A quantitative evaluation of gloves used with non-powered hand tools in routine maintenance tasks.

Non-powered hand tools are a major means of carrying out routine maintenance and repair activities. The use of gloves in such situations is essential in order to protect the hands from potential injuries. Together, the gloves and hand tools accomplish the task by transmitting the muscle force on to the workpiece. Several studies have reported that the capability of hands to exert force/torque is severely influenced by the use of gloves. The use of gloves could also lead to a cumulative trauma disorder, rapid onset of muscular fatigue, etc. Most previous studies have focused on determining the

Use of personal protective equipment in a radiology room at a veterinary teaching hospital.

The use of personal protective equipment by veterinary workers during radiographic imaging is inconsistent. While the self-reported use of leaded aprons and thyroid shields approaches 100% in some studies, the use of leaded gloves and eyeglasses is much lower. Previous studies describing personal protective equipment use are based on self-reporting. Objectives of this prospective, observational study were to describe use of leaded personal protective equipment during radiographic imaging by veterinary workers, and to compare observed use with self-reported use. Use of leaded personal protectiv

Gloves against mineral oils and mechanical hazards: composites of carboxylated acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber latex.

Resistance to permeation of noxious chemical substances should be accompanied by resistance to mechanical factors because the glove material may be torn, cut or punctured in the workplace. This study reports on glove materials, protecting against mineral oils and mechanical hazards, made of carboxylated acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (XNBR) latex. The obtained materials were characterized by a very high resistance of the produced materials to oil permeation (breakthrough time > 480 min). The mechanical properties, and especially tear resistance, of the studied materials were improved after the

Radiation exposure to the hands of operators during angiographic procedures.

The hands of those undertaking angiographic studies are close to the X-ray beam and may receive high doses. However, during recent years little information is available on these doses. The exposure to the left and right hand was measured with thermoluminescent dose meters during several conventional angiographic procedures. Mean doses to the left hand ranged from 0.24 to 0.96 mSv and to the right hand from 0.12 to 0.71 mSv, related to the type of procedure performed. The protection provided by new flexible lead gloves was estimated. The dose reduction with the glove was 19.5%. Operators can ap

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis caused by nitroglycerin.

Irritant contact dermatitis caused by occupational contact with nitroglycerin has been known since the end of the last century. Nitroglycerin is an allergen, and the transdermal drug delivery systems for nitroglycerin recently used to treat angina pectoris have sensitized. 4 patients with allergic contact dermatitis caused by nitroglycerin from explosives are described, and 1 patient who was sensitized by transdermal nitroplaster. On patch testing, dynamite and/or the explosive components nitroglycerin, ethylene glycol dinitrate and dinitrotoluene gave allergic reactions. The following concent

Indications and the requirements for single-use medical gloves.

While the requirements for single-use gloves for staff protection are clearly defined, the conventional medical differentiation between "sterile surgical gloves" used during surgical procedures and "single-use medical gloves" used in non-sterile medical areas does not adequately define the different requirements in these two areas of use. Sterilization of single-use medical gloves is not performed if sterility is not required; thus, another terminology must be found to identify the safety quality of non-sterile single-use medical gloves. Therefore, the labeling of such gloves should reflect th

[Focusing on occupational safety in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy: a systematic review].

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) serves as a core treatment modality for malignant tumors on the peritoneal surface, with its clinical application growing increasingly widespread. However, the potential genotoxicity, teratogenicity, and carcinogenicity of chemotherapy drugs expose healthcare workers to occupational risks. This review systematically analyzes 10 relevant research papers, organizing existing evidence on HIPEC occupational safety around five core variables: collective protective equipment, personal protective equipment, air sample monitoring, surface sampling moni

Dermal exposure to electroplating fluids and metalworking fluids in the UK.

This paper describes workplace dermal exposure measurements that were carried out by the Health and Safety Laboratory as part of the EU RISKOFDERM project. Exposure to metalworking fluids (MWFs) was measured at three sites on 25 subjects who were 'mechanically treating solid objects' as they loaded and supervised milling and boring machines and lathes. Thirty-one samples were obtained, of which 18 were exposures to neat mineral oils and 13 to water-oil mixes. All subjects wore Tyvek whole-body oversuits that were analysed in their entirety to extract the MWF. The geometric mean surface loading

Prick-prick with fresh foods in patients with latex allergy.

