Increasing evidence on goat milk and the health benefits of its derived products beyond its nutritional value show its potential as a functional food. In this study, goat milk fractions were tested for their total antioxidant capacity using different methods (ORAC, ABTS, DPPH and FRAP), as well as their angiotensin-I-converting-enzyme inhibitory and antimicrobial (against Escherichia coli and Micrococcus luteus) activities. Different whey fractions (whey, cation exchange membrane permeate P and retentate R) of two fermented skimmed goat milks (ultrafiltered goat milk fermented with the classic

With the rapid expansion of the meat goat farming industry in China and intensified interregional movement of goats, respiratory diseases have become increasingly prevalent across domestic goat farms-particularly under suboptimal husbandry conditions-posing a significant challenge to effective disease prevention and control. Mannheimia haemolytica, a primary bacterial pathogen implicated in caprine respiratory disease, exhibits marked geographic variation in key phenotypic and genotypic traits, including serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance profiles. To address this critical anim

The goat industry in the UK has expanded rapidly in recent years, but at present there is only a poor understanding of the prevalence of parasitic diseases in this farming system. Here, a questionnaire survey of 110 goat owners was used to address this issue. Problems with louse infestation in the previous 12 months were reported by 23% of owners and 19% reported mange. Chorioptic mange was the most common form, with 14 of 21 cases. Sarcoptic mage accounted for only 3 cases and demodex and psoroptic mange each made up 2 cases. Only 53 farmers (48%) said that they took preventative measures to

INTRODUCTION: Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are known as the vector of diseases such as leishmaniasis, bartonellosis and viral diseases. The aim of this study is to detect the host feeding pattern of sand flies in the endemic areas for leishmaniasis in Turkey (Antalya, Kayseri) and Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as well as the presence of Leishmania DNA in the specimens.
METHODS: One-hundred seventy-six blood-fed sand fly specimens were examined for blood meal analysis. A SYBR Green-PCR assay was performed with specific forward primers for each host and a universal reverse primer. Pr

BACKGROUND: The effects of selenium (Se) on animal health due to its antioxidant and immune system regulatory properties are very well-documented. However, there is still a lack of scientific evidence about the effect of Se on muscle tissue. Se supplementation in ruminants will enhance the antioxidant activity of myocytes and increase angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity. Generating bioactive peptides derived from meat could prevent the production of angiotensin II, a key player in the development of cardiovascular diseases.
METHODS: Forty-five suckling goat kids were rando

A four-year old goat was presented for anorexia and apathy since kidding one week earlier. Physical examination revealed dyspnea, extensive ascites and bilateral distended jugular veins, suggestive of congestive right heart failure. The echocardiographic findings of severe right ventricular and atrial dilatation were consistent with right heart failure. In the absence of abnormalities in the right ventricular outflow tract a diagnosis of cor pulmonale secondary to lung disease was posed. Due to a poor prognosis, the goat was euthanized. Necropsy confirmed cor pulmonale and identified severe ch

A cross-sectional survey was conducted to estimate the incidence of small ruminant abortion and identify its major causes and potential risk factors in goat and sheep flocks in three agroecology and production systems of Ethiopia. Information on pregnancy outcomes and management risk factors were collected for 299 goat and 242 sheep flocks. Blood samples were collected from 133 sheep and 90 goat flocks and tested for Coxiella burnetii, Brucella spp., Chlamydia abortus, and Toxoplasma gondii. A causal diagram outlined relationships between potential predictor variables and abortion in the flock

Brucellosis is one of the neglected zoonotic diseases (NZD) in the world that causes disease globally. Brucella melitensis, one of the organisms responsible for causing the disease in sheep and goat, is responsible for the disease in humans. The disease is transmitted mainly from sheep and goat to humans via ingestion (typically through milk), inhalation, abrasion and so on. Despite the zoonotic importance of the disease, there is lack of comprehensive data such as overall prevalence around the world is yet to be measured. The aim of this study is to review all the available articles on the pr

