Primary gingival enlargement as a diagnostic indicator in acute myelomonocytic leukemia. A case report.

A 25-YEAR-OLD CHINESE FEMALE, five months pregnant, came to our dental clinic with a chief complaint of slight gingival inflammation. A diagnosis of pregnancy gingivitis was made. One week later, there was a sudden onset of extremely generalized gingival enlargement and very high WBC count (144,000/cmm) was noted. Physical, laboratory, and microscopic examination led to the diagnosis of acute myelomonocytic leukemia. The observations of good oral hygiene and clinical course suggested that leukemic cell infiltration was the major cause of sudden onset of gingival enlargement. This article empha

The diagnostic challenge of juvenile hyaline fibromatosis, a case report with literature reviews.

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis (JHF) is a rare genetic condition characterized by impaired collagen production or metabolism. This study aims to present a rare case of JHF. CASE REPORT: An 11-year-old boy presented with bilateral keloid-like lesions on his ears and admitted intermittent reappearance of such lesions since he was seven. He was born to second-degree relative consanguineous parents. Physical examination revealed bilateral soft pink masses on the ears, multiple scars on the scalp, severe gingival hypertrophy, multiple small soft white papules on the anterior neck, bro

Zimmermann-Laband syndrome in monozygotic twins with a mild neurobehavioral phenotype lacking gingival overgrowth-A case report of a novel KCNN3 gene variant.

Zimmermann-Laband syndrome is a rare, heterogeneous disorder characterized by gingival hypertrophy or fibromatosis, aplastic/hypoplastic nails, hypoplasia of the distal phalanges, hypertrichosis, various degrees of intellectual disability, and distinctive facial features. Three genes are considered causative for ZLS: KCNH1, KCNN3, and ATP6V1B2. We report on a pair of female concordant monozygotic twins, both carrying a novel pathogenic variant in the KCNN3 gene, identified using exome sequencing. Only six ZLS patients with the KCNN3 pathogenic variant have been reported so far. The twins show

A rare case report of Sturge-Weber syndrome type 2 variant on Roach scale.

A facial birthmark known as a port-wine stain, neurological symptoms like seizures, hemiparesis, intellectual disability, and learning difficulties, and ocular abnormalities like glaucoma, choroidal haemangiomas, or heterochromia of irides are all associated with Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS), a rare vascular disorder. We report a novel case of SWS in a 19-year-old woman who had an unusual presentation of the type 2 Roach variation of SWS, characterized by gingival hypertrophy and typical port-wine staining of the face, bilaterally, without any other symptoms.

Comparative Evaluation of the Effects of Adenotonsillar Hypertrophy on Oral Health in Children.

We aimed to investigate the oral health of children in terms of the presence of dental caries, periodontal health, halitosis, and dentofacial changes in patients who had adenotonsillar hypertrophy related to mouth breathing and compared these findings with nasal breathing healthy and adenotonsillectomy-operated children. The patient group comprised 40 mouth-breathing children who were diagnosed with adenotonsillar hypertrophy, while the control group consisted of 40 nasal breathing children who had no adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Forty children who had undergone an adenotonsillectomy operation

Cyclosporine A-induced neck fibrosis in a patient with adult-onset Still's disease.

Cyclosporine A (CsA) is an immunosuppressive agent used for the prevention of graft rejection during organ and bone marrow transplantation. CsA is also used for the treatment of various inflammatory rheumatic diseases. Although different side effect profiles have been reported, nephrotoxicity, renal vascular damage, hypertension, and gingival hypertrophy are among the most commonly encountered side effects. The development of massive fibrosis in the neck associated with CsA in a 30-year-old male patient with Still's disease is presented herein. Significant regression was observed after the dis

Atypical Presentation of Lip Nodules in Clinically Diagnosed Juvenile Hyaline Fibromatosis.

Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis (JHF) is a rare, hereditary disease characterized by abnormal hyaline deposits within the skin, soft tissues, joints, and bones. The condition itself is often debilitating, with no curative treatment available. A definitive diagnosis is established by genetic testing. However, the hallmarks of gingival hypertrophy, subcutaneous scalp nodules, and joint contractures can be used as a clinical guide when genetic testing is unavailable. Here, we report an unusual case of a five-year-old child clinically diagnosed with juvenile hyaline fibromatosis with atypical nodule

A novel splice site mutation in ANTXR2 (CMG2) gene results in systemic hyalinosis.

Systemic hyalinosis is a rare autosomal recessive inheritance disease characterized by accumulation of amorphous, unidentified hyaline material in skin and other organs, which leads to papulonodular skin lesions, gingival hypertrophy, flexion contractures of the joints, and large subcutaneous tumors. It is composed of 2 allelic syndromes, infantile systemic hyalinosis and juvenile hyaline fibromatosis. Here we describe a patient with juvenile hyaline fibromatosis confirmed by clinical and histopathologic findings, and genetic analysis, which revealed a novel homozygous splice site mutation IVS

Anesthetic Management of an Adult Patient With Hyaline Fibromatosis Syndrome Undergoing Laparoscopic Colectomy: A Case Report.

