We report a novel architecture of SnO(2) nanorod-planted graphite particles for an efficient Li ion storage material that can be prepared by a simple catalyst-assisted hydrothermal process. Rectangular-shaped SnO(2) nanorods are highly crystalline with a tetragonal rutile phase and distributed uniformly over the surface of micrometer-sized graphite particles. In addition, the size dimensions of grown SnO(2) nanorods can be controlled by varying the synthesis conditions. The diameter can be engineered to a sub-100 nm range, and the length can be controlled to up to several hundred nanometers. S

To efficiently generate electricity using bacteria in microbial fuel cells (MFCs), highly conductive noncorrosive materials are needed that have a high specific surface area (surface area per volume) and an open structure to avoid biofouling. Graphite brush anodes, consisting of graphite fibers wound around a conductive, but noncorrosive metal core, were examined for power production in cube (C-MFC) and bottle (B-MFC) air-cathode MFCs. Power production in C-MFCs containing brush electrodes at 9600 m2/m3 reactor volume reached a maximum power density of 2400 mW/m2 (normalized to the cathode pro

Stone cultural relics face persistent threats from weathering and erosion processes, whereas conventional restoration techniques frequently induce material incompatibility and secondary damage. Enzyme-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (EICP) offers a solution by forming protective layers, but free enzymes suffer from short lifespan and poor stability. Therefore, this study proposes a strategy that the α-carbonic anhydrase from Helicobacter pylori strain 26695 (HpCA) was immobilized on magnetic graphene oxide (mGO) to obtain the immobilized enzyme mGO@HpCA for stone relic restoration. mGO

Implant-associated infection remains a critical challenge for orthopedic implants, particularly for bioinert polyetheretherketone (PEEK), which also requires improved osteogenic support. Here, we developed a heterostructured surface on PEEK by coupling a graphite-like layer with a defect-rich TaOx nanoarray. The graphite-like layer promoted uniform TaOx nanoarray formation and may facilitate interfacial electronic coupling, while the TaOx nanoarray showed polarity-dependent and interface-limited charge-transport behavior in model electrical tests. Upon bacterial contact, the heterostructure pr

This manuscript presents the development of an electrochemical biosensor designed to detect K-562 chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cells. The biosensor was made of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), functionalized with -OH and -COOH groups by surface etching with strong acids, and subsequently coated with modified titanium dioxide (TiO2-m). TiO2-m is TiO2 modified during its synthesis process using carbon nanotubes functionalized with -OH and -COOH groups. These changes improve the electron transfer kinetics and physicochemical properties of the electrode surface. TiO2-m improves the sen

Graphite-based adsorbents provide a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional metal-based adsorbents, yet their performance in removing pharmaceutical pollutants remains underexplored. In this study, a phenylboronic acid-functionalized magnetic expanded graphite (EG/Fe3O4-PBA) nanocomposite was developed as a novel adsorbent for the treatment of acetaminophen (ACT)-contaminated hospital wastewater. The functionalization endowed the composite with a porous structure, rapid magnetic separation, and strong affinity toward ACT molecules. The experiments were designed using a central

This study presents an innovative temperature sensor based on a thermistor nanocomposite of graphite (Gt) and polystyrene (PS). The sensor exhibited notable thermal stability and film integrity, offering two distinct linear response regions within the tested temperature range of -10 to 60 °C. It demonstrated a sensitivity of 0.125% °C-1 between -10 and 10 °C, followed by another linear response with a sensitivity of 0.41% °C-1 from 20 to 60 °C. Furthermore, it exhibited a response/recovery time of 0.97/1.3 min at a heating/cooling rate of 60 °C min-1. The sensor maintained minimal baseline dri

Using the powder metallurgy process, this study focused on the impact of varying concentrations of SiC and graphite additions on microstructural, tribomechanical, and thermophysical properties. The resulting composites had a high relative density (>90%). The reinforcement particles exhibited a homogeneous distribution in the copper matrix. No compound developed between the reinforcing and copper phases. There was good interfacial bonding between the graphite and SiC structures. The composites' overall structural hardness increased by 1.04 to 1.25 times. From 1.13 to 1.40 times, the empirical e

Vast quantities of anode graphite from waste lithium ion batteries (LIBs), as a type of underrated urban mine, has enormous potential to be exploited for resource recovery. Herein, we propose a benign process integrating low-temperature pyrolysis and mechanochemical techniques to upcycle spent graphite (SG) from end-of-life LIBs. Pyrolysis at 500 °C leads to about 82.2 % PVDF dissociation in thermal treated graphite (TG). Solid-phase exfoliation via ball milling assisted by urea successfully produces abundant graphite flakes and a small amount of monolayer graphene nanosheet at the edge of mec

