Where, When, and How Much Should We Pay for Wind Erosion Prevention Services of the Largest Chinese Grassland Reserve?

The large-scale and cross-regional payment for ecosystem services (PES) contributes positively to ecology-economy balance and thus helps prevent environmental challenges such as "sand storm". However, existing PES programs often overlook the connection between service-providing areas (SPAs) and service-benefiting areas (SBAs). Here, we developed an interregional PES framework based on the theory of ecosystem services flow and applied it to the largest Chinese grassland nature reserve, Xilingol Prairie, to quantitatively identify SPAs, SBAs, and flow paths of the ecosystem wind erosion preventi

Characterizing grassland fire activity in the Flint Hills region and air quality using satellite and routine surface monitor data.

Prescribed grassland fires in the Flint Hills region of central Kansas and northern Oklahoma are a common tool for land management. Local to regional scale impacts on air quality from grassland fires in this region are not well understood, which is important as these types of prescribed fires may increase in the future to preserve broader areas of native grasses in the central U.S. Routine air quality and deposition measurements from sites in and near the Flint Hills were examined for coincident increases during periods of increased prescribed grassland fires. Prescribed fire activity in this

Dry flue gas desulfurization by-product application effects on plant uptake and soil storage changes in a managed grassland.

Environmental regulations mandate that sulfur dioxide (SO2) be removed from the flue gases of coal-fired power plants, which results in the generation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by-products. These FGD by-products may be a viable soil amendment, but the large amounts of trace elements contained in FGD by-products are potentially concerning. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of land application of a high-Ca dry FGD (DFGD) by-product on trace elements in aboveground biomass and soil. A high-Ca DFGD by-product was applied once at a rate of 9 Mg ha-1 on May 18, 2015 to

Extreme Drought and Herbivory Redirect Recently Assimilated Carbon From Storage to Rapid Turnover Pathways in Grasslands.

Environmental stresses can alter ecosystem carbon cycling by changing both carbon uptake and the subsequent allocation of assimilated carbon among plant, soil and consumer pools. However, how multiple stressors influence the fate of recently assimilated carbon remains poorly understood. We combined 13C pulse labelling with manipulations of extreme drought, grasshopper herbivory and plant functional composition in a semi-arid grassland of Inner Mongolia, China, to examine how climatic and trophic stresses regulate carbon allocation and turnover. Extreme drought shifted recently assimilated carb

Resource translocation facilitates restoration of saline-alkali degraded grasslands by altering resource acquisition of dominant species.

Clonal functional traits such as physiological integration (resource translocation between connected individuals) can promote the performance of clonal plants and modify their environments. Such performance promotion of dominant clonal plants may help restore degraded communities. To test this, we conducted one three-year field experiment and two complementary pot experiments to assess the ecological consequences of physiological integration of Leymus chinensis, at both community and individual levels, in a saline-alkali degraded grassland in northeastern China. Field-based results showed that

Assessing Air Quality and Health Benefits of Enhanced Management of Forests, Shrublands, and Grasslands Against Wildfires in California.

California wildfires have grown increasingly frequent and intense over recent decades, raising serious public health concerns. In response, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2022 Scoping Plan outlines land management strategies to reduce wildfire risk and associated emissions under various climate change scenarios. This study evaluates the health benefits of CARB's official mitigation pathway, the S3 scenario, compared to a business-as-usual approach, using three global climate models (GCMs) and three future time slices. We apply the GEOS-Chem model to estimate fire-induced PM2.5 conce

Acidification with acetic or sulfuric acid: Effects on NH3 and N2O emission from cattle and pig slurry applied to grassland.

Ammonia (NH₃) emissions from slurry application contribute to air pollution, ecosystem acidification and nitrogen loss, while nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions contribute to climate change. Sulfuric acid is commonly used to reduce NH₃ emissions, but safety concerns and sulfur accumulation in soil have prompted interest in alternatives such as acetic acid. We compared the effects of both acids on NH₃ and N₂O emissions following cattle and pig slurry application to grassland in Denmark. Sulfuric acid was added at 3.0 and 2.9 kg t-1 to cattle and pig slurry, respectively; corresponding acetic acid do

Effects of Climatic Factors and Disturbance on Plant Above-Ground Biomass and Species Diversity of Chinese Grasslands: A Meta-Analysis.

Grassland ecosystems provide substantial social and cultural value but are vulnerable to climate change and human activities. Large-scale evidence on how climate and disturbance jointly affect above-ground biomass (AGB), species richness, and their relationship remains limited. We conducted a meta-analysis by compiling and standardizing plot-level observations from 226 studies of Chinese grasslands. The final database contained 1192 records from 378 sites surveyed between 1982 and 2019, with matched climatic variables (mean annual temperature, annual precipitation, and radiation) and disturban

The Negative Legacy Effect of Extreme Drought on Soil Respiration Is Unaffected by Post-Drought Precipitation Regime in a Temperate Grassland.

Soil respiration, the main ecosystem process that produces carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, is sensitive to extreme climatic events. The immediate, usually negative effect of droughts on soil respiration has often been observed, but the recovery of soil respiration following drought is rarely documented. Soil respiration can be reduced beyond the drought year if drought-induced changes suppress soil activity. Alternatively, reduction in soil respiration may be overcompensated in the subsequent years due to increased substrate input and soil moisture, resulting from plant dieback during drou

Plant composition changes in a small-scale community have a large effect on the performance of an economically important grassland pest.