The quick spread of AIDS and other contagious infectious diseases has resulted in what was first voluntary, and subsequently recommended and compulsory, use of protection from contact with blood or bodily fluids. This protection has been especially widespread in the healthcare field. In the in vivo diagnosis of food allergy, it has been proven that the skin prick-prick test is sometimes more sensitive than skin prick test with commercial extracts. The aim of our study was to prove that handling fresh foods prepared for the prick-prick test with latex gloves can tamper with the results in patie

Using gloves wisely: rethinking glove use for health, safety, and environmental sustainability.

Non-sterile gloves (NSG) are essential for reducing transmission of pathogens and for protecting patients and staff. Their overconsumption can lead not only to an increased risk of cross-contamination but also increased plastic waste and downstream environmental effects. Glove reduction campaigns worldwide have safely and successfully reduced their inappropriate use and associated waste. In this multidisciplinary commentary, we discuss the sweeping public health and environmental consequences of NSG overuse and strategies to implement a successful glove stewardship campaign.

Coxiella burnetii seroprevalence and risk for humans on dairy cattle farms, the Netherlands, 2010-2011.

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a recognized occupational infection in persons who have regular contact with ruminants. We determined C. burnetii seroprevalence in residents living or working on dairy cattle farms with ≥50 adult cows and identified risk factors for seropositivity. Serum samples from farm residents, including employees, were tested for C. burnetii IgG and IgM; seroprevalence was 72.1% overall and 87.2%, 54.5%, and 44.2% among farmers, spouses, and children, respectively. Risk factors included farm location in southern region, larger herd size, farm employment, birds in

The effects of vibration-reducing gloves on finger vibration.

UNLABELLED: Vibration-reducing (VR) gloves have been used to reduce the hand-transmitted vibration exposures from machines and powered hand tools but their effectiveness remains unclear, especially for finger protection. The objectives of this study are to determine whether VR gloves can attenuate the vibration transmitted to the fingers and to enhance the understanding of the mechanisms of how these gloves work. Seven adult male subjects participated in the experiment. The fixed factors evaluated include hand force (four levels), glove condition (gel-filled, air bladder, no gloves), and locat

Latex allergy: are you at risk?

The prevalence of latex allergies in healthcare workers has significantly increased over the past 2 decades. Increases in exposure to latex products in healthcare environments are related primarily to the use of gloves for barrier protection. In the early 1980s, with the implementation of universal precautions and appropriate healthcare worker protection, latex glove use dramatically rose in many countries. Manufacturing techniques and additional factories for latex gloves were developed to meet the tremendous demand. As a result of new "fast-track" production processes, some of the latex glov

Skin exposure to epoxy in the pipe relining trade - an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Epoxy resin systems (ERSs) are frequent causes of occupational allergic contact dermatitis. Epoxy pipe relining has become a widely used alternative to replacing old and worn drain pipes in housing, and involves a high risk of skin exposure to ERSs. OBJECTIVES: To map out work methods, protective measures and skin and surface contamination among workers involved in epoxy pipe relining, as a basis for prevention of occupational skin disease. METHODS: Twenty-one employees in eight relining companies in Stockholm County were observed. Contact and contamination with ERSs and the use

Occupational Skin Disease in Physicians: A Review of the Literature.

OBJECTIVES: Occupational skin disease (OSD) arises from work-related activity. However, there is a paucity of literature on OSD in physicians. The aim of the this review was therefore to examine and summarize what types of symptomatic OSD physicians experience. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search on Cochrane Library, Embase, and Pubmed. RESULTS: Contact dermatitis from formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde were found in 11.5 and 13.5% of cases, respectively. In total 2.4-14.9% had latex allergy. The reported standardized incidence ratio of squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma was

The effects of response effort on safe performance by therapists at an autism treatment facility.

The effects of response effort on safe behaviors (i.e., glove wearing, hand sanitizing, and electrical outlet replacement) exhibited by therapists at an autism treatment center were examined. Participants were exposed to 2 or 3 levels of effort (i.e., high, medium, low) for each dependent variable. Results showed increased safe performance during the low-effort conditions relative to other conditions across all dependent variables for all participants.

Dermatological aspects of a successful introduction and continuation of alcohol-based hand rubs for hygienic hand disinfection.

With the new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guideline on hand hygiene, hospitals often introduce alcohol-based hand rubs for hand disinfection. Healthcare workers, however, may reject the new products because of skin irritation or other skin-related problems, which they experience after years of handwashing. In order to facilitate a successful introduction and continued use of alcohol-based hand rubs in hospitals, we have reviewed and summarized the major studies on the topic. Occupational hand dermatitis may occur in up to 30% of healthcare workers. It is mainly described as
