Pierre Robin sequence (formerly a syndrome) is named after the French stomatologist who, in 1923 and 1934, described the problems associated with micrognathia in newborn. It comprises mandibular micrognathia, U-shaped cleft palate, and glossoptosis. The typical symptoms are hypoxaemia, noisy breathing, snoring, stridor, cyanosis, bradycardia, feeding difficulties, and failure to thrive. Distraction osteogenesis has recently been considered as a surgical option for early intervention to lengthen the mandible and relieve respiratory problems. Piezosurgery offers a modality to make precise bone c

Assessing the severity of glossopharyngeal obstruction is important for the diagnosis and therapy of obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). The polysomnography (PSG) with nasopharyngeal tube insertion (NPT-PSG) has shown good results in assessing glossopharyngeal obstruction. The objective of this study was to compare NPT-PSG with Friedman tongue position (FTP) classification which was also used to evaluate the glossopharyngeal obstruction. One hundred and five patients with OSAHS diagnosed by PSG were included in the study. All the patients were successfully examined by NPT-PSG. B

The triad of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and concomitant airway obstruction defined as "Robin sequence" (RS) is caused by oropharyngeal developmental events constrained by a reduced stomadeal space. This sequence of abnormal embryonic development also results in an anatomical configuration that might predispose the fetus to a cleft palate. RS is heterogeneous and many different etiologies have been described including syndromic, RS-plus, and isolated forms. For an optimal diagnosis, subsequent treatment and prognosis, a thorough understanding of the embryology and pathogenesis is necessary. Th

Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) is a combination of micrognathia and glossoptosis that leads to airway obstruction, feeding problems, and potentially other sequelae that can complicate early life. Currently, therapy for these newborns and infants is focused on preventing fatality or complications until the jaw can grow sufficiently to correct airway obstruction and associated problems. For patients with mild PRS, treatments include conservative measures such as airway maintenance and a feeding tube. For more severe cases, a surgical procedure is necessary. To the authors' knowledge, the effectiven

Robin sequence (RS) is a heterogeneous congenital condition characterized by retrognathia, glossoptosis, upper airway obstruction, and very often, posterior U-shape cleft palate. Half the children with RS have an underlying syndrome, either identified (syndromic RS) or not (RS+). Long-term intellectual developmental outcome first depends on the underlying diagnosis and is often poor in syndromic cases. On the contrary, the rare studies that analysed the long-term developmental outcome of children with isolated RS who received effective treatment of their respiratory and feeding difficulties ea

Nager syndrome is a rare syndrome resulting from developmental abnormalities of the first and second branchial arches. Nager syndrome is rare and mostly sporadic. The main clinical features consist of craniofacial, limb, and musculoskeletal morphogenesis. These findings included malar hypoplasia, maxillomandibular hypoplasia, micrognathia, downslanting palpebral fissures, cleft palate, ear anomalies, hypoplastic thumb, short forearm, proximal radioulnar synostosis, atrial septal defect, lower limb deformities, and flat nasal bridge. The prevalence is unknown; about 100 cases of Nager syndrome

BACKGROUND: Ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) procedures have emerged as a viable option for potentially life-saving procedures in fetuses with predicted airway compromise at birth. The ability to maintain maternal-fetal uteroplacental perfusion allows for prolonged procedures in a stable fetal hemodynamic environment thereby avoiding neonatal hypoxemia or sequelae of an emergent tracheostomy.
CASE: A 26-year-old female presents with a 20-week ultrasound and subsequent magnetic resonance imaging demonstrating severe fetal micrognathia (jaw index below the 5th percentile), glossoptosis, po

Pierre Robin sequence is the constellation of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and tongue-based airway obstruction. When airway obstruction is severe, feeding, growth, and respiratory demise are at risk. Neonatal mandibular distraction osteogenesis is a technique which improves tongue-based airway obstruction and avoids tracheostomy in patients with severe expressions of Pierre Robin sequence. Its efficacy in relieving airway obstruction is well documented, and it has become the surgical intervention of choice at many craniofacial centers. However, this is an uncommon procedure which can be perform

BACKGROUND: Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) patients are known for their triad of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction. Their airway can be a challenge even for the most experienced pediatric anesthesiologist.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 9 day old 3.5 kg boy diagnosed with PRS, cleft palate, and a vallecular cyst with severe upper airway obstruction. The combination of PRS, cleft palate and the presence of vallecular cyst made this a cascade reaction of difficult airway. Due to his unique anatomy, we didn't appreciate how difficult his airway was until multiple attemp

Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) is characterized by the triad micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction, commonly associated with cleft palate. This study reports the case of a patient with characteristics consistent with the diagnosis of PRS in the 1st week of life. To stabilize the airway, oro-tracheal intubation was performed without success, followed by tracheostomy and glossopexy and after a small improvement in symptoms, it was decided to perform the mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO). At the age of 6, her maxillofacial development was within expectations, with patent airway,

Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) is a congenital condition characterized by micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction, often accompanied by a cleft palate. Severe cases pose additional challenges in surgical management due to anatomical abnormalities. A 3-year-old male with severe PRS underwent a cleft palate repair procedure, which was a multidisciplinary approach, and the successful repair of the cleft palate and uneventful postoperative recovery were attributed to the team's collaborative efforts. This case also highlights the importance of genetic evaluation and testing in managing PRS

Children with craniofacial syndromes are at risk of sleep disordered breathing, the most common being obstructive sleep apnea. Midface hypoplasia in children with craniosynostosis and glossoptosis in children with Pierre Robin syndrome are well recognized risk factors, but the etiology is often multifactorial and many children have multilevel airway obstruction. We examine the published evidence and explore the current management strategies in these complex patients. Some treatment modalities are similar to those used in otherwise healthy children such as adenotonsillectomy, positive pressure

A 74 year-old man with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) was adimitted to our hospital. He developed bradykinesia 13 years previously. Neurological examination showed cognitive dysfunction, supranuclear vertical gaze palsy, pseudobulbar palsy, and parkinsonism such as akinesia, rigidity, and resting tremor. His chief complaint was glossoptosis with jaw-opening dystonia associated with rapid dose-elevation and/or overdose of dopaminergic drugs. After gradual tapering of dopaminergic drugs, he could keep his mouth closed all day. Drug-induced dystonia is a frequently encountered but often ove

The Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) characterized by mandibular micro- or retrognathia and glossoptosis with or without cleft palate, presents clinically with intermittent upper airway obstruction (UAO). It is associated with other malformations in about half the cases. The incidence is about 1:8,500. Isolated PRS without other malformations does not, by itself, appear to affect neurodevelopment. Active intervention may therefore be required to reduce the risk for neurocognitive impairment resulting from UAO. Current treatment options for UAO range from prone positioning, use of a nasopharyngeal t

Babies with Pierre Robin syndrome have serious life-threatening risks because of acute respiratory distress and difficult airway management. It is difficult to perform endotracheal intubation in these babies for general anesthesia. We present successful insertion of laryngeal mask airway in a neonate with typical clinical features of Pierre-Robin syndrome using a size 1 laryngeal mask airway for a ventriculoperitoneal shunt operation. The patient had micrognathia, glossoptosis with cleft palate, and partial trismus. His mouth opening was restricted to 0.6 cm. Anesthesia was deepened with sevof

The Marshall-Smith syndrome (MSS) is rare congenital disorder, characterized by a triad of orofacial dysmorphism, failure to thrive, and accelerated osseous maturation. An 8-year-old boy with MSS associated with congenital glaucoma, corneal erosion, laryngomalacia, glossoptosis, choanal stenoses, bilateral peripheral hearing defect, ventriculomegaly, congenital heart disease (atrial septal defect), chronic pulmonary disease, and scoliosis was reported. A tracheostomy with endotracheal tube insertion was performed for his difficult airway. He has longer survival time than those MSS patients hit

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether positioning the body in a lateral decubitus position will facilitate nasogastric tube insertion in unconscious patients.
BACKGROUND: Inserting a nasogastric tube into unconscious patients can be challenging because these patients cannot cooperate with the operator. The piriform sinus and arytenoid cartilage are the most commonly reported impaction sites. However, we found that the first impaction site was the backward displaced tongue when inserting a nasogastric tube in unconscious patients who often exhibited glossoptosis. Performing an intubation

Patients with Pierre Robin syndrome are characterized by micrognathia, retrognathia, glossoptosis, and respiratory obstruction and are prone to have a difficult-to-intubate airway. The McGrath® MAC video laryngoscope provides a better view of the glottis than a Macintosh laryngoscope, but it is not easy to insert an endotracheal tube through the vocal cords because a video laryngoscope has a much greater curvature than that of a conventional direct laryngoscope and an endotracheal tube has a different curvature. The Frova Intubating Introducer is used as a railroad for an endotracheal tube in
