BACKGROUND: Granulomatous mastitis (GM) of the breast has long posed a clinical dilemma in terms of diagnosis and management. GM can range from acute to chronic inflammations, which will have treatment implications. Inflammation of the breast may clinically mimic breast carcinomas and pyogenic abscesses. Thus, in the absence of known etiology, such as trauma or breastfeeding, GM may be difficult to diagnose. Currently, the incidence of GM is 2.4 per 100,000 women and 0.37% of the total population in the US. The rarity of GM contributes to it being a poorly understood disease. It has no definit

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare inflammatory breast disease that can be clinically and radiologically mistaken for carcinoma. Although its etiology remains uncertain, potential associations with pregnancy, lactation, hormonal imbalances, autoimmunity, smoking, and various microorganisms have been suggested. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between IGM and oral health. We included 42 female patients diagnosed with IGM based on histopathological evaluations conducted between September 2018 and October 2023. The reference group consisted of 47 female patients with c

Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is an uncommon, chronic inflammatory breast disease, mostly idiopathic. Occasionally, the causative organism is isolated. It is characterized histologically by polymorph nuclear neutrophils' predominance and the absence of caseous necrosis. Idiopathic GM could be associated with other general conditions like autoimmune disorders, diabetes mellitus, and sarcoidosis. We report a case of a 41-year-old woman who presented with a left breast abscess of two weeks duration and a three-year history of intermittent attacks of painful breast swelling, which required multiple

AIM: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is an enigmatic inflammatory breast disorder. IGM responds to immunomodulatory treatment and may be associated with systemic manifestations such as arthritis and erythema nodosum. These patients are increasingly referred to rheumatologists for management, but IGM is rarely discussed in the rheumatology literature. The objective of this report is to familiarize rheumatologists with the treatment and systemic manifestations of IGM. We report here a case series of IGM at our institution, and a literature review of IGM treated with methotrexate (MTX).

BACKGROUND: Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare benign chronic inflammatory breast disease. GM presents as a heterogeneous illness with variable clinical presentations, and its diagnosis is usually made by exclusion. There are no guidelines for the treatment of GM. This manuscript describes the management of a patient with GM, initially unsuccessfully treated outside our clinic under a diagnosis of mastitis. The patient's history, physical examination, and needle biopsy flagged the patient's findings as nonmalignant; however, imaging studies indicated a tumor. Differential diagnosis became a

Idiopathic granulomatous lobular matitis (IGLM) is a rare non-specific inflammatory disease of the breast. Although IGLM is completely benign, it is easily confused with cancer due to progressive breast lump with firmly unilateral and discrete mass, nipple retraction and sinus formation. Patients with IGLM are usually associated with inflammation of the overlying skin. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of IGLM, treatment options and prognosis. From January 2010 to February 2015, 75 IGLM patients in our hospital were included, with an average age of 35.9 ± 10.0 (range

A 77-year-old female patient with a medical history significant for hypertension and epilepsy presented with right breast pain of 6-months duration. Examination revealed a hard sub-areola tender mass with irregular borders associated with mild right nipple retraction. Mammography showed a 2.2 x 2.4 cm stellate mass of the right breast. Ultrasound-guided core biopsies of the tumour were performed. Pathological examination revealed a grade II infiltrating ductal carcinoma. The patient underwent right radical mastectomy with homolateral axillary lymphadenectomy. Histological examination of the su

Objectives: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare benign breast disease in which cutaneous involvement is insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to evaluate the sonographic, clinical, and histopathological features of skin manifestations in IGM. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 138 women with biopsy-proven IGM who underwent breast and skin ultrasonography between 2023 and 2024. Clinical cutaneous findings were documented, and 14 patients with visible skin lesions underwent additional punch biopsy for histopathological evaluation. Sonographic and clinical features were s

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is mostly described as an autoimmune disease with higher prevalence among Middle Eastern childbearing-age women. This study aimed to evaluate the best treatment of choice in patients with resistant or recurrent IGM.
STUDY DESIGN: Patients with established recurrent or resistant IGM who were referred to the Breast Cancer Research Center from 2017 to 2020 were randomly assigned to either one of the following treatment groups: A (best supportive care), B (corticosteroids: prednisolone), and C (methotrexate and low-dose corticosteroids). RATIONALE: Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare inflammatory disease and the presentation mimics infectious mastitis or breast cancer. The disease usually develops at the unilateral breast in women with breast-feeding history at their child-bearing age. Systemic steroids had been proposed as the first-line treatment, the combination of surgery was also recommended for complicated disease. However, recurrence might still happen in some rare cases. Few studies have addressed the management of such difficult situations.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We report the case of a 33-year-old androgynous and nulli

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare benign breast disease which often mimics breast carcinoma both clinically and radiologically. Confirmation of diagnosis is only made by histopathological analysis. This study aims to define clinical and demographic features of IGM patients and discuss the results of treatment modalities.
METHODS: Forty patients with IGM who were assigned in Istanbul Medeniyet University General Surgery Clinic between March 2008 and October 2013 were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: Mean age was 39.07 ± 11.5. The most common complaint was breast

We describe three women with idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM), a rare, benign breast disease. It is a chronic inflammatory lesion of the breast and presents with the clinical symptoms of inflammation, breast mass and tumorous indurations and ulcerations of the skin. Clinical and radiological findings often mimic breast cancer. Histopathologic examination remains the gold standard for the diagnosis. It is a non-malignant entity but it may be both locally aggressive and recurrent. The treatment of choice is unclear, but surgical excision and adjunctive treatment with glucocorticoids or an

BACKGROUND: Cystic neutrophilic granulomatous mastitis (CNGM) is a rare inflammatory breast disease characterized by granulomatous inflammation with cystic spaces and neutrophilic infiltration. CNGM involving accessory breast tissue is exceptionally uncommon and has only rarely been reported. Due to its nonspecific clinical manifestations, CNGM may be misdiagnosed, potentially resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old woman presented with swelling and pain in the right axillary region. Ultrasonography revealed an inflammatory lesion within accessory breast

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of ultrasonography in distinguishing granulomatous mastitis (GM) from ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), and to assess its prognostic relevance in monitoring treatment response and predicting recurrence.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, we analyzed conventional B-mode ultrasound and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) features in 146 patients with histologically confirmed GM and 140 with DCIS. Key comparisons included: (1) B-mode characteristics (lesion morphology, posterior acoustic features, microcalcifications, vascular patter

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a noncancerous, chronic inflammatory disorder of breast with unknown causes, posing significant challenges to the quality of life due to its high refractoriness and local aggressiveness. The typical symptoms of this disease involve skin redness, a firm and tender breast mass and mastalgia; others may include swelling, fistula, abscess (often without fever), nipple retraction, and peau d'orange appearance. IGM often mimics breast abscesses or malignancies, particularly inflammatory breast cancer, and is characterized by absent standardized treatment op

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare benign breast condition with a course that is often rapidly progressive and slow to resolve. There is no consensus on management, especially during pregnancy and lactation. A 30-year-old at 33 weeks presented with mastalgia, induration and galactorrhoea in the left breast. There was no improvement with antibiotics. Initial workup was negative, and a core needle biopsy showed findings consistent with the diagnosis of IGM. She was treated with steroids antepartum. She was co-managed by rheumatology and her obstetrician/breastfeeding medicine spec