BACKGROUND: The grasshopper Oedaleus asiaticus Bey-Bienko (Acrididae: Oedipodinae) is a dominant and economically important pest that is widely distributed across the Mongolian plateau. This herbivore pest causes major damage to the grassland of the Inner Mongolian steppe in China. The population dynamics of herbivore pests is affected by grassland management practices (e.g., mowing and heavy livestock grazing) that alter plant community structures and stoichiometric characteristics. For example, O. asiaticus outbreak is closely associated with plant preference changes caused by nitrogen loss

Gross primary production responses to warming, elevated CO2 , and irrigation: quantifying the drivers of ecosystem physiology in a semiarid grassland.

Determining whether the terrestrial biosphere will be a source or sink of carbon (C) under a future climate of elevated CO2 (eCO2 ) and warming requires accurate quantification of gross primary production (GPP), the largest flux of C in the global C cycle. We evaluated 6 years (2007-2012) of flux-derived GPP data from the Prairie Heating and CO2 Enrichment (PHACE) experiment, situated in a grassland in Wyoming, USA. The GPP data were used to calibrate a light response model whose basic formulation has been successfully used in a variety of ecosystems. The model was extended by modeling maximum

Soil fertilization leads to a decline in between-samples variability of microbial community δ13C profiles in a grassland fertilization experiment.

Gas chromatography combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS) was used to measure the (13)C/(12)C ratios of PLFAs at natural abundance levels from a temperate grassland nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) factorial fertilization experiment in northern Greece. In each plot two rhizosphere samples were derived centred around individual Agrostis capillaris and Prunella vulgaris plants. It was hypothesized that the isotopic signal of microbes that preferentially feed on recalcitrant litter such as fungi would be modified by fertilization more strongly than that of opportunistic microbes us

Root production and turnover in an upland grassland subjected to artificial soil warming respond to radiation flux and nutrients, not temperature.

Root demographic processes (birth and death) were measured using minirhizotrons in the soil warming experiments at the summit of Great Dun Fell, United Kingdom (845 m). The soil warming treatment raised soil temperature at 2 cm depth by nearly 3°C. The first experiment ran for 6 months (1994), the second for 18 (1995-1996). In both experiments, heating increased death rates for roots, but birth rates were not significantly increased in the first experiment. The lack of stimulation of death rate in 1996 is probably an artefact, caused by completion of measurements in late summer of 1996, before

Two-Decade Nitrogen and Water Additions Stimulate Temperate Grassland Carbon Fluxes through Plant Trait Shifts and Soil Moisture Enhancement.

Atmospheric nitrogen deposition and increased precipitation are key drivers of grassland carbon cycling; however, their long-term interactive effects and mechanisms remain poorly understood. Based on a 20 year field experiment with sustained nitrogen (10 g N m-2 yr-1) and precipitation (+∼50% precipitation) addition in a temperate grassland in northern China, we found that both nitrogen deposition and precipitation addition significantly enhanced net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), ecosystem respiration (ER), and gross ecosystem productivity (GEP), with additive effects of nitrogen and water add

Targeting the 20E-responsive miR-2788-Treh1 axis disrupts chitin biosynthesis and ovarian development in the grassland pest Galeruca daurica.

BACKGROUND: 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) coordinates insect reproductive development through extensive metabolic reprogramming. However, the post-transcriptional mechanisms linking hormonal signaling to carbohydrate metabolism during reproductive maturation remain poorly understood in insect pests. RESULTS: We identified a novel 20E-miR-2788-Treh1 regulatory axis in Galeruca daurica. Developmental profiling revealed an inverse relationship between miR-2788 and Treh1 expression. Overexpression of miR-2788 or RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated silencing of Treh1 caused trehalose accumulation, reduced

Changes in blowfly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) wing morphology during succession in rat carcasses across forest and grassland habitats in South Brazil.

Succession is one of the most extensively studied ecological phenomena, yet debates persist about the importance of dispersal and external factors in driving this process. We aimed to quantify the influence of these factors by investigating how wing-related traits evolve across succession of blowfly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) communities in South Brazil. Rat carrion was placed in both forest and grassland habitats, and the associated blowfly communities were documented throughout the decomposition process. Using morphometric analysis, we measured wing and thorax traits and assessed trait changes

Can permanent grassland soils with elevated organic carbon buffer negative effects of more persistent precipitation regimes on forage grass performance?

Agricultural practices enhancing soil organic carbon (SOC) show potential to buffer negative effects of climate change on forage grass performance. We tested this by subjecting five forage grass varieties differing in fodder quality and drought/flooding resistance to increased persistence in summer precipitation regimes (PR) across sandy and sandy-loam soils from either permanent (high SOC) or temporary grasslands (low SOC) in adjacent parcels. Over the course of two consecutive summers, monoculture mesocosms were subjected to rainy/dry weather alternation either every 3 days or every 30 days,

Drought Eliminates the Difference in Root Trait Plasticity and Mycorrhizal Responsiveness of Two Semiarid Grassland Species with Contrasting Root System.

Root traits and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are important in determining the access of plants to soil resources. However, whether plants with different root systems (i.e., taproot vs. fibrous-root) exhibit different root trait plasticity and mycorrhizal responsiveness under drought remains largely unexplored. Tap-rooted Lespedeza davurica and fibrous-rooted Stipa bungeana were grown in monocultures in sterilized and live soils, followed by a drought treatment. Biomass, root traits, root colonization by AM fungi, and nutrient availability were evaluated. Drought decreased biomass and root
