A genome survey sequencing of the Java mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus) adds new aspects to the evolution of lineage specific retrotransposons in Ruminantia (Cetartiodactyla).

Ruminantia, the ruminating, hoofed mammals (cow, deer, giraffe and allies) are an unranked artiodactylan clade. Around 50-60 million years ago the BovB retrotransposon entered the ancestral ruminantian genome through horizontal gene transfer. A survey genome screen using 454-pyrosequencing of the Java mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus) and the lesser kudu (Tragelaphus imberbis) was done to investigate and to compare the landscape of transposable elements within Ruminantia. The family Tragulidae (mouse deer) is the only representative of Tragulina and phylogenetically important, because it represe

The host status of African buffaloes, Syncerus caffer, for Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) decoloratus.

The objective of this study was to assess the host status of African buffaloes, Syncerus caffer, for the one-host tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) decoloratus. To this end the R. (B.) decoloratus burdens of ten buffaloes examined in three north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal Province (KZN) nature reserves were compared with those of medium-sized to large antelope species in these reserves and in the southern Kruger National Park (KNP), Mpumalanga Province. The R. (B.) decoloratus burdens of the buffaloes were considerably smaller than those of the antelopes in the KNP, but not those in the KZN reserves.

From mice to rhinos: Whole-organ quantification of 3D mammalian placental structure using correlative multiscale imaging.

The mammalian placenta displays extraordinary structural diversity across scales of measurement, yet the quantitative basis and functional consequences of this variation remain poorly understood. Traditional approaches rely on qualitative categories or simple metrics such as length or depth which obscure the complexity of three-dimensional (3D) tissue architecture. Here, we review methods for quantifying whole-organ placental volume, surface area, and vascular organisation, highlighting trade-offs between speed, expense, labour, precision, scalability, destructivity, and specificity. We then d

Prevalence of antibodies against Rift Valley fever virus in Kenyan wildlife.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an arbovirus associated with periodic outbreaks, mostly on the African continent, of febrile disease accompanied by abortion in livestock, and a severe, fatal haemorrhagic syndrome in humans. However, the maintenance of the virus during the inter-epidemic period (IEP) when there is low or no disease activity detected in livestock or humans has not been determined. This study report prevalence of RVFV-neutralizing antibodies in sera (n=896) collected from 16 Kenyan wildlife species including at least 35% that were born during the 1999-2006 IEP. Specimens from s

Bowman's layer in the cornea- structure and function and regeneration.

Bowman's layer lies immediately posterior to the epithelial basement membrane (EBM) and anterior to the stroma proper in humans, chickens, quail, zebra fish, deer, giraffe, antelope, California sea lions, guinea pig and several other species. It is not found in dog, wolf, cat, tiger, lions, rabbit, pigs, cows, goats, or horses. Developmental anomalies of Bowman's layer are rare, but acquired damage to Bowman's layer, or even complete destruction, is frequently seen in advanced bullous keratopathy or Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy. No detrimental effects of removal of Bowman's layer over the cent

Are we prepared for emerging and re-emerging diseases? Experience and lessons from epidemics that occurred in Tanzania during the last five decades.

This paper reviews preparedness for containing and controlling emerging and re-emerging diseases drawing lessons from disease events that occurred in animal and human populations in the last five decades (1961-2011). A comprehensive analysis based on retrieval and analysis of grey and published literature as well as reported cases was carried out to document type and trend of occurrence of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in different parts of Tanzania. Overall, the majority of diseases reported in the country were viral in nature followed by bacterial diseases. The trend for the o

Parasites and blood-meal hosts of the tsetse fly in Tanzania: a metagenomics study.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies can transmit various Trypanosoma spp. that cause trypanosomiasis in humans, wild animals, and domestic animals. Amplicon deep sequencing of the 12S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene can be used to detect mammalian tsetse hosts, and the 18S rRNA gene can be used to detect all associated eukaryotic pathogens, including Trypanosoma spp. METHODS: Tsetse flies were collected from the Serengeti National Park (n = 48), Maswa Game Reserve (n = 42), and Tarangire National Park (n = 49) in Tanzania in 2012-13. Amplicon deep sequencing targeting mammal-specific 12S rRNA and 18S rRNA gen

Scaling contact force parameters across body size, limb count, and number of contact spheres.

Dynamic simulations of contact interactions involve a trade-off between realism and numerical performance. Contact interactions in musculoskeletal simulations are often modelled using Hertz theory applied to contact spheres, with Hunt-Crossley based dissipation. Suitable contact parameters are highly dependent on the morphology, scale, materials, and movement in question. Inappropriate parameter choices can manifest in unpredictable ways, potentially resulting in misinterpretations or failed simulations. Here, I demonstrate that the plane strain modulus and dissipation parameters are not scale

Brain virome dysbiosis in Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy.