Currently, a tissue-engineered trachea has been popularly used as a biological graft for tracheal replacement in severe respiratory diseases. In the development of tissue-engineered tracheal scaffolds, in vitro studies play a crucial role in allowing researchers to evaluate the efficacy and safety of scaffold designs and fabrication techniques before progressing to in vivo or clinical trials. This research involved the decellularization of goat trachea using SDS, H2O2, and their combinations. Various quantitative and qualitative assessments were performed, including histological analysis, immu

The course of trypanosomiasis was observed over a period of 68 days in eight Red Sokoto goats experimentally infected with Trypanosoma vivax strain Y58. The goats developed parasitaemia five days after infection; the intensity of parasitaemia varied within and between individual goats. The course of the disease was acute, subacute or chronic. Anaemia was the principal clinocopathological feature of the disease. The rate of development of anaemia was not related to the degree of parasitaemia. Other clinical signs included emaciation, weakness, rough hair coat, profuse lacrimation and developmen

Toxoplasmosis is one of the most widespread foodborne diseases in humans and one of the major abortive pathogens in small ruminants. In South Punjab, Pakistan, the goat sector is pivotal in the economy and goat milk is commonly consumed raw. The aim of our study was to investigate the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii DNA in goat milk and to genotype any isolates; additionally, the prevalence and genotype of T. gondii in aborted goat kid foetuses were investigated. From three farms, previously identified as highly seropositive, milk samples were collected from 40 goats at three different lactati

Black Bengal goat (BBG) is the most adaptable, widely distributed, and prominent goat breed in Bangladesh, well known in the world for its high prolificacy, low demand of feed, tolerance to harsh weather conditions, and disease resistance with remarkably good quality red meat and skin. A large number of indiscriminate research reports on BBG have been published; however, the review on the productive and reproductive performances with different physiological features of BBG in Bangladesh is scarce. This review was conducted to investigate and summarize the available research reports on BBGs to

Trypanosomosis is a major constraint on ruminant livestock production in Africa, Asia, and South America. The principal host species affected varies geographically, but buffalo, cattle, camels, and horses are particularly sensitive. Natural infections with Trypanosoma congolense, T. vivax, T. brucei, and T. evansi have been described in goats. Trypanosomosis in goats produces acute, subacute, chronic, or subclinical forms, being T. vivax, T. congolense, and T. evansi, the most invasive trypanosomes for goats. However, the role of goats in the epidemiology of trypanosomosis is largely discussed

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder of cattle, and its transmission to humans through contaminated food is thought to be the cause of the variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. BSE is believed to have spread from the recycling in cattle of ruminant tissue in meat and bone meal (MBM). However, during this time, sheep and goats were also exposed to BSE-contaminated MBM. Both sheep and goats are experimentally susceptible to BSE, and while there have been no reported natural BSE cases in sheep, two goat BSE field cases have been documented. While cases

The diagnostic challenges linked to rare neurological diseases, including Glioblastoma, remain a significant issue, especially in resource-limited healthcare systems like India. Conventional deep learning algorithms work well for traditional medical imaging tasks, but rare disease datasets have data scarcity and an imbalance. This paper presents GOAT-NET (Glioblastoma, Oligodendroglioma, and Astrocytoma Tumor Network), a meta-learning-based diagnostic framework aimed at improving the categorisation of rare Glioblastoma and Healthy samples using a limited number of annotated MRI samples. It was

The presence of caprine arthritis and encephalitis (CAE) in Spain has never been officially acknowledged but it is suspected. Goats have been imported from other European countries with a high prevalence of the disease, mainly France, and they might have introduced the disease into the indigenous goat population. A serological survey of caprine arthritis and encephalitis virus antibodies was carried out in 22 volunteer dairy Murciano-Granadina goat herds; 2513 lactating goats were tested with an agar gel immunodiffusion test, and 12.1 per cent were found to be positive. Five of the herds were
