Heat stress reduces stomatal numbers in Ginkgo biloba: Implications for the stomatal method of palaeo-atmospheric [CO2] reconstruction during episodes of global warming.

The stomata of fossil plants are commonly used as proxies to reconstruct palaeo-atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations (palaeo-[CO2]). Stomatal reconstruction of palaeo-[CO2] during global greenhouse periods or episodes of global warming, are particularly important to our understanding of the role of CO2 as a climate system driver. However, the efficacy of the 'stomatal method' for palaeo-[CO2] reconstruction depends upon the strength of the inverse relationship between stomatal number and the [CO2] in which the leaf developed. However, the impact of heat stress on stomatal initiation and d

High-global warming potential F-gas emissions in California: comparison of ambient-based versus inventory-based emission estimates, and implications of refined estimates.

To provide information for greenhouse gas reduction policies, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) inventories annual emissions of high-global-warming potential (GWP) fluorinated gases, the fastest growing sector of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally. Baseline 2008 F-gas emissions estimates for selected chlorofluorocarbons (CFC-12), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC-22), and hydrofluorocarbons (HFC-134a) made with an inventory-based methodology were compared to emissions estimates made by ambient-based measurements. Significant discrepancies were found, with the inventory-based emission

Ocean acidification and global warming may favor blue carbon service in a Cymodocea nodosa community by modifying carbon metabolism and dissolved organic carbon fluxes.

Ocean acidification (OA) and global warming (GW) drive a variety of responses in seagrasses that may modify their carbon metabolism, including the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fluxes and the organic carbon stocks in upper sediments. In a 45-day full-factorial mesocosm experiment simulating forecasted CO2 and temperature increase in a Cymodocea nodosa community, we found that net community production (NCP) was higher under OA conditions, particularly when combined with warming (i.e., synergistic effect). Moreover, under OA conditions, an increase in aboveground biomass and photosynthetic shoo

Extensive Variation in Thermal Responses and Toxin Content Among 40 Strains of the Cold-Water Diatom Pseudo-nitzschia seriata-In a Global Warming Context.

Phytoplankton are single-celled microorganisms with short generation times that may comprise high diversity in genetic and phenotypic traits, allowing them to acclimate to changes rapidly. High intraspecific genetic variation is well known in phytoplankton, but less is known about variation in physiological traits. To investigate variability and plasticity in genetic, morphological, and physiological traits of the toxigenic diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia in a global warming scenario, we exposed 40 strains of the cold-water P. seriata to different temperatures (2 °C, 6 °C and 10 °C). The Nonclinical Assessment of Trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234ze (E)), a Near Zero Global Warming Potential Propellant for Use in Metered Dose Inhalation Products.

HFO-1234ze (E) is proposed as a near zero global warming propellant for use in metered dose inhaled (MDI) products. This paper describes the non-clinical safety assessment in mice, rats, and dogs and supplements previously reported data (genetic toxicology, short-term toxicology, and reproductive toxicology). In all species, HFO-1234ze (E) was only detectable in blood for a short period after dosing with no evidence of accumulation. HFO-1234ze (E) was without any toxicological effects at very high doses in subchronic (13-week mouse) and chronic (39-week dog) studies. Chronic (26-week) administ

Application of Global Warming Potential Star (GWP*) Values to the AUSNUT 2011-13 Food Composition Database: Creation of the GWP*-AUSNUT 2011-13 Database.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The Global Warming Potential Star (GWP*) refers to the amount of carbon dioxide equivalents produced by food items, with values available for n = 232 Australian food products. The aim of this study was to apply GWP* values to the AUSNUT 2011-13 food composition database to facilitate the calculation of the climate footprint of Australian dietary data. METHODS: To create the GWP*-AUSNUT 2011-13 database, all n = 5740 food and beverage items in AUSNUT 2011-13 were reviewed and GWP* values applied or calculated via a systematic approach. Direct or approximate matches to a

Switching to a Low Global Warming Potential Propellant in a Pressurized Metered-Dose Inhaler Does Not Affect the Pharmacokinetics of Combined Beclometasone Dipropionate/Formoterol Fumarate.

PURPOSE: Use of high global warming potential propellants (eg, 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane [HFA-134a]) in pressurized metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) is being phased down. Extrafine formulation of beclometasone dipropionate (BDP)/formoterol fumarate (FF), approved for the treatment of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease via HFA-134a propellant pMDI, is being reformulated using the low global warming potential propellant 1,1-difluoroethane (HFA-152a). Two studies compared BDP/FF pharmacokinetics delivered via pMDI using HFA-152a versus HFA-134a. METHODS: Both studies (N = 90 in each) w

CO2 removal to reach net zero warming of global methane and nitrous oxide emissions of livestock: Comparison of two metrics under different 2050 FAO scenarios.