Viral elements have been reported in human brain tissue, yet their presence in the putamen-a region critically affected in Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA)has not been characterized. We analyzed whole-genome sequencing data from 32 post-mortem putamen samples (PD: n = 10; MSA: n = 10; healthy controls: n = 12) available under NCBI BioProjects PRJNA756274, PRJNA563007, PRJNA321439, PRJNA555211, and PRJNA555099. Using MetaPhlAn4 for virome profiling, LEfSe for biomarker discovery, and Wilcoxon and ROC analyses for validation, we found that neurodegenerative samples exhi

Molecular identification of bloodmeal sources and trypanosomes in Glossina spp., Tabanus spp. and Stomoxys spp. trapped on cattle farm settlements in southwest Nigeria.

The interactions of host, vector and parasite in bovine trypanosomiasis transmission cycles in southwest Nigeria are not yet well understood. Trypanosoma (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae) species infection prevalences and bloodmeal sources were determined in transmitting vectors of the genera Glossina (Diptera: Glossinidae), Tabanus (Diptera: Tabanidae) and Stomoxys (Diptera: Muscidae) collected using Nzi traps in cattle settlements in southwest Nigeria. Sequenced cytochrome B mitochondrial DNA segments obtained from vector digestive tracts identified bloodmeal sources from eight host specie

The evolution of interferon-tau.

Thirty years ago, a novel type I interferon (IFN) was identified by molecular cloning of cDNA libraries constructed from RNA extracted from ovine and bovine pre-implantation embryos. This protein was eventually designated as IFN-tau (IFNT) to highlight its trophoblast-dependent expression. IFNT function is not immune related. Instead, it interacts with the maternal system to initiate the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy. This activity is indispensable for the continuation of pregnancy. Our review will describe how IFNT evolved from other type I IFNs to function in this new capacity.

Teasing apart tangrams: testing hippocampal pattern separation with a collaborative referencing paradigm.

The hippocampus and the medial temporal lobe cortex [medial temporal lobe cortices (MTLC)] both contribute to long-term memory. Although their contributions are thought to be dissociable, the nature of the representations that each region supports remains unclear. The Complementary Learning Systems (CLS) modeling approach suggests that hippocampus represents overlapping information in a sparser and therefore more separated fashion than MTLC. We tested this prediction using a collaborative referencing paradigm whereby hippocampal amnesic patients and a partner work together to develop and use u

Development of a Duplex TaqMan-MGB qPCR Assay for Differential Detection of Chinese Epidemic Lumpy Skin Disease Virus Strains and Goatpox Virus.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a transboundary viral disease of cattle, including Asian water buffalo and yaks, and certain wild ruminants (e.g., African buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest, eland, and Arabian oryx). It is caused by lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), a member of the genus Capripoxvirus (family Poxviridae) together with goatpox virus (GTPV) and sheeppox virus (SPPV). High nucleotide identity and serological cross-reactivity among these viruses hinder differential diagnosis. The aim of this study was to develop a Duplex TaqMan-MGB qPCR Assay for Differential Detection of Chinese Epidemic Lu

Bilateral diffuse retinal pigment epithelium proliferation induced by choroidal inflammation: A case report.

RATIONALE: Proliferation of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is typically observed in limited ocular disorders, in connection with the local mechanism of RPE proliferation-mediated wound repair. Bilateral and diffuse type RPE proliferation is considered to be associated with paraneoplastic syndromes, such as a bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation. However, other reported diseases that induce bilateral diffuse RPE proliferation are quite rare, especially for patients who are considered to have a non-malignant status. PATIENT CONCERNS: The bilateral eyes of a 47-year-old woman with

[Radiological imaging of acute infectious and non-infectious enterocolitis].

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is often used as the initial diagnostic test in patients with inflammatory and infectious types of enterocolitis. The differential diagnosis is broad, including infectious, non-infectious and vascular causes, which have substantially different management strategies. Although a definitive diagnosis often relies on endoscopic biopsy results, stool culture results or other clinical features, radiologists often help to guide the diagnosis. OBJECTIVES: This article reviews the CT appearance of different infectious and inflammatory forms of enterocolitis. Genera

Tracking the feeding patterns of tsetse flies (Glossina genus) by analysis of bloodmeals using mitochondrial cytochromes genes.

Tsetse flies are notoriously difficult to observe in nature, particularly when populations densities are low. It is therefore difficult to observe them on their hosts in nature; hence their vertebrate species can very often only be determined indirectly by analysis of their gut contents. This knowledge is a critical component of the information on which control tactics can be developed. The objective of this study was to determine the sources of tsetse bloodmeals, hence investigate their feeding preferences. We used mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 (COI) and cytochrome b (cytb) gene sequen