Ecosystems and environments are impacted by atmospheric pollution, which has significant effects on human health and climate. For these reasons, devices for developing portable and low-cost monitoring systems are required to assess human exposure during daily life. In the last decade, the advancements of 3D printing technology have pushed researchers to exploit, in different fields of applications, the advantages offered, such as rapid prototyping and low-cost replication of complex sample treatment devices. In this work, we present the fabrication and testing of 3D printed cartridges based on

Graphite sheet (GS) electrodes are flexible and versatile substrates for sensing electrochemical; however, their use has been limited to incorporate (bio)chemical modifiers. Herein, we demonstrated that a cold (low temperature) CO2 plasma treatment of GS electrodes provides a substantial improvement of the electrochemical activity of these electrodes due to the increased structural defects on the GS surface as revealed by Raman spectroscopy (ID/IG ratio), and scanning electron microscopy images. XPS analyses confirmed the formation of oxygenated functional groups at the GS surface after the pl

The development of a disposable electrochemical paper-based analytical device (ePAD) is described using a novel formulation of conductive ink that combines graphite powder, polyester resin, and acetone. As a proof of concept, the proposed sensor was utilized for paracetamol (PAR) sensing. The introduced ink was characterized via morphological, structural, and electrochemical analysis, and the results demonstrated appreciable analytical performance. The proposed ePAD provided linear behavior (R2 = 0.99) in the concentration range between 1 and 60 µmol L-1, a limit of detection of 0.2 µmol L-1,

Developing highly efficient bifunctional catalysts for the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction (ORR/OER) can open possibilities for future zinc air batteries (ZABs). Herein, cost-effective and highly conductive few-layer ferric and nickel chloride co-intercalated graphite intercalation compounds (FeCl3 -NiCl2 -GIC) are designed as bifunctional oxygen catalysts for ZAB. The optimized few-layer FeCl3 -NiCl2 -GIC catalyst exhibits a small overpotential of 276 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for the OER and achieves a high onset potential of 0.89 V for the ORR. The theoretical analysis demonstrates th

The use and abuse of prescription and illicit drugs are on the rise worldwide and as a result residue of these drugs and their metabolites are continually being disposed into the environment through sewage system and other means. Therefore, this paper reports on the development of a cost-effective, simple and sensitive approach that involved the fabrication of an electrochemical sensor from exfoliated graphite (EG) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the detection of selected psychoactive drugs in water. The fabricated electrochemical sensor was characterized using scanning electron microscopy

We report a facile and low-cost method to directly exfoliate graphite powders into large-size, high-quality, and solution-dispersible few-layer graphene sheets. In this method, aqueous mixtures of graphite and inorganic salts such as NaCl and CuCl2 are stirred, and subsequently dried by evaporation. Finally, the mixture powders are dispersed into an orthogonal organic solvent solution of the salt by low-power and short-time ultrasonication, which exfoliates graphite into few-layer graphene sheets. We find that the as-made graphene sheets contain little oxygen, and 86% of them are 1-5 layers wi

The possibility that graphite electrodes can serve as the direct electron donor for microbially catalyzed reductive dechlorination was investigated with Geobacter lovleyi. In an initial evaluation of whether G. lovleyi could interact electronically with graphite electrodes, cells were provided with acetate as the electron donor and an electrode as the sole electron acceptor. Current was produced at levels that were ca. 10-fold lower than those previously reported for Geobacter sulfurreducens under similar conditions, and G. lovleyi anode biofilms were correspondingly thinner. When an electrode

This paper proposed a method for the determination of inorganic tin and organotin species. Total tin contents can be directly detected by zirconium-coated graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, while the organotin was detected by hydride generation combined with solvent extraction and the difference between the total tin and organotin was inorganic tin. The detection limits were 58 pg and 27 pg for organotin and inorganic tin, respectively. The relative standard deviations of this procedure, were 2.13% and 2.04%, respectively. Several water samples were analyzed by this method. The rec

Stable thin films made from dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) with incorporated hemoglobin (Hb) on pyrolytic graphite (PG) electrodes were characterized by electrochemical and other techniques. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) of Hb-DMPC films showed a pair of well-defined and nearly reversible peaks at about -0.27 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE) at pH 5.5, characteristic of Hb heme Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox couple. The electron transfer between Hb and PG electrodes was greatly facilitated in DMPC films. Apparent heterogeneous rate constants (ks) were estimated by fitting square wave voltammogr

We report a case of an 8-year-old boy who presented with an intraocular foreign body composed of graphite pencil lead. The patient had been accidentally poked in the right eye with a graphite pencil. Primary care consisted of corneal suturing and lens extraction. Two pieces of the pencil lead remained in the vitreous cavity following surgery, and 2 days later the patient developed endophthalmitis. Pars plana vitrectomy was performed immediately and the intraocular foreign bodies were removed through the scleral wound. Cultures of the vitreous fluid revealed no bacterial organisms. X-ray fluoro
