In cases where malocclusion is associated with intrinsic discoloration and/or discrepancies in tooth size and shape, such as peg-shaped laterals, orthodontics alone may not improve the aesthetics. In these situations, veneers may be considered as an adjunct to orthodontic treatment to improve the overall aesthetics. The aim of this study is to report a clinical case where an uneven occlusal plane was corrected, and the positioning of gingival zeniths, color, shape, and size of the dental elements involved were improved by means of gingivectomy and rehabilitation with 10 ceramic laminate veneer

This article highlights a peculiar case of Crohn's disease (CD) with the primary presenting symptom as localized gingival overgrowth in the anterior region of maxilla. The patient underwent surgical treatment with external bevel gingivectomy procedure. Follow-up after 6 months revealed no recurrence. A final diagnosis of CD was made, after following histopathological evaluation of the gingival biopsy and other special investigations. It is thus crucial to associate the localized granulomatous gingival overgrowth to systemic signs of CD. Intraoral occurrence preceding intestinal involvement is

The granular enlargement of the gingiva may be the first clinical manifestation of Orofacial granulomatosis, preceding other local or systemic manifestations. The term Idiopathic Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) refers to conditions restricted to the oral region without any identifiable systemic granulomatous diseases. We report a case of nine year old female patient with gingival enlargement as the sole manifestation without any systemic involvement. Laboratory investigations were done to rule out tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, allergic hypersensitivity, Crohn's disease. The patient was treated by

Drug-induced gingival overgrowth is an iatrogenic disease caused by the use of phenytoin, cyclosporine, nifedipine, and other medications in the susceptible patient. The gingival overgrowth can be due to three causes: noninflammatory, hyperplastic reaction to the medication; chronic inflammatory hyperplasia; or a combined enlargement due to chronic inflammation and drug-induced hyperplasia. Drug-induced gingival enlargement can be minimized, but not prevented, by elimination of local irritants, meticulous oral hygiene, and regular periodontal recall. If gingival enlargement interferes with fun

Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis (IGF), a rare fibroproliferative disease of unknown etiology, affects gingival tissue and has substantial adverse effects on patients. Therefore, the pathogenesis of IGF requires more extensive and in-depth research. In this case, a patient with confirmed IGF underwent initial nonsurgical periodontal therapy and gingivectomy, and the prognosis was good. The patient had no loss of periodontal attachment but had a history of swelling and bleeding of the gingiva prior to fibrous enlargement, which prompted further investigation. We explored the patient's subgingiv

BACKGROUND: Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a group of hereditary conditions that primarily involves the defective formation and/or calcification of enamel. The association of AI with gingival enlargement-like lesions has also been reported.
METHODS: This paper reports a case of a hypoplastic AI associated with unusual generalized gingival hyperplasia.
RESULTS: Histological aspect of the gingival growth was characterized by a dense connective tissue with a mild mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate, calcified bodies, and islands of odontogenic epithelium.
CONCLUSION: The present case represen

Gingival enlargement (GE) is characterized by the overgrowth of gingival tissues, often exacerbated by dental biofilm and certain medications or substances. This report presents a case of severe GE in a 61-year-old male with generalized stage 4, grade C periodontitis linked to methamphetamine use, which the patient disclosed occurred during a period of homelessness. The treatment involved antibiotic therapy, extractions, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, and osteoplasty to facilitate future oral rehabilitation. After treatment, the patient reported no pain and improved eating habits, significantly

Very few people have seen transmigrant mandibular canines and little has been presented in the literature about this rare phenomenon. In this case report, identification techniques and treatment options are presented along with the treatment results of a patient diagnosed with a transmigrant mandibular canine. This rare condition usually requires extraction of the involved tooth because orthodontic forces are seldom successful at erupting these teeth into their proper location. The treatment protocol for this patient involved a combination of orthodontic procedures, surgical extractions, gingi

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a sporadic disorder and is frequent among the neurocutaneous syndromes specifically with vascular predominance. This syndrome consists of constellation of clinical features like facial nevus, seizures, hemiparesis, intracranial calcifications, and mental retardation. It is characterized by focal port-wine stain, ocular abnormalities (glaucoma), and choroidal hemangioma and leptomeningeal angioma most often involving occipital and parietal lobes. The present paper reports three cases of SWS with oral manifestations and periodontal management, which included thorou

