BACKGROUND: Prediabetes is a well-established risk factor for progression to overt diabetes mellitus (DM), which is in turn associated with development of hypertension (HTN) and vice versa. However, the role of prediabetes and HbA1c in particular as an independent risk factor for the development of hypertension is unclear.
AIM: In this current study, we aimed to evaluate the association between both fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels in the prediabetes range and development of HTN among a large cohort of normotensive subjects.
DESIGN AND METHODS: We investigated 5

OBJECTIVE: Bilirubin is a potent antioxidant, and serum total bilirubin (STB) concentrations correlate negatively with cardiovascular risk. In adult diabetic patients and in healthy adults, a negative correlation between STB and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) has been reported. We investigated whether there is such an association in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
METHODS: The study group included 224 patients with type 1 diabetes duration of more than 12 months. Patients with suspected or confirmed hemolytic anemia or liver dysfunction were excluded.
RESULTS: A statisti

BACKGROUND: The Hemoglobin Glycation Index (HGI) quantifies the difference between observed and predicted glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) values, and has connections to multiple adverse outcomes. However, the relationship between HGI and the risk of diabetic nephropathy (DN) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains underexplored. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between baseline HGI and the risk of DN development among patients with T2DM through a retrospective cohort study.
METHODS: A single-center retrospective study was conducted on 1050 newly diagnos

Hemoglobin glycation index (HGI), defined as the difference between the observed HbA1c value and the value of HbA1c predicted from plasma glucose levels, represents a measure of the degree of non-enzymatic glycation of hemoglobin and it has been found to be positively associated with micro- and macro-vascular complications in subjects with type 2 diabetes. To investigate the pathophysiological abnormalities responsible for the increased cardiovascular risk of patients with higher HGI, we evaluated the association of HGI with cardio-metabolic characteristics in nondiabetic offspring of type 2 d

BACKGROUND: The hemoglobin glycation index (HGI) represents the discrepancy between the glucose management indicator (GMI) based on mean blood glucose levels and laboratory values of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). The HGI is a promising indicator for identifying individuals with excessive glycosylation, facilitating personalized evaluation and prediction of diabetic complications. However, the factors influencing the HGI in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) remain unclear. Autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β cells is central in T1D pathogenesis, yet insulin resistance can also be a feature

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis, marked by decreased bone density and heightened fracture risk, is prevalent in aging individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The hemoglobin glycation index (HGI), a novel biomarker for glycation status, reflects advanced glycation end products (AGEs) accumulation. However, its role in bone metabolism and osteoporosis development remains poorly understood.
METHODS: We enrolled 412 hospitalized T2DM patients to investigate the relationship between HGI and vertebral bone mineral density (BMD). BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and bon

Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is a well-established biomarker reflecting chronic glycemic control in diabetes. It accumulates through non-enzymatic glycation of hemoglobin under sustained hyperglycemia and serves as a surrogate of metabolic memory. Emerging in parallel, glycosylated RNA (glycoRNA), small noncoding RNAs bearing covalently attached N-linked glycans, has revealed unexpected roles in immune signaling and glycoimmunomodulation. While glycation and glycosylation represent distinct biochemical processes, both are modulated by glucose availability and cellular stress. This opinion paper
