Microwave-Assisted Subcritical Water Extraction Method for the Optimized Isolation of Cellulose From Residual Soybean Hulls.

Agro-industrial lignocellulosic wastes represent a huge source of biopolymers, proteins, carbohydrates, and active compounds. Their fractionation through eco-friendly routes is a challenge in accessing the components of interest while minimizing environmental impacts. In this study, a 20-min microwave-assisted subcritical water extraction (MASWE) was selected to isolate cellulose from soybean hulls. This emerging green hydrothermal process, coupled with a microwave-assisted alkaline (MW-NaOH) treatment, enabled the reduction of harsh chemical employment compared to classical biomass fractionat

Strong, Tough and Flame-Retardant Bio-Adhesives of Soybean Meal with High Penetrability by Hierarchical Dual Bio-Inspired Strategy.

The development of sustainable, high-performance bio-adhesives to replace formaldehyde-based resins remains a critical challenge for the wood industry. However, the low water resistance, poor penetration, and weak adhesion strength severely bottleneck the practical application of bio-adhesives. Here, we present a strong, tough, and flame-retardant soybean meal (SM)-based adhesive with high penetration through a hierarchical dual bio-inspired strategy, combining the hard-soft phase combination of bivalve hinges and the root-like topological entanglement of plants. In this system, calcium sulfoa

Leaf shape, planting density, and nitrogen application affect soybean yield by changing direct and diffuse light distribution in the canopy.

When attempting to maximize the crop yield from field-grown soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) by means of improving the light conditions for photosynthesis in the canopy, it is crucial to find the optimal planting density and nitrogen application rate. The soybean plants that were the subject of our experiment were cultivated in N-dense mutual pairs, and included two cultivars with different leaf shapes; one cultivar sported ovate leaves (O-type) and the other lanceolate leaves (L-type). We analyzed the results quantitatively to determine the amount of spatial variation in light distribution an

Proteomic Analysis Reveals Salt-Tolerant Mechanism in Soybean Applied with Plant-Derived Smoke Solution.

Salt stress of soybean is a serious problem because it reduces plant growth and seed yield. To investigate the salt-tolerant mechanism of soybean, a plant-derived smoke (PDS) solution was used. Three-day-old soybeans were subjected to PDS solution under 100 mM NaCl for 2 days, resulting in PDS solution improving soybean root growth, even under salt stress. Under the same condition, proteins were analyzed using the proteomic technique. Differential abundance proteins were associated with transport/formaldehyde catabolic process/sucrose metabolism/glutathione metabolism/cell wall organization in

Biscuits Prepared with Enzymatically-Processed Soybean Meal Are Rich in Isoflavone Aglycones, Sensorially Well-Accepted and Stable during Storage for Six Months.

Soybean meal (SBM) is a co-product of the soybean oil industry that is rich in bioactive compounds, such as isoflavones. We aimed to study the effects of processing SBM by fermentation (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) (FSBM) and enzymatic hydrolysis (CelluMax C, a commercial cellulase) (ESBM) on its chemical composition, with emphasis on isoflavones. Fermentation increased protein content by 9%, ash content by 7%, dietary fiber by 11% and minerals by up to 38%, except for iron, which decreased by 26%. Fermentation completely removed oligosaccharides from SBM, while enzymatic processing decreased oli

Low leaf hydraulic conductance associated with drought tolerance in soybean.

Lack of water is the most serious environmental constraint on agricultural production. More efficient use of water resources is a key solution for increased plant productivity in water-deficit environments. We examined the hydraulic characteristics of a 'slow wilting' phenotype in soybean (Glycine max Merr.), PI 416937, which has been shown to have relatively constant transpiration rates above a threshold atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD). The VPD response of PI 416937 was confirmed. Three experiments are reported to examine the hypothesis that the VPD response was a result of low hydra

Evaluating soybean planting date and at-planting insecticide as a management strategy for Resseliella maxima (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae).

Soybean gall midge (Resseliella maxima Gagné) was confirmed in 2019 as a new species in the Midwestern United States. It is known to occur in seven states (Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota) and can cause up to 100% yield loss in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) for the first 30 m from the field edge. Field and greenhouse observations indicate R. maxima infests soybean stems through fissures at the base of the plant during early vegetative growth stages. Given the importance of plant stage for infestation and the limited knowledge on chemical control,

Functional Genomics: From Soybean to Legume.

