Vestibulo-cerebellar disease impairs the central representation of self-orientation.

Transformation of head-fixed otolith signals into a space-fixed frame of reference is essential for perception of self-orientation and ocular motor control. In monkeys the nodulus and ventral uvula of the vestibulo-cerebellum facilitate this transformation by computing an internal estimate of direction of gravity. These experimental findings motivated the hypothesis that degeneration of the vestibulo-cerebellum in humans alter perceptual and ocular motor functions that rely on accurate estimates of gravity, such as subjective visual vertical (SVV), static ocular counterroll (OCR), and gravity-

Further studies of effects of sodium aluminosilicate on egg shell quality.

Five experiments were conducted using 36 dietary treatments to compare chloride salts and HCl as chemical sources of Cl for the adjustment of dietary Cl when using sodium aluminosilicate (SAS), to compare SAS to natural zeolites (clinoptilolite and mordenite), and to determine the appropriate level of dietary SAS for optimum egg specific gravity. The methods of Na and Cl correction used in the various treatments included altering the levels of NaCl, calcium chloride (CaCl2), potassium chloride (KCl), magnesium chloride (MgCl2), iron chloride (FeCl3), or hydrochloric acid (HCl). [Immunologic aspects of acute viral hepatitis at different ages].

Patients of different age, among them 103 with viral hepatitis B and 120 with viral hepatitis A, were examined for immunoregulatory subpopulations of T lymphocytes and for the effects of HBsAg preparations and human liver-specific lipoprotein (LSL) on the blood E-RFC content. The patients of both mature and elderly age with viral hepatis A demonstrated insignificant, readily reversible alterations in cellular immunity. The patients with viral hepatitis B, particularly elderly ones, showed an evident tendency toward the predominance of the suppressor effects, which correlated with the disease g

Gene expression in rat vestibular and reticular structures during and after space flight.

Space flight produces profound changes of neuronal activity in the mammalian vestibular and reticular systems, affecting postural and motor functions. These changes are compensated over time by plastic alterations in the brain. Immediate early genes (IEGs) are useful indicators of both activity changes and neuronal plasticity. We studied the expression of two IEG protein products [Fos and Fos-related antigens (FRAs)] with different cell persistence times (hours and days, respectively) to identify brainstem vestibular and reticular structures involved in adaptation to microgravity and readaptat

Rehabilitation assisted by Space technology-A SAHC approach in immobilized patients-A case of stroke.

Introduction: The idea behind the presentation of this case relates to utilizing space technology in earth applications with mutual benefit for both patients confined to bed and astronauts. Deconditioning and the progressiveness of skeletal muscle loss in the absence of adequate gravity stimulus have been of physiological concern. A robust countermeasure to muscle disuse is still a challenge for both immobilized patients and astronauts in long duration space missions. Researchers in the space medicine field concluded that artificial gravity (AG) produced by short-radius centrifugation on a pas

[Value of extracorporeal radioimmunoassay in children with nephrotic syndrome].

Extracorporeal radioimmune techniques were employed to study gonadotropic and sex hormones renin and beta 2-microglobulin in patients with nephrotic glomerulonephritis. The hypophyseal and gonadal system showed alterations which were dependent on the disease gravity. The level of renin and beta 2-microglobulin correlated first of all with renal function.

Positional nystagmus in association with macroglobulinemia.

Summary--Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia is a malignant lymphoproliferative disease associated with a monoclonal macroglobulinemia. Most explanations of the cochlear and vestibular symptoms in this disease have dealt with vascular thrombotic or hemorrhagic phenomena. Five patients currently being treated for macroglobulinemia have been reviewed. Three patients gave a history of periodic dizziness and underwent extensive neuro-otologic examination. The results suggestsed an alternate mechanism for the pathophysiology of the vestibular disturbance in macroglobulinemia. Vestibular examination by

Effect of Exercise on Coronary Hemodynamics Under the Earth's Gravity and Microgravity Conditions: A CFD Study.

Exposure to microgravity affects the cardiovascular system and fluid distribution in the vasculature system of the human body depending on the short term or long term exposure. Literature suggests that in the initial few days in the microgravity environment, a short term exposure, the cardiac output and plasma volume are altered. Gradually, after about a week of long exposure to the microgravity environment, these parameters return to the same levels as those under the Earth's gravity. In this computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study, we investigate the effect of microgravity environment on co

Spaceflight regulates ryanodine receptor subtype 1 in portal vein myocytes in the opposite way of hypertension.

Gravity has a structural role for living systems. Tissue development, architecture, and organization are modified when the gravity vector is changed. In particular, microgravity induces a redistribution of blood volume and thus pressure in the astronaut body, abolishing an upright blood pressure gradient, inducing orthostatic hypotension. The present study was designed to investigate whether isolated vascular smooth muscle cells are directly sensitive to altered gravitational forces and, second, whether sustained blood pressure changes act on the same molecular target. Exposure to microgravity

Gravity-driven liquid-liquid encapsulation: A new paradigm in encapsulation for low-surface-tension drops.

HYPOTHESIS: The encapsulation of low-surface-tension (core) liquids in an immiscible continuous phase (shell) is of fundamental and practical importance in interfacial engineering because of its broad applications. Existing impact-driven liquid-liquid encapsulation (LLE) relies on impact inertia to overcome the interfacial energy barrier. However, the huge interfacial deformation frequently causes air entrapment, core liquid loss, and evaporation of volatile liquids. We hypothesize that replacing impulsive impact with gradual gravitational loading of core liquid very close to the interfacial s

The stomach in liver cirrhosis. Endoscopic, morphological, and clinical correlations.

