PURPOSE: To report a case of ocular Gnathostomiasis presenting as branch retinal artery occlusion.
METHOD: Observational case report.
RESULT: A 22-year-old Asian woman presented to her ophthalmologist with redness, tearing, and decreased vision in her left eye. Examination revealed anterior uveitis and branch retinal artery occlusion associated with both intra-retinal and vitreous hemorrhage. The patient was treated with topical corticosteroids and cycloplegics. After 3 weeks, she presented in our emergency, with further decrease in vision and worsening pain in the left eye. Slit lamp examin

Twenty five patients with nodular migratory eosinophilic panniculitis (gnathostomiasis) were studied, several samples of skin were taken in different periods of evolution; and histologic criteria are established for the first time in literature. The histological picture was different and changed according to the day the biopsy was taken. Three parasites were recovered from the skin material showing all the features of generic gnathostoma.

Human gnathostomiasis is a foodborne zoonotic nematode infection caused by the larval stage of Gnathostoma species. Although historically reported predominantly from Asia and America, cases are increasingly identified in previously non-endemic regions. The heterogeneous clinical presentation and diagnostic challenges likely contribute to underrecognition of the global disease burden. Current evidence is largely derived from case reports and case series, with a notable lack of prospective studies. To better delineate the epidemiological distribution and clinical characteristics of human gnathos

Eosinophilic myelitis is an important cause of transverse myelopathy and has to be considered in an appropriate clinical setting. Eosinophilic myelitis due to parasitic infection should be suspected in cases with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) eosinophilia along with migratory serpiginous skin lesions and recent travel to endemic areas. We report a case with a 1-month history of fever followed by truncal paresthesias, erythematous creeping skin eruptions, and paraparesis with blood and CSF eosinophilia on a background history of consuming undercooked fish. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) spine sho

Gnathostomiasis is a zoonotic nematode parasite disease, most commonly acquired by eating raw or undercooked fish. Although the disease is well known in parts of Asia and Central and South America, relatively few cases have been reported from Africa. Raw fish consumed in the Okavango River delta area of Botswana, and in nearby western Zambia, has previously produced laboratory-proven gnathostomiasis in tourists. The purpose of this communication is to record additional cases of the infection acquired in the Okavango delta, and to alert visitors to the inadvisability of eating raw freshwater fi

Intraocular gnathostomiasis is a rare parasitic infection caused by the third-stage larvae of spiruroid nematode Gnanthostoma spp. seen mostly in tropical and subtropical regions. It is a food-borne zoonosis caused by ingestion of raw or undercooked freshwater fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, all of which are known to harbor advanced third-stage larvae of Gnanthostoma spp. To date, 74 cases of intraocular gnathostomiasis have been reported from 12 different countries. Only four countries have reported more than 10 cases each, and India shares the rare distinction of being one of

While human gnathostomiasis cases have been reported sporadically in Lao PDR since 1975, little is known about the disease in this country. We aimed to investigate sero-prevalence of gnathostomiasis and Gnathostoma species in Lao PDR. One village each in the north, central and south regions of Lao PDR was selected as the study sites. Overall, 125 (29.8%) of 420 sera from the randomly selected participants were sero-positive by immunoblot technique, with anti-Gnathostoma IgG antibody against the 24 kDa fraction. The sero-prevalence was high in the central (47.1%) and south (38.6%), but low (3.6

A 59-year-old woman sought treatment of for creeping eruption and erythematous plaques associated with high fever and systemic symptoms. She had a history of eating undercooked freshwater fish raised in Beijing 10 days before admission and reported no travel during the previous year. Blood examination showed eosinophila and ultrasonography detected multiple hypoechoic areas in the liver and spleen. Western blot test detected specific antibodies to the larvae of Gnathostoma spinigerum. Cutaneous and visceral larva migrations associated with G. spinigerum were diagnosed. Twenty-three cases in 12

Gnathostomiasis is a systemic infection caused by migrating nematode larvae of the genus Gnathostoma. It is a zoonosis involving a wide variety of animals as intermediate and definitive hosts, and consumption of raw fish is the main risk factor. The condition is most commonly seen in southeastern Asia, but has been described in a number of other countries, all outside Africa. We report the infection in two travelers returning from southcentral Africa, who presented with non-specific symptoms and marked eosinophilia, and in whom schistosomiasis was initially suspected. The typical migratory ski

Thirty-eight (designated as cases) of 60 Korean emigrants who consumed raw fresh water fish in Yangon, Myanmar developed migratory swellings and creeping eruptions on the back, abdomen, flank, and other cutaneous areas 1-10 weeks later. The symptoms included itching, nodule formation, fatigue, urticaria, fever, pain on the skin, and erythematous plaques. Skin biopsies of two cases revealed no parasites. However, the mean +/- SD peripheral blood eosinophilia among the cases was 6.3 +/- 6.5% (n = 29) and 9.0 +/- 9.8% (n = 26) in two examinations. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of their ser

Gnathostomiasis is a rare nematode disease acquired by travelers to endemic areas. The most common clinical presentations are cutaneous forms; however, neurologic involvement can also occur. We present two cases of gnathostomiasis, one of them with severe neurologic complications, in Spanish travelers to Thailand and Mexico, who consumed local food and became infected.

Reported here are two new cases of imported cutaneous gnathostomiasis that occurred in two Spanish women. The first patient acquired the helminth infection while travelling in Southeast Asia and the second in Mexico. Although the highest prevalence of gnathostomiasis infection is in Southeast Asia, the disease is now an emerging public health problem in some countries of Latin America. The cases reported here demonstrate the increasing frequency with which human gnathostomiasis is being diagnosed in nonendemic countries as a result of more extensive international travel and migration.

Gnathostomiasis was first described in Mexico in 1970, and endemic areas have been spreading in six states of this country. In Culiacan, Sinaloa, 300 cases of cutaneous larva migrans were recorded between January 1992 and December 1995. In addition, a Gnathostoma larva was surgically removed from the eye of one patient. Cutaneous lesions were observed mainly on the face, neck, arms, and legs. About 70% of the patients showed eosinophilia. A skin biopsy was carried out on 35 patients and the parasite was identified in histopathologic sections of 12 of these patients. In four patients, the larva

The genus Gnathostoma contains at least twelve distinctive species. Among these, 6 species, namely G. spinigerum, G. hispidum, G. doloresi, G. vietnamicum, G. malaysiae and G. nipponicum, are found in wild animals in Asia. Related to human gnathostomiasis, G. spinigerum has long been believed as the only causative species. Until the early 1980s, all gnathostomiasis cases found in major endemic areas in Asia, such as Thailand, China and Japan, were caused by infection with G. spinigerum. In the early 1980s in Japan, new gnathostomiasis cases appeared in urban areas and these cases were shown to

We report a case of human gnathostomiasis presenting with bilateral pleural effusion and probable pericardial involvement. The diagnosis was made on the basis of the patient's country of origin (Nepal), the course of the disease, marked eosinophilia and the identification of Gnathostoma in a thoracic skin biopsy. The patient responded, presumably, to treatment with diethylcarbamazine (Hetrazan). This case is unique in its presentation and occurrence in Israel (although not necessarily acquired in Israel).