Excess tissue often exists distal to the upper second molar, creating a pocket in the maxillary tuberosity. When removed from this location, this tissue can serve as an optimal piece of connective tissue (CT), helping to both prevent periodontal disease and treat periodontal recession while also aiding in restorative dentistry. This tissue is an ideal CT for root coverage and soft-tissue ridge-augmentation grafting. This article provides an overview of CT grafting, including a discussion of tuberosity CT and its advantages versus palatal CT. The authors describe two techniques for harvesting t

Gingival fibromatosis, short stature, border-line IQ, facial dysmorphism and hepatomegaly: Gingival fibromatosis is a rare and benign disorder. The enlarged gingivae are firm and may interfere with speech, closure of the lips, and mastication. We report a thirteen years old girl, with gingival fibromatosis referred to the periodontics clinics. Full mouth gingivectomy and gingivoplasty were performed. Medical investigation showed short stature, low-borderline IQ, facial dysmorphism, and hepatomegaly. Histological analysis revealed hyperplasia in the epithelial area and fibrotic appearance of gi

The reformation of basement membrane antigens was examined during healing following gingivectomy procedures. Three antigens, Type IV collagen, bullous pemphigoid antigen and epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) antigen, were identified by indirect immunofluorescent tests. While all three antigens could be identified in the healing wound within 2 days, the antigens regenerated at different rates. The bullous pemphigoid antigen reformed the earliest and extended furthest along the healing front of epithelium. The Type IV collagen reformed at an intermediate rate and the EBA antigen formed the s

Gingiva is an important part of a smile, and it is considered the most frequently pigmented tissue in the oral cavity. Although gingival pigmentation is physiologic in most cases, it is one of the common causes of esthetic concerns in patients with gummy smiles. Hence, the demand for cosmetic therapy of gingival melanin pigmentation has become common. Numerous procedures have been suggested to treat this problem, such as gingivectomy, free gingival grafts, cryosurgery, electrosurgery, laser therapy, etc. Here we report a case of gingival hyperpigmentation using liquid nitrogen cryosurgery. The

Oral telangiectatic granuloma is a benign hyperplastic lesion occurring in response to trauma or chronic irritation in the oral cavity. The characteristic histological appearance comprises of typical granulation tissue with a proliferation of small thin-walled blood vessels in the loose connective tissue. We describe a case of a 36-year-old female who had a swelling in the left maxillary region which was associated with the intrabony defect. An internal bevel gingivectomy was performed, and the histopathological report was suggestive of telangiectatic granuloma. The intrabony defect was manage

Lip repositioning surgery to address excessive gingival display induced by different etiologies has received major attention recently. Several techniques and variations have been reported, including myotomy or repositioning of the levator labii superioris muscle, Le Fort impaction, maxillary gingivectomies, botulinum toxin injections, and lip stabilization. This study reports a case of excessive gingival display treated by a modified combined approach. A 25-year-old woman with a 4- to 8-mm gingival display when smiling caused by a combination of short clinical crowns induced by an altered pass

Two nonconsanguineous patients affected by I-cell disease (mucolipidosis II) are reported. I-cell disease, an oligosaccharidosis, is characterized by severe psychomotor retardation, marked shortness of stature, coarse facies, gingival enlargement, generalized bone demineralization, periosteal cloaking of long bones visible in early infancy, a rapid deteriorating course, and death from heart failure or bronchopneumonia, usually by the age of 5 years. This disorder is the result of a deficiency of glycoprotein N-acetylglucosaminylphosphotransferase activity, necessary for proper intracellular pr

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare gingival lesion that presents as localized or generalized enlargement of the attached gingiva. The gingiva is characterized as pink, firm, and very fibrous, with little tendency to bleed. HGF can present as an isolated feature or as part of a syndrome. Recent findings report a defect in the Son of sevenless-1 gene on chromosome 2p21-p22 (HGF1) as a possible cause of this clinical presentation. HGF inheritance is transmitted through both autosomal dominant and recessive modes. While clinicians disagree on the modalities and timing of treatment fo

Generalized gingival enlargement can be caused by a variety of etiological factors. It can be inherited (hereditary gingival fibromatosis [HGF]); associated with other diseases characterizing a syndrome; or induced as a side effect of systemic drugs, such as phenytoin, cyclosporin, or nifedipine. HGF, previously known as elephantiasis gingivae, hereditary gingival hyperplasia, and hypertrophic gingiva, is a genetic disorder characterized by a progressive enlargement of the gingiva. This review will focus on diagnosis, treatment, and control of HGF. The pattern of inheritance, the histopatholog