The stomachs of cirrhotic patients are frequently subject to a number of alterations, detectable by endoscopy, the presence of which indicates a disturbance in the mucosa. Several investigators believe that portal hypertension plays an etiopathogenetic role. Three groups of subjects were studied prospectively: 83 cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension, 53 cirrhotic patients without portal hypertension, and 135 control subjects. Snake skin, scarlatina rash, and petechia were the most frequent endoscopic findings in the cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension (P less than 0.001); these

Adaptive changes in the angular VOR: duration of gain changes and lack of effect of nodulo-uvulectomy.

Alterations in the gain of the vertical angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) are dependent on the head position in which the gain changes were produced. We determined how long gravity-dependent gain changes last in monkeys after four hours of adaptation, and whether the adaptation is mediated through the nodulus and uvula of the vestibulocerebellum. Vertical VOR gains were adaptively modified by rotation about an interaural axis, in phase or out of phase with the visual surround. Vertical VOR gains were modified with the animals in one of three orientations: upright, left-side down, or right-

Changes of iron dynamics in the duodenum and bone marrow under partial gravity condition in mice.

BACKGROUND: With the advancement of the space age, research on physiological changes during long-term space missions has become increasingly important. Spaceflight-induced anemia, along with muscle and bone loss, is a significant concern for astronaut health, potentially disrupting iron metabolism and absorption. However, the mechanisms underlying intestinal iron absorption in space remain unclear. AIM: This study investigated iron dynamics in the duodenum and bone marrow of mice exposed to partial gravity (PG) to assess potential alterations in iron absorption and storage. METHODS: Using sa

Learning Gravity: An Innately Constrained Bayesian Model of Human Vestibular Development.

The vestibular apparatus is substantially organized before birth, whereas human equilibrium emerges only gradually through head control, sitting, standing, and independent walking. We propose an Innately Constrained Bayesian Model of Vestibular Development in which a phylogenetically shaped architecture constrains an initial model space; prenatal and postnatal experience calibrate internal models of self-motion and gravity; and developmentally gated plasticity modulates the rate of updating. We explicitly distinguish established evidence from interpretations and model-derived hypotheses. Recen

Epigenetics in Space: The Dynamic Cellular Response.

Space exploration is moving toward the next milestone: space colonization. The risks for human health, associated to the permanence in the space, are already object of studies by several experiments both in orbit and, under simulated space conditions, on hearth. Now, these assessments will need to be extended over the increased permanence, in view of the stable life on other planets. It is well known that the environmental conditions present in the space, primarily related to the altered gravity, introduce a physical stress and the lack of a fundamental bond that contributes to the spatial org

Prognosis of contraversive pushing.

Stroke patients with 'pusher syndrome' actively push away from the non-hemiparetic side leading to a loss of postural balance and falling towards the paralysed side. The behaviour is due to an altered perception of the body's orientation in relation to gravity. Here, we studied the prognosis of the disorder. Twelve pusher patients first investigated immediately after the stroke were re-examined 6 months later. Pusher symptoms had nearly completely recovered. The aim for physiotherapy of patients with contraversive pushing thus is to shorten the period of necessary treatment and enable earlier

Shy-Drager syndrome with abnormal circadian rhythm of plasma antidiuretic hormone secretion and urinary excretion.

A 67-year-old patient with Shy-Drager syndrome (SDS), exhibited nocturnal polyuria associated with abnormal circadian rhythm of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) secretion and nocturnal polyuria. The patient excreted a larger volume of urine during the nighttime compared to that in the daytime. The specific gravity of urine at night was lower than that during the day. In contrast to normal circadian rhythm of ADH, the patient's plasma concentration of ADH was increased in the daytime. The present study raised the possibility that an altered circadian rhythm of plasma ADH secretion might be considered

Unconstrained three-dimensional reaching in rhesus monkeys.

To better understand normative behavior for quantitative evaluation of motor recovery after injury, we studied arm movements by non-injured rhesus monkeys during a food-retrieval task. While seated, monkeys reached, grasped, and retrieved food items. We recorded three-dimensional kinematics and muscle activity, and used inverse dynamics to calculate joint moments due to gravity, segmental interactions, and to the muscles and tissues of the arm. Endpoint paths showed curvature in three dimensions, suggesting that maintaining straight paths was not an important constraint. Joint moments were dom

Premature closure of prosthetic mitral valves as a consequence of gravity.

To determine the influence of gravity on premature closure of prosthetic mitral valves, we studied 17 patients in whom this phenomenon had been observed during routine examination. All patients were in atrial fibrillation and none had aortic incompetence. Patients were studied in multiple positions by means of simultaneous echocardiography, phonocardiography, and cinefluoroscopy. In all patients premature closure was observed when the atrial side of the prosthesis was below the ventricular side, resulting in a downward motion of the occluder inside the valve cage. When patients were studied in

[Cardiac manifestations in leptospirosis. Apropos of 15 cases observed in New Caledonia].

The authors report the cardiovascular manifestations observed in 15 cases of severe leptospirosis in New Caledonia. Cardiovascular collapse is frequent. Electrocardiographic alterations consist mainly of arrhythmia secondary to atrial fibrillation and repolarisation disorders. A picture of pseudo-pericarditis has also been observed. These cardiac manifestations represent a factor of gravity when associated with multi-visceral manifestations which control the prognosis.
