found that the results of the treatment of upper gingiva carcinoma were not satisfactory. The best results were obtained using surgical treatment followed by rad

[Metastatic tumors of the gingiva--report of 3 cases].

Metastatic tumors to the oral region are uncommon and most are located in the mandible, with only a few in the soft tissue of the oral cavity. A review of the literature has revealed only 63 cases of a gingival soft tissue metastases. The prevalent primary site are the lung, the liver and the kidney in that decreasing order. Reported are two lung carcinomas and an esophageal carcinoma all showing a metastases to the gingival soft tissue. The primary lesions of two lung carcinomas were diagnosed after the detection of the gingival lesions. In all cases the diseases had disseminated when the gin

Biosynthesis of prostaglandins in gingiva of patients with chronic periodontitis.

This study was undertaken to determine the ability of inflamed and normal gingival tissues to synthesize prostaglandins (PGs) from the precursor arachidonic acid. Thirteen samples of inflamed human gingival tissue and six samples of normal human gingival tissue were studied. The inflammation was characterized histologically. After incubation of the tissue with [14C]arachidonate, PG metabolites were separated by thin-layer chromatography and identified by comparison with co-chromatographed standards. Inflamed gingival tissue synthesized significantly larger amounts, compared to normal tissue, o

A longitudinal evaluation of varying widths of attached gingiva.

32 patients with bilateral areas of inadequate attached gingiva on the facial surface of homologous contralateral teeth have been followed for 6 years. Treatment consisted of scaling, root planing, oral hygiene and maintenance at 3- to 6-month intervals or as needed to control inflammation. A free gingival graft was placed on one side (experimental), while the other side served as the unoperated control. Areas of inadequate attached gingiva on control sides, to include those with recession and no attached gingiva, did not demonstrate additional recession or further loss of attachment. Gingival

Resorption of connective tissue in the gingiva of the mouse incisor.

During eruption of the mouse incisor part of the periodontal ligament moves along with the tooth in occlusal direction and is degraded in the gingiva, just apically of the junctional epithelium. When studied with the electron microscope some connective tissue cells (fibroblasts) showed disorganization of both nucleus and cytoplasm. In other cells vacuoles were observed containing partly degraded cellular constituents. Sometimes within these vacuoles electron dense material with the appearance of clumped chromatin was observed. On the basis of this observation it is concluded that heterophagocy

Giant peripheral ossifying fibroma of gingiva: a diagnostic workup.

Reactive lesions of the oral cavity are non-neoplastic proliferations occurring due to chronic irritation. Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a reactive lesion usually occurring on the interdental papilla. POF is predominantly found in the second decade of life with a definitive female predilection. This is a case report of a middle-aged male patient with gingival overgrowth in left lower back tooth region. Clinically, the lesion was asymptomatic, firm, pale pink and sessile but unusually large in size. Surgical excision of the lesion was done followed by histopathological confirmation with

Identification of autonomic neuronal chains innervating gingiva and lip.

The major goals of this present study were 1) to further clarify which parasympathetic ganglion sends postganglionic fibers to the lower gingiva and lip that may be involved in the inflammatory processes besides the local factors; 2) to separately examine the central pathways regulating sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation; and 3) to examine the distribution of central premotor neurons on both sides. A retrogradely transported green fluorescent protein conjugated pseudorabies virus was injected into the lower gingiva and lip of intact and sympathectomized adult female rats. Some animals

Peripheral calcifying cystic odontogenic tumour of the maxillary gingiva.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic tumors are lesions that are derived from remnants of the components of the developing tooth germ. The calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor or calcifying odontogenic cyst is a benign cystic neoplasm of odontogenic origin that is characterized by an ameloblastoma-like epithelium and ghost cells. Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor may be centrally or peripherally located, and its ghost cells may exhibit calcification, as first described by Gorlin in 1962. Most peripheral calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors are located in the anterior gingiva of the mandible or maxilla. C

"Pyogenic granuloma - Hyperplastic lesion of the gingiva: case reports".

Pyogenic granuloma is a reactive hyperplasia of connective tissue in response to local irritants. It is a tumourlike growth of the oral cavity, frequently located surrounding the anterior teeth or skin that is considered to be neoplastic in nature. It usually arises in response to various stimuli such as low-grade local irritation, traumatic injury, hormonal factors, or certain kinds of drugs. Histologically, the surface epithelium may be intact, or may show foci of ulcerations or even exhibiting hyperkeratosis. It overlies a mass of dense connective tissue composed of significant amounts of m

Closing diastemas and creating artificial gingiva with polymer ceramics.

A 40-year-old male patient elected orthodontic correction of his crowded anterior teeth, leaving multiple root exposures and spacing in the papilla areas. Connective tissue surgery did not satisfy the patient's expectations and led him to seek alternative treatments. An innovative technique was developed to achieve root coverage and fill-in spaces in the papilla areas. This noninvasive technique used a polymer ceramic material that was bonded to the crown and root surface of the individual teeth. The veneer restorations were inserted on the teeth as a solid unit, then separated into individual