Achieving global climate targets requires accurate quantification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and their implied impact on temperature. However, the choice of emission metric-particularly between Global Warming Potential over 100 years (GWP100) and Global Warming Potential Star (GWP*)-can significantly influence how emissions and their contributions to global warming are represented in climate assessments. While metrics do not alter physical temperature outcomes, they affect how emissions' impacts are interpreted, which in turn influences carbon dioxide removal (CDR) estimates and mitigat

Heat-related mortality burden of type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and diabetes complications in mainland China amid global warming: a nationwide, case-crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Rising global temperatures and diabetes pose growing health risks worldwide. Individuals with diabetes are particularly vulnerable to heat, mainly because of impaired thermoregulation. However, the specific heat-related mortality risks associated with diabetes subtypes and complications remain poorly quantified. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, individual-level, time-stratified case-crossover study encompassing 289 902 diabetes-related deaths across mainland China from 2013 to 2019. Death records for 2013-19 were sourced from the China Cause of Death Reporting System, a nationw

Predictive analysis of plankton population dynamics in marine biosphere: a nonlinear ARX neural network for the carbon-thermal-nutrient-plankton asymmetric multifactor system for global warming.

Plankton dynamics lie at the core of biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem function, which makes dependable prediction essential. Neural network-based approximations show strong potential in capturing these nonlinear interactions due to their flexibility and efficiency. In this study, a dynamic nonlinear autoregressive exogenous neural network trained with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm (ARX-LMA) is exploited on the nonlinear carbon thermal nutrient-plankton autonomous dynamics (NCTNP-AD) system for plankton population in the marine biosphere influenced by the impact of global warming and cli

Synergistic impact of temperature rises and ferric oxide nanoparticles on biochemical and oxidative stress biomarkers in Oreochromis niloticus: relevant environmental risk assessment under predicted global warming.

Global warming and contamination of freshwater environments with nanoparticles (NPs) pose a global threat to biodiversity. Numerous studies demonstrated the effects of increasing temperatures and NPs separately, but their combined impact on aquatic life remains poorly understood or unstudied, particularly under predicted rising temperatures resulting from global warming (+ 2 and + 4 °C). So, the present study aims to determine how the temperature rises affect the toxicological characteristics of ferric oxide nanoparticles (Fe2O3 NPs) on the prevalent freshwater fish, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis

Evaluation of Potential Effects of Increased Outdoor Temperatures Due to Global Warming on Cerebral Blood Flow Rate and Respiratory Function in Chronic Obstructive Disease and Anemia.

Global warming due to increased outdoor carbon dioxide (CO2) levels may cause several health problems such as headaches, cognitive impairment, or kidney dysfunction. It is predicted that further increases in CO2 levels will increase the morbidity and mortality of patients affected by a variety of diseases. For instance, patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) may suffer cognitive impairments or intracranial bleeding due to an increased cerebral blood flow rate. Predicting the harmful effects of global warming on human health will help to take measures for potential problems.

Use of diffusion tensor imaging to predict myocardial viability after warm global ischemia: possible avenue for use of non-beating donor hearts.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of myocardial viability after global warm ischemia (WI) but before reperfusion is challenging. We hypothesized that fractional anisotropy (FA), a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameter of water diffusion that characterizes cellular integrity within tissues, provides a rapid and useful method for evaluating the viability of hearts after WI. METHODS: Dog hearts were exposed to 60 minutes of WI after exanguination, explanted and preserved in a cold, non-beating state for 6 hours, using continuous perfusion (CP) or static cold storage (CS). Studies of isolated global brain ischaemia: II. Controlled reperfusion provides complete neurologic recovery following 30 min of warm ischaemia - the importance of perfusion pressure.

OBJECTIVES: Neurologic injury after sudden death is likely due to a reperfusion injury following prolonged brain ischaemia, and remains problematic, especially if the cardiac arrest is unwitnessed. This study applies a newly developed isolated model of global brain ischaemia (simulating unwitnessed sudden death) for 30 min to determine if controlled reperfusion permits neurologic recovery. METHODS: Among the 17 pigs undergoing 30 min of normothermic global brain ischaemia, 6 received uncontrolled reperfusion with regular blood (n = 6), and 11 were reperfused for 20 min with a warm controlled
