Goldenhar syndrome (GS) is a well-recognised condition characterised by variable degree of uni- or bilateral involvement of craniofacial structures involving first and second branchial arches manifesting ocular and auricular anomalies and also vertebral defect. This syndrome presents at birth and its exact aetiology is still unknown. The affections of the neural crest cells may have some role in the multiple malformations of the GS. We present a teenaged female case who attended the Orthopaedic Outpatient Department to receive handicapped certificate in Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Ho…

Goldenhar's syndrome is characterized by a combination of dermal epibulbar cysts, auricular appendices, malformation of ears, and vertebral anomalies. The average incidence ratio of Goldenhar's syndrome is estimated to be 1/5600, and the frequency of cardiovascular malformations of this syndrome is 5-58 per cent. Although the etiology of this disease is not fully understood, autosomal recessive or dominant inheritance is possible. The disease occurs as sporadic cases. Male:female ratio for the Goldenhar's syndrome is 2:1. A 72-day-old Goldenhar's syndrome case is reported who presented with mu

A 4-year-old boy presented with Goldenhar's syndrome, Duane's syndrome and bilateral papilledema. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain was unremarkable. On lumbar puncture, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure measured 36 cm H(2)O. CSF examination was normal. The diagnosis of pseudotumor cerebri was made, and treatment with acetazolamide was started. As the papilledema did not resolve, steroids were added to the treatment. Lumbar puncture was repeated after 1 month, and pressure was found to be 30 cm H(2)O. Because medical treatment was not effective in lowering the CSF pressure, optic ne

OBJECTIVE: To study the vertebral involvement of the cervical spine, in particular the stability of C1-C2, in children with proven Goldenhar's syndrome.
DESIGN: A case review.
SETTING: The Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Ottawa.
PATIENTS: Eight children who had a minimum of 2 out of 3 Goldenhar criteria plus other strong associations with the syndrome and for whom detailed radiographic spinal assessment, including flexion-extension views of the cervical spine and computed tomography of the congenital anomalies, were available.
OUTCOME MEASURES: Radiographic findings.
RESULTS: Seve

A bilobed posterior tongue is a rare malformation with few reported cases in the literature. This anomaly has not been demonstrated in patients with Goldenhar syndrome. We report a case of a 5-month-old child with the classic signs of Goldenhar syndrome and laryngomalacia with an incidental finding of a bilobed posterior tongue. Careful assessment and monitoring are crucial, especially in syndromic babies.

We present a case of a 13-year-old boy with clinical features of Goldenhar syndrome (hemifacial microsomia with malformed ears) and associated contralateral pulmonary aplasia. The patient did not have any associated respiratory symptoms. Pulmonary aplasia is an uncommon association of Goldenhar Syndrome. A case of contralateral pulmonary aplasia has been rarely reported in the literature to the best of our knowledge.

PURPOSE: Goldenhar syndrome is a multiorgan involvement affecting mainly the eyes, auricle, and oral cavity. METHOD. Case report.
RESULTS: A 7-month-old boy presenting with features of Goldenhar syndrome had ocular and auricular manifestations. There were no vertebral anomalies, but he had the unusual association of pre-axial polydactyly, which is not reported in the literature.
CONCLUSIONS: Pre-axial polydactyly should also be considered as an association of Goldenhar syndrome.

Goldenhar (GS) syndrome is a well-recognised developmental disorder involving first and second branchial arches and characterized by considerable phenotypic variability. The present study presents clinical data on the morphologic features, hearing, ophthalmologic, orthopaedic, neurological, cardiovascular, genitourinary and gastrointestinal evaluation of 17 Greek patients (one pair of monozygotic twins) aged 20 days to 23 years with the clinical diagnosis of GS and with a normal karyotype. The most consistent findings were auricular defects (94%), followed by facial (76%) and ocular anomalies

Three patients with oculoauriculovertebral dysplasia (Goldenhar) or hemifacial microsomia are presented. One had ocular, oral and auricular anomalies; another had vertebral malformations in addition to ocular and oro-auricular anomalies, and in a third only oro-auricular malformations were evident. The oculoauriculovertebral malformation complex is regarded as a variety of bilateral hemifacial microsomia, with the vertebral defects, the rate occipital encephalocele and cleft of lip and palate presumably representing midline interaction between the 2 fields. Hemifacial microsomia is a causally

BACKGROUND: Goldenhar syndrome is a clinically heterogeneous disorder defined by a rare combination of congenital anomalies-an eye abnormality, in addition to two of the following three: ear anomalies, mandibular malformations, and vertebral defects. Notably, children with Goldenhar syndrome present with a high incidence of cervical spine malformations.
CLINICAL CASE: In this report, we present an unusual case of a 15-year-old child with Goldenhar syndrome, who additionally presents with some clinical features of VACTERL syndrome. The patient was scheduled for mandibular distraction surgery w…
