Neurognathostomiasis in a young child in India: A case report.

Eosinophilc meningitis is commonly associated with Angiostrongylus and Gnathostoma infection and has largely been reported from Thailand. We present the first case report of neurognathostomaisis in a pediatric patient from India. A 3.5 year old girl presented with fever, parasthesis, behavioral changes followed by flaccid quadriparesis. Neuroimaging showed haemorrhagic radiculomyelitis with cerebrospinal fluid eosinophilia. Diagnosis of Gnathostoma infection was confirmed serologically and she was treated with anthelminthic drugs and steroids. This report emphasizes the increasing importance o

Diagnosis of gnathostomiasis by skin testing using partially purified specific antigen and total IgE levels.

BACKGROUND: A finding of antibodies to Gnathostoma spinigerum 24-kDa antigen by immunoblot analysis is currently used to confirm a diagnosis of gnathostomiasis. A simple skin test for the diagnosis of gnathostomiasis was developed, and the results were evaluated and compared with the standard Western blot (WB) test. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Bangkok, Thailand, in 2008-2011. All eligible patients were tested with partially purified proteins of mAb-detected fractions pooled and sterilized by 0.2 μm diameter syringe filter, with a ph

Sero-epidemiological survey of gnathostomiasis in Lao PDR.

While human gnathostomiasis cases have been reported sporadically in Lao PDR since 1975, little is known about the disease in this country. We aimed to investigate sero-prevalence of gnathostomiasis and Gnathostoma species in Lao PDR. One village each in the north, central and south regions of Lao PDR was selected as the study sites. Overall, 125 (29.8%) of 420 sera from the randomly selected participants were sero-positive by immunoblot technique, with anti-Gnathostoma IgG antibody against the 24 kDa fraction. The sero-prevalence was high in the central (47.1%) and south (38.6%), but low (3.6

Human gnathostomiasis: a neglected food-borne zoonosis.

BACKGROUND: Human gnathostomiasis is a food-borne zoonosis. Its etiological agents are the third-stage larvae of Gnathostoma spp. Human gnathostomiasis is often reported in developing countries, but it is also an emerging disease in developed countries in non-endemic areas. The recent surge in cases of human gnathostomiasis is mainly due to the increasing consumption of raw freshwater fish, amphibians, and reptiles. METHODS: This article reviews the literature on Gnathostoma spp. and the disease that these parasites cause in humans. We review the literature on the life cycle and pathogenesis

Evaluation of Rapid IgG4 Test for Diagnosis of Gnathostomiasis.

Human gnathostomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Gnathostoma nematode infection. A rapid, reliable, and practical immunoassay, named dot immuno-gold filtration assay (DIGFA), was developed to supporting clinical diagnosis of gnathostomiasis. The practical tool detected anti-Gnathostoma-specific IgG4 in human serum using crude extract of third-stage larvae as antigen. The result of the test was shown by anti-human IgG4 monoclonal antibody conjugated colloidal gold. The sensitivity and specificity of the test were both 100% for detection in human sera from patients with gnathostomiasis (13

[Cutaneous gnathostomiasis, first confirmed case in Colombia].

Gnathostomiasis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by some species of helminthes belonging to the genus Gnathostoma . It has a wide clinical presentation and its diagnosis is a challenge. Tropical and subtropical countries are endemic, and its transmission is associated with eating raw or undercooked meat from fresh water animals. Increasing global tourism and consuming exotic foods have produced a noticeable rise in cases of the disease in the last decades. However, in our country, there has not been any confirmed case of gnathostomiasis previously reported. We present the case of a 63-year-old C

A filtration-based rapid test using a partially purified third-stage larval antigen to detect specific antibodies for the diagnosis of gnathostomiasis.

Human gnathostomiasis is an emerging food-borne parasitic disease caused by nematodes of the genus Gnathostoma. Currently, serological tests are commonly applied to support clinical diagnosis. In the present study, a simple and rapid filtration-based test, dot immune-gold filtration assay (DIGFA) was developed using a partially purified antigen of Gnathostoma third-stage larvae (L3). A total of 180 serum samples were tested to evaluate the diagnostic potential of DIGFA for gnathostomiasis. The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity were 96.7% (29/30) and 100% (25/25), respectively. The cross-r

Gnathostomiasis acquired by British tourists in Botswana.

Infection with Gnathostoma spinigerum has been generally confined to Southeast Asia and Central and South America. However, gnathostomiasis was recently found in British tourists who had visited Botswana. Consequently, travel to Africa should now be considered a risk factor for gnathostomiasis.

Development of Immunochromatographic Test Kit for Rapid Detection of Specific IgG4 Antibody in Whole-Blood Samples for Diagnosis of Human Gnathostomiasis.

Human gnathostomiasis is a harmful food-borne zoonosis caused by roundworms of the genus Gnathostoma. The parasite can occasionally migrate to the central nervous system, causing life-threatening disease and death. Here, we report a new point-of-care (POC) test kit, the gnathostomiasis blood immunochromatographic test (GB-ICT) kit. The kit is based on recombinant Gnathostoma spinigerum antigen and detects specific IgG4 antibody in whole-blood samples (WBSs). The GB-ICT kit showed potentially high diagnostic values with simulated WBSs (n = 248), which were obtained by spiking patients' sera wit
