The bacteremic rate following transurethral instrumentation and the possibility of a serum bactericidal activity test to predict which patients that were at an increased risk of developing bacteremia was evaluated. Of 33 investigated patients, all elderly men, 14 underwent transurethral prostatic resection, 14 cystoscopy and 5 urethrotomy. None of the patients received prophylactic antibiotic treatment. Tsukamurella spp. are gram-positive rods that can be isolated from the environment in soil and moist areas. In rare instances, they are known to cause infections in immunocompromised hosts. An atypical lactic-acid producing gram positive rod Y6 strain was studied in this report, which was isolated form clinic sample of a patient with multiple bacterial synergistic gangrene, and could not be identified by routine method. Weissella confusa is a rare gram-positive, non-spore-forming, catalase-negative, gram-positive coccobacillus, and a pleomorphic gram-positive rod (GPR) often misidentified as Lactobacillus genus. It was first discovered in 1993 and is becoming identified due to the increasing use of DNA sequencing. The true incidence of this species has likely been underestimated and it has been implicated in poly-microbial bacteremia. We present an exceedingly rare case of its presentation found incidentally in a patient with a bio-prosthetic aortic and mitral valve that was successfully managed and treated.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the microbiology of primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction (PANDO) and its antimicrobial susceptibilities.
METHODS: Ninety-three patients (100 eyes) diagnosed with PANDO, categorized as acute, chronic dacryocystitis, or simple epiphora, were prospectively enrolled. Lacrimal sac contents were cultured for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and fungi. Cultured organisms were identified, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed for aerobic bacteria.

We report the results of a prospective study on 30 patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis who were seen at the University Hospital of Granada in 1987 and submitted to antimicrobial therapy. Patients with a positive prostate ultrasound scan and rectal examination, and those with prostatitis from Gram-negative rods evolved poorly. No significant difference was observed in patient response to therapy.

Perinatal listeric septicemia was diagnosed in a still-born Celebese black ape (Macaca niger). The disease was characterized by prominent focal hepatic necrosis and a diffuse, acute, fibrinopurulent placentitis.
