A retrospective analysis of reactive hyperplastic lesions of the oral cavity: study of 1149 cases diagnosed between 2000 and 2011, Chile.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to determine the relative frequency and distribution of reactive hyperplastic lesions (RHL) of the oral mucosa at the Oral Pathology Institute of the School of Dentistry at the University of Chile. This was a retrospective study of 1149 biopsies with histopathological diagnosis of RHL, performed between 2000 and 2011. The RHL were classified in 4 groups: fibrous hyperplasia (FH), pyogenic granuloma (PG), peripheral giant-cell granuloma (PGCG) and peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF). RESULTS: the most frequent RHL was FH (71. 1%), followed by PG (21.1%), PG

Peripheral fibroma obstructing the eruption pathway.

Reactive hyperplasias comprise a group of fibrous connective tissue lesions that commonly occur in oral mucosa secondary to injury. Peripheral fibroma is also a type of reactive hyperplasia. Peripheral fibroma is a reactive hyperplastic mass that occurs on the gingiva and is derived from connective tissue of the submucosa or periodontal ligament. It may occur at any age, although it does have a predilection for young adults. Females develop these lesions more commonly than do males. Here, we are presenting a case report of a child who is 6 years old and presented to us with a swelling in the l

Focal dermal hypoplasia. Current concepts and differential diagnosis.

Focal dermal hypoplasia syndrome (FDH) is a congenital disorder of mesodermal derivation with some ectodermal participation. The disorder, first described in 1962, is characterized by tenacious defects consisting of thinning of the skin; herniations of adipose tissue; abnormal skin pigmentation and other skeletal, dental, ocular, hair, and nail abnormalities. A rare instance of focal dermal hypoplasia syndrome is reported as characterized by papillary gingival hyperplasia. Differential diagnostic guidelines that separate focal dermal hypoplasia from a host of other skin and mucous membrane dis

[Diffuse gingival plasmacytoma. Apropos of an case with an immunofluorescence and electron microscopy study].

A 5.1/2-year-old girl presented with an isolated diffuse gingival hypertrophy and an abnormal mobility of teeth (alveolysis on roentgenograms). The diagnosis of a plasmacytoma was suspected after pathological and immunohistological examinations of a gingival biopsy. Plasma cells were secreting monoclonal immunoglobulins (heavy chain IgA and light chain lambda), quite different from polyclonal secretions of a reactive plasmacytosis. The electron microscopic study demonstrated polymorphic plasma cells (well-differentiated, dysplastic or undifferentiated cells). The isolated nature of this tumor

Peripheral fibroma/fibrous epulis with and without calcifications. A clinical evaluation of 204 cases in Singapore.

Peripheral fibroma/fibrous epulis accounts for the great majority of localised gingival swellings as was substantiated by various reports in the literature. A study was undertaken to investigate the clinical features of a series of 204 localised fibrous gingival swellings received by the Histopathology Laboratory, Department of Oral Surgery, National University of Singapore. The female patients were more affected than the male patients and the lesions occurred predominantly among the Chinese. The lesions were mainly pedunculated and most commonly occurred in anterior maxilla. The recurrence ra

Diagnosis and management of focal reactive overgrowths of gingiva--a case series.

Localized overgrowths of gingiva such as peripheral fibroma, peripheral ossifying/cementifying fibroma, pyogenic granuloma and peripheral giant cell granuloma belong to a common group of lesions designated as focal reactive overgrowths (FROG). These growths are reactive in nature. They occur in response to chronic, low grade irritation caused by plaque or any other irritant. Etiology, clinical features and treatment modes of these lesions are the same with slight variations. The present case series describes five different cases of FROG where the lesions were treated by surgical excision under

Complications, Morbidity, and Rehabilitation After Treatment of Gingivobuccal Cancers.

Gingivobuccal malignancies involve structures essential for speech, swallowing, and facial contour. The management of these cancers requires a multidisciplinary approach, which is often associated with significant morbidities. The most concerning complications are trismus, osteoradionecrosis, oral incompetence, hardware-related complications and xerostomia, all of which can profoundly impair the quality of life. Recent surgical and radiation technique advancements, along with consistent implementation of rehabilitative protocols, have improved outcomes leading to better quality of life. This a

Ossifying fibroma: the peripheral variant.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a solitary gingival growth thought to arise from the gingiva, periosteum or the periodontal ligament. It is a slow-growing, benign, progressive lesion that is limited in size. CASE DESCRIPTION: This article describes a case of ossifying fibroma of a peripheral variant that occurred in a 26-year-old female in the anterior region of the lower jaw and presented as a growth on the gingiva. Since it was difficult to diagnose clinically, a pathological evaluation was mandatory. Upon pathological confirmation of the diagnosis, the lesion was surgic

Benign cartilaginous tumor of the gingiva. A case report.

