Receptor-Associated Prorenin System in the Trabecular Meshwork of Patients with Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma and Neovascular Glaucoma.

The receptor-associated prorenin system (RAPS) is associated with several pathologic conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and uveitis. Here, we show the involvement of RAPS in the trabecular meshwork (TM) from patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and neovascular glaucoma (NVG) due to proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Anterior chamber (AC) levels of prorenin significantly increased in both POAG and NVG, as did those of angiotensin II in NVG alone, compared to cataract. In surgically excised TM tissues, (pro)renin receptor ((P)RR) and angiot

Electrophysiological evaluation and visual outcome in patients with central retinal vein occlusion, primary open-angle glaucoma and neovascular glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To evaluate patients with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and neovascular glaucoma (NVG) using electrophysiology in order to gain better understanding of visual outcome and risk factors, such as previously diagnosed primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS: Eighty-three patients (83 eyes) initially presenting with CRVO and examined with full-field electroretinography (ERG) within 3 months of the thrombotic event were analysed retrospectively regarding treatment, risk factors and visual outcome. In addition, 30 patients initially presenting with NVG caused by CRVO were also i

Neovascular Glaucoma Secondary to Choroidal Metastasis From Lung Adenocarcinoma: A Palliative Management Challenge.

Choroidal metastasis is the most common intraocular malignancy in adults and may present as the initial manifestation of an underlying systemic malignancy. We report a case of a 62-year-old woman who presented with unilateral progressive visual deterioration and was initially referred with a working diagnosis of ocular tuberculosis (TB). Ocular examination revealed a non-pigmented choroidal mass with exudative retinal detachment. Subsequent imaging identified a lung lesion, and a primary lung malignancy was suspected based on contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the thorax. Histopathologic

Early postoperative bevacizumab for preventing neovascular glaucoma in phacovitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

To evaluate the effectiveness of postoperative intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) in preventing neovascular glaucoma (NVG) and identify associated risk factors in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) undergoing phacovitrectomy. Patients with PDR who underwent phacovitrectomy were enrolled and categorized into two subgroups based on their postoperative treatment regimen: one group received IVB within 2 months following phacovitrectomy (Group 1); the other did not receive IVB during this period (Group 2). A comparative analysis evaluated the distinguishing characteristics of the tw

Updates in the treatment of neovascular glaucoma: From conventional approaches to novel therapies.

Neovascular glaucoma (NVG) is a severe and refractory form of secondary glaucoma characterized by the proliferation of abnormal vessels in the anterior segment, leading to a progressive rise in intraocular pressure (IOP) and optic nerve damage. It is most commonly associated with ischemic retinal conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, central retinal vein occlusion, and ocular ischemic syndrome. This review aims to provide an updated overview of the current management strategies for NVG, including recent advancements in medical, laser, and surgical treatment modalities. While anti-vascular e

Neovascular glaucoma caused by small-cell lung cancer iris metastasis: A case presentation.

Small-cell lung cancer may directly affect the eye by metastatic proliferation or indirectly by paraneoplastic syndromes. The choroid is the most common site for uveal metastasis (90%); however, the iris can be involved in a smaller proportion of cases (incidence <10%). Blurred vision, pain, redness, photophobia, glaucoma, hyphema and visual field defects can arise from this metastatic involvement. The median survival time for patients with iris metastasis is reported to be 4 months. Secondary glaucoma can be managed with topical and oral treatment, transscleral cyclophotocoagulation, laser tr

Case of Pierson syndrome presented with hyphema, vitrous haemorrhage and subsequent neovascular glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Pierson syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that causes congenital nephrotic syndrome, neurodevelopmental abnormalities, and several ocular signs. The Pierson syndrome is caused by a mutation of the LAMB2 gene, that encodes laminin beta 2, which is expressed in the glomerular basement membrane, in neuromuscular junctions, and within ocular structures. First described by Pierson et al., the ocular signs of Pierson syndrome include microcoria, which is most characteristic sign, as well as iris abnormalities, cataract, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. CASE PRESENTATION:

Neovascular glaucoma and vitreous hemorrhage following cataract surgery in patients with diabetes mellitus.

The potential complications of cataract surgery in the general population are well known. In addition, cataract extraction in the patient with diabetes mellitus is associated with other potential complications common to this disease: neovascular glaucoma and acceleration of proliferative diabetic retinopathy with or without vitreous hemorrhage. We analyzed the records of 154 patients with diabetes mellitus who had undergone standard intracapsular cataract extraction in one eye only with the other eye serving as the unoperated control eye. We were able to determine the status of the diabetic re
