Comparisons of the biomechanical characteristics of the swing planes for the driver and 7-iron during the golf swing.

OBJECTIVE: To compare swing plane biomechanics between the driver and 7-iron in golf and elucidate the kinematic and dynamic mechanisms underlying swing plane formation. METHODS: Sixteen male low-handicap golfers were recruited. A 3D motion capture system and two force plates were used to simultaneously record swing data for the driver and 7-iron. Swing plane angle, torso and pelvic angle, center of mass displacement, and ground reaction force (GRF) parameters were calculated. Statistical analyses were performed using paired t-tests, correlation analysis, and SPM {t}. RESULTS: The driver sho

Effects of two-step golf swing drills on rhythm and clubhead speed in competitive juniors.

Vertical and horizontal rhythms are crucial aspects of a dynamic golf swing, and the two-step swing drills (TSSD) were specifically designed to promote rhythmic unloading and loading of the legs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a TSSD training session on the swing rhythm and clubhead speed (CHS) among competitive junior golfers (3.1 ± 4.4 hcp). The driver swings (7 swings each) of 10 competitive junior golfers (aged 15-18) were captured before and after a TSSD session consisting of four stages (lasting less than 45 minutes). Post-TSSD training, there were significant i

Enhancing accuracy and convenience of golf swing tracking with a wrist-worn single inertial sensor.

In this study, we address two technical challenges to enhance golf swing trajectory accuracy using a wrist-worn inertial sensor: orientation estimation and drift error mitigation. We extrapolated consistent sensor orientation from specific address-phase signal segments and trained the estimation with a convolutional neural network. We then mitigated drift error by applying a constraint on wrist speed at the address, backswing top, and finish, and ensuring that the wrist's finish displacement aligns with a virtual circle on the 3D swing plane. To verify the proposed methods, we gathered data fr

Golf as a Physical Activity to Potentially Reduce the Risk of Falls in Older Adults with Parkinson's Disease.

Advanced age is associated with an increased risk for falls in aging adults. Older adults are also more likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD), with advanced age as the most significant risk factor. PD is a neurodegenerative disorder with four Cardinal motor symptoms: rigidity, bradykinesia, postural instability, and tremor. Thus, people (person)-with-Parkinson's disease (PwP) have an even greater risk of falling than non-disorder age-matched peers. Exercise is an activity requiring physical effort, typically carried out to sustain or improve overall health and fitness, and it lo

International consensus statement: methods for recording and reporting of epidemiological data on injuries and illnesses in golf.

Epidemiological studies of injury in elite and recreational golfers have lacked consistency in methods and definitions employed and this limits comparison of results across studies. In their sports-generic statement, the Consensus Group recruited by the IOC (2020) called for sport-specific consensus statements. On invitation by International Golf Federation, a group of international experts in sport and exercise medicine, golf research and sports injury/illness epidemiology was selected to prepare a golf-specific consensus statement. Methodological stages included literature review and initial

Traumatic tibia shaft fractures caused by the impact of a golf ball: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: As golf becomes increasingly popular, the number of injuries while playing golf also increases. We experienced two cases of traumatic tibia shaft fractures caused by the impact of a golf ball. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old Korean man and a 43-year-old Korean man were diagnosed as having linear tibia shaft fractures on the right leg and left leg, respectively. Both of them were treated with closed intramedullary nails. Calculated impact power of the golf ball at the time of tibia fracture was 3372 and 5825 N, respectively. Radiologic and clinical complications such as nonunion a

Return to Golf Rehabilitation Progression after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Using an Evidence-Based Foundation.

BACKGROUND: Golf is commonly regarded as a low-impact sport, yet the golf swing generates multiplanar loads across both knees. No validated return-to-golf protocol after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) has been published, and general return-to-sport timelines do not address golf-specific swing volume, club progression, lead- versus trail-knee demands, or return-to-course exposure. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical commentary is to synthesize the available golf-biomechanics and ACLR-rehabilitation evidence and present an evidence-informed, criteria-based progression from p

Efficacy of succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor nematicides fluopyram and cyclobutrifluram against Hoplolaimus galeatus in Golf Turf.

Following the cancellation of fernamiphos, lance nematodes (Hoplolaimus spp.) have become one of the most challenging plant-parasitic nematodes to manage in turfgrass systems. Succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor nematicides are among the most used nematode management tools on golf courses in the United States. Currently, there are two SDHI turfgrass nematicides registered in the United States: the fluopyram nematicide Indemnify, which was launched in 2016, and the cyclobutrifluram nematicide Trefinti, which was launched in 2025. The objective of this research was to compare the efficacy of these

Innovative composite tool use by human children: adapting the golf club task from Goffin's cockatoos.

We adapted a composite tool innovation task that had been solved by Goffin's cockatoos to be suitable for human children. Participants had to use a stick to push a ball onto a collapsible platform to release a reward. We tested a total of 204 participants: 187 children aged 4 to 8-years-old and 17 adults. There was a gradual increase in the proportion of children innovating composite tool use from 50% at 3-4 years to almost 90% at 7-8 years. 94% of adults innovated composite tool use. We replicated the innovation gap reported in previous studies: most children who failed succeeded following pr

Angular motion of the thorax during the golf swing: a comparison of two orientation angle sequences.

Orientation angles are commonly used to describe complex angular motions of the body. Selecting the most appropriate rotation sequence for a given segment's motion is crucial. The purpose of this study was to develop a set of generalisable, primary axis-centric sequence selection strategies and to compare the lean direction-lean-rotation (LDLR) sequence, selected for thoracic motion during golf driving based on the strategies, with the conventional rotation-bend-side bend (RBSB) sequence in assessing the level of inter-angle cross-talk. The RBSB method consistently revealed a higher level of i

The BEACH Protein LRBA Promotes the Localization of the Heterotrimeric G-protein Golf to Olfactory Cilia.

BEACH domain proteins are involved in membrane protein traffic and human diseases, but their molecular mechanisms are not understood. The BEACH protein LRBA has been implicated in immune response and cell proliferation, and human LRBA mutations cause severe immune deficiency. Here, we report a first functional and molecular phenotype outside the immune system of LRBA-knockout mice: compromised olfaction, manifesting in reduced electro-olfactogram response amplitude, impaired food-finding efficiency, and smaller olfactory bulbs. LRBA is prominently expressed in olfactory and vomeronasal chemose

Real-world applications in vision and attention: How to help patients find their (golf) balls again.

The loss of visual function is a common and debilitating effect of brain injury. Such effects include the inability to attend to the contralesional part of space (visual neglect) and loss of vision in part of the visual field in both eyes (homonymous visual field defects). The underlying mechanism of these functional deficits are varied which explains why no one intervention is effective in their treatment. In this chapter, we examine the cognitive neuroscience that underlies visual performance and attention with particular focus on what we know about visual exploration using search tasks in t

Peer pressure and thai amateur golfers' gambling on their games: the mediating effect of golf self-efficacy.

Our study hypothesizes that Thai amateur golfers gamble on their game because of peer pressure and their golf self-efficacy. To support our hypothesis, we conducted a study to examine the mediating effect of golf self-efficacy on the peer pressure-golf gambling relationship among 387 amateur golfers in Thailand. Peer pressure was operationally defined as fellow players' influence on the individual golfer to gamble; golf self-efficacy as the judgment of the golfer's skills to play golf; and golf gambling as the frequency and amounts of gambling. Regression analysis with bootstrapping was used t