Benign cartilaginous tumors of the intraoral soft tissues are rare and are typically seen in the tongue, buccal mucosa, or soft palate. They comprise a diverse group of lesions that are usually defined as cartilaginous choristomas or chondromas. The case reported was located on the palatal maxillary gingiva of the first premolar of a 56-year-old white woman. It appeared as a small firm tumor covered by normal mucosa, with the underlying bone intact on radiographic examination. Histologic examination of the excised lesion revealed a circumscribed mass of cartilaginous tissue with occasional cel

Oral manifestations of neurofibromatosis type 1 in children with facial plexiform neurofibroma: report of three cases.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common autosomal genetic disorder with a prevalence of 1 in 3,000 births. NF1 is a complex syndrome characterized by many abnormalities and may affect all organ systems. Oral manifestations of NF1 occur frequently, but reports including NF1 children with facial plexiform neurofibromas and oral alterations are scant. Facial plexiform neurofibroma may cause asymmetry, disfigurement and usually arises from the trigeminal nerve. The aim of this paper is to to report three pediatric NF1 cases with facial plexiform neurofibroma presenting with oral manifestations,

First Description of Oral Microbiota in Domestic Cats Affected by Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts for the majority of feline oral neoplasms and carries a poor prognosis; however, the oral microbiome in affected cats remains poorly characterized. This study aimed to preliminarily describe the oral bacterial communities of cats with OSCC and compare them with those of clinically healthy cats using DNA amplicon sequencing. Oral swabs were collected from cats with OSCC, including tumor surfaces, tumor cut surfaces, and clinically normal mucosa distant from the tumor (n = 20 total samples), and from the gingival margin of healthy cats (n = 12). DNA w

Periodontal diseases and risk of oral cancer in Southern India: Results from the HeNCe Life study.

Some studies suggest that periodontal diseases increase the risk of oral cancer, but contradictory results also exist. Inadequate control of confounders, including life course exposures, may have influenced prior findings. We estimate the extent to which high levels of periodontal diseases, measured by gingival inflammation and recession, are associated with oral cancer risk using a comprehensive subset of potential confounders and applying a stringent adjustment approach. In a hospital-based case-control study, incident oral cancer cases (N = 350) were recruited from two major referral hospit

Peripheral cementifying fibroma: a clinical diagnostic dilemma.

The peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a reactive gingival overgrowth occurring frequently in the anterior maxilla. It originates in the cells of the periodontal ligament and is more common in children and young adults. In the current article a case of gingival over growth, which was thought to be puberty-induced gingivitis was seen in the lower anterior maxillary gingiva. Histology of the excised tissue showed cellular, fibrous connective tissue stroma with calcified osseous calcifications indicative of POF. The definitive diagnosis is established only by histological examination, which re

Peripheral ameloblastoma: a case report.

Peripheral ameloblastoma is an uncommon pathological variant of the more usual intraosseous central ameloblastoma. It most typically presents as a localized soft tissue mass occurring in the tooth-bearing areas of the jaws and is often provisionally diagnosed as an epulis. In this paper, a 43-year-old male presented with a three-year history of a painful, slowly enlarging gingival swelling. There was no evidence of bony involvement on radiographs but it was revealed histologically to be a peripheral ameloblastoma. Treatment was by wide local excision, including a bony margin, and primary closu

Peripheral giant cell granuloma: a potentially aggressive lesion in children.

A slowly enlarging gingival mass with a reddish-purple surface is observed in a school-age boy. The lesion was first noted 3 months ago during a routine oral examination but recently it has increased in size and interferes with eating. A periapical radiograph demonstrated focal loss of the alveolar crestal bone in the mandibular incisor region. The diagnosis of peripheral giant cell granuloma, a benign reactive gingival lesion, is confirmed by histopathologic examination. Early detection and excision of this hyperplastic nodule is important to minimize potential dentoalveolar complications.

An unusual vascular hamartoma on the gingiva of an 11-year-old boy.

A case is reported of an unusual vascular lesion on the gingiva of an 11-year-old boy which clinically and histopathologically did not fit well into any current classification of vascular lesions. The lesion presented as a firm nodular swelling of the buccal and lingual gingiva which had been present for 9 years. The term endovascular papillary haemangioma is suggested. Histopathologically it had features in common with a number of benign vascular lesions, as well as with some more sinister locally-aggressive vascular tumours and angiosarcomas. It is stressed that, although some of these lesio