Hyaline fibromatosis syndrome (HFS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hyaline fibrous depositions in the skin and internal organs. Contractured joints and gingival hypertrophy make airway management difficult in patients with HFS, while trunk deformities complicate surgical positioning. A 56-year-old woman with HFS underwent laparoscopic colectomy for sigmoid colon cancer. Her airway was secured by awake fiberoptic intubation, and general anesthesia was maintained uneventfully. This report discusses the oldest reported patient with HFS and is the first to describe the man

Atypical streptococcal infection of gingiva associated with chronic mouth breathing.

Streptococcal infections of oral tissues are mainly seen in young children who experience a variety of upper respiratory tract infections. The disease is characterized by fever, lymphadenopathy, and ulcers on the gingiva, lips, and tonsils. This case report presents an atypical streptococcal infection of the gingiva in an 18-year-old man. The patient was referred to the periodontology department complaining of a 2-month history of gingival enlargement. He had persistent fever (39.5 degrees C) and general malaise for 2 weeks. Intraoral examination revealed extremely inflamed and enlarged gingiv

Cutaneous and oral lesions in 32 children after renal transplantation.

A variety of skin and oral mucosal lesions appearing in patients after renal transplantation have been reported in the literature. Because most of these data pertain to adults, we studied a group of children with kidney transplants to investigate the occurrence of skin and/or oral mucosal lesions, compare them with those observed in adults, and contribute to the knowledge of the pathogenesis of these disorders. Our series consisted of 32 patients aged 5 to 18 years, all of whom had skin and/or oral mucosal lesions that were classified as being either drug induced, probably related to uremia, o

Generalized gingival enlargement due to accumulation of amyloid-like material.

Hyaline or amyloid-like substances may be seen in several oral lesions. Some of these originate from epithelial cells and some from connective tissue components. In this study, amyloid-like material causing gingival enlargement in three patients, with eyelid involvement in two, was examined using histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. These accumulations did not share the classical features of amyloid such as green birefringence under polarized light after Congo red staining. Our findings suggest that epithelial degeneration plays an important role in the pathogenesis of

Hypertrichosis lanuginosa in a mother and son.

Hypertrichosis lanuginosa (without gingival hyperplasia) is described in a mother and son; the latter also had photophobia, infantile genitalia, growth retardation, hypotension, low IQ and dental abnormalities (hyperdontia, permanence of deciduous and delayed eruption of permanent teeth). Both have normal dermatoglyphics. Some clinical findings are discussed. The presence of this syndrome in a mother and son supports an autosomal mode of inheritance (with variable expressivity). Hypertrichosis lanuginosa is a pure monomultidysplasia and may be classified with the tricho-odontic sub-group of th

Vitamin C Deficiency as a Risk Factor for Bell's Palsy: A New Association.

A 28-year-old female developed gum hypertrophy after five months of Bell's palsy (BP). The vitamin C level was severely low. After vitamin C supplementation for one month, gingival hypertrophy was completely resolved. Facial deviation also improved following rehabilitation. Vitamin C is commonly considered as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulator, and it hastens recovery of neuritis caused by herpes (cause of BP). BP too has an immune-inflammatory background. To the best of our knowledge, for the first time, vitamin C deficiency has been reported as a cause or triggering/risk

[A study on erythrocyte-membrane osmotic resistance and periodontal changes in rats treated with carbon tetrachloride].

The objective of this study is to find correlation between erythrocyte-membrane osmotic resistance and periodontal changes. The hepatic function, chemical blood findings, and gingival changes including color, flow of gingival fluid, and local histological changes were studied in rats that had been treated with carbon tetrachloride. Results 1. Rats treated with carbon tetrachloride showed such changes in internal conditions as the following: mild inflammatory alterations, tendency to anemia, severe liver-cell injury, and liver dysfunction. 2. These changes affected the findings of erythrocyte-m

Ichthyosis follicularis in two girls: an autosomal dominant disorder.

Ichthyosis follicularis (IF) is a rare disorder of keratinization that has been described primarily in males and proposed as a possible X-linked disorder. We report two black girls with nonscarring alopecia; photophobia; follicular hyperkeratoses; hyperkeratosis of the extensor aspects of the hands, knees, and elbows; fixed, erythematous, perineal plaques; and angular cheilitis who seem to fit the clinical criteria for IF. One girl also had gingival hypertrophy and a hearing deficit. One child's father had identical symptoms. We propose that these girls may have a variant of IF that is inherit