The Fabaceae family, the third-largest among flowering plants, is nutritionally vital, providing rich sources of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Leguminous plants, such as soybeans, peas, and chickpeas, typically contain two to three times more protein than cereals like wheat and rice, with low fat content (primarily unsaturated fats) and no cholesterol, making them essential for cardiovascular health and blood sugar management. Since the release of the soybean genome in 2010, genomic research in Fabaceae has advanced dramatically. High-quality reference genomes have been assem

Soy protein selectively accumulates formaldehyde.

Soy protein (SP) is easily obtained from defatted soybeans that have had soybean oil removed. Therefore, the materials consisting of soy protein are not only environmentally benign but also sustainable materials. We prepared the SP - GPTMS composite materials by mixing the SP and a silane coupling reagent, 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS), and demonstrated the accumulation of various aldehydes, such as formaldehyde (HAld), acetaldehyde (AcAld), butyl aldehyde (BuAld), and benzaldehyde (BnAld), by the SP - GPTMS composite materials. As a result, when the composite materials were incuba

Constructing in-situ and real-time monitoring methods during soy sauce production by miniature fiber NIR spectrometers.

The digestion rate of steamed soybean (DRSS), protease activity of koji (PAK) and formaldehyde nitrogen content of moromi (FNCM) are key indicators to monitor soy sauce production. Currently, monitoring these indicators relies on workers' experience, which can sometimes lead to low material utilization rates and even fermentation failures. Near-infrared spectra were collected during soybean steaming, as well as koji and moromi fermentation, using miniature fiber spectrometers. These spectra were optimized using four pretreatment methods, and regression models were constructed using PLS, iPLS,

Soybean polyenylphosphatidylcholine (PPC) is beneficial in liver and extrahepatic tissue injury: An update in experimental research.

Polyenylphosphatidylcholine (PPC) is a purified polyunsaturated phosphatidylcholine extract of soybeans. This article updates PPC's beneficial effects on various forms of liver cell injury and other tissues in experimental research. PPC downregulates hepatocyte CYP2E1 expression and associated hepatotoxicity, as well as attenuates oxidative stress, apoptosis, lipoprotein oxidation and steatosis in alcoholic and nonalcoholic liver injury. PPC inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokine production, while stimulating anti-inflammatory cytokine secretion in ethanol or lipopolysaccharide-stimulated Kupffer

Development, characterization and in vitro bile salts binding capacity of selenium nanoparticles stabilized by soybean polypeptides.

The paper presents the positive effect of soybean polypeptides (SP) on the stability and the potential hypolipidemic effect of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs). After preparing SeNPs, SP with different molecular weight were introduced to stabilize SeNPs. We found that the SP with molecular weight >10 kDa (SP5) had the best stabilizing effect on SeNPs. We inferred that the steric resistance resulting from the long chains of SP5 protected SeNPs from collision-mediated aggregation, and the electrostatic repulsions between SP5 and SeNPs also played a positive role in stabilizing SeNPs. The as-prepar

Flavor differences of soybean and defatted soybean fermented soy sauce and its correlation with the enzyme profiles of the kojis.

BACKGROUND: Soybeans and defatted soybeans, commonly used as protein ingredients, have different flavors of their fermented soy sauce. Clarifying the differences between the two soy sauces, as well as the formation mechanism, is an important prerequisite for improving the flavor of defatted soybean soy sauce. To this goal, the aroma characteristics of two soy sauces and their volatile profiles were compared by sensory evaluation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and eight enzyme activities and volatile profiles of matured koji were determined. RESULTS: Sensory results showed that the

Foliar application of 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone Fe-chelate [Fe(mpp)3 ] induces responses at the root level amending iron deficiency chlorosis in soybean.

Iron (Fe) deficiency chlorosis (IDC) affects the growth of several crops, especially when growing in alkaline soils. The application of synthetic Fe-chelates is one of the most commonly used strategies in IDC amendment, despite their associated negative environmental impacts. In a previous work, the Fe-chelate tris(3-hydroxy-1-(H)-2-methyl-4-pyridinonate) iron(III) [Fe(mpp)3 ] has shown great potential for alleviating IDC in soybean (Glycine max) in the early stages of plant development under hydroponic conditions. Herein, its efficacy was verified under soil conditions in soybean grown from s
