Abnormalities in cortical gray matter density in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a chronic condition with a strong impact on patients' affective, cognitive and social functioning. Neuroimaging techniques offer invaluable tools to understand the biological substrate of the disease. We aimed to investigate gray matter alterations over the whole cortex in a group of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) patients compared to healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Magnetic resonance-based cortical pattern matching was used to assess cortical gray matter density (GMD) in 26 BPD patients and in their age- and sex-matched HC (age: 38

Gray matter volume reduction reflects chronic pain in trigeminal neuralgia.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is supposedly caused by an ectatic blood vessel affecting the trigeminal nerve at the root entry zone of the brain stem. Recent evidence suggests an additional central component within trigeminal pain-processing in the pathophysiology of TN. Therefore, we aimed to identify specific brain regions possibly associated with the development or maintenance of TN using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Sixty patients with classical TN were compared to 49 healthy controls. Eighteen patients had TN with concomitant constant facial pain, a conditio

Psychotic symptoms and gray matter deficits in clinical pediatric populations.

BACKGROUND: Neuroanatomic studies have not yet addressed how subtle phenotypic distinctions in psychosis alter the underlying brain changes, and whether there is evidence for psychosis as a dimensional construct. We explored the relationship of cortical GM thickness to psychotic phenotypes in children. METHODS: Cross-sectional comparison of anatomic brain imaging between patients referred as childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS) but ruled out after a drug free inpatient observation. Groups included: patients with no evidence of psychosis (n=22) after drug free observation, patients with psychos

Abnormal structural and functional brain connectivity in gray matter heterotopia.

PURPOSE: Periventricular nodular heterotopia (PNH) is a malformation of cortical development associated with epilepsy and dyslexia. Evidence suggests that heterotopic gray matter can be functional in brain malformations and that connectivity abnormalities may be important in these disorders. We hypothesized that nodular heterotopia develop abnormal connections and systematically investigated the structural and functional connectivity of heterotopia in patients with PNH. METHODS: Eleven patients were studied using diffusion tensor tractography and resting-state functional connectivity MRI with

Gray matter volume decrements in preterm children with periventricular leukomalacia.

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) is the prototypic lesion in the encephalopathy of prematurity. Although PVL is identified by targeting cerebral white matter (WM), neuropathological and MRI studies document gray matter (GM) loss in cortical and subcortical structures. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of GM changes in children with a history of premature birth and PVL. Voxel-based morphometry was used to examine regional GM abnormalities in 22 children with a history of preterm birth and PVL. Preterms with PVL were compared with 22 terms and 14 preterms without PVL of similar

Gray matter in amnestic mild cognitive impairment: voxel-based morphometry.

Multiple regression voxel-based morphometry analyses were used to examine the relationship between regional gray matter volumes and neurocognitive performance in 10 patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment and 20 healthy age-matched controls. Cognitive functioning was assessed with seven standardized neuropsychological tests. Patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment exhibited impaired cognitive performance (on the Mini Mental State Examination, tests of verbal fluency, verbal and spatial learning and memory, and visual-motor abilities) and reduced gray matter volume in the righ

Striatal gray matter loss in Huntington's disease is leftward biased.

In Huntington's disease (HD), the distribution of pathological changes throughout the brain is incompletely understood. Some studies have identified leftward-biased lateralization, whereas others did not. We performed magnetic resonance imaging and a voxel-based asymmetry analysis in 44 right-handed HD gene carriers (presymptomatic, n = 5; stage I, n = 28; stage II, n = 11) and 44 right-handed healthy controls. The group comparison revealed leftward-biased gray matter loss in the striatum. Further analyses showed no indication of asymmetry in presymptomatic HD patients but an increase in asymm

Whole-brain voxel-based statistical analysis of gray matter and white matter in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Volumetric MRI studies based on manual labeling of selected anatomical structures have provided in vivo evidence that brain abnormalities associated with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) extend beyond the hippocampus. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) is a fully automated image analysis technique allowing identification of regional differences in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) between groups of subjects without a prior region of interest. The purpose of this study was to determine whole-brain GM and WM changes in TLE and to investigate the relationship between these abnormalities and clinical

Differentiation of gray matter and white matter perfusion in patients with unilateral internal carotid artery occlusion.

In this study, we investigated differences between gray matter and white matter perfusion in patients with a unilateral occlusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) with dynamic susceptibility contrast. Seventeen patients and 17 control subjects were studied, using T2*-weighted gradient echo acquisition. Gray and white matter regions were obtained by segmentation of inversion recovery MRI. Lesions were excluded by segmentation of T2-weighted MRI. In the symptomatic hemisphere, cerebral blood volume was increased in white matter (P < .05) but not in gray matter. No cerebral blood flow changes

Gray matter atrophy and white matter lesions burden in delayed cognitive decline following carbon monoxide poisoning.

Gray matter (GM) atrophy and white matter (WM) lesions may contribute to cognitive decline in patients with delayed neurological sequelae (DNS) after carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. However, there is currently a lack of evidence supporting this relationship. This study aimed to investigate the volume of GM, cortical thickness, and burden of WM lesions in 33 DNS patients with dementia, 24 DNS patients with mild cognitive impairment, and 51 healthy controls. Various methods, including voxel-based, deformation-based, surface-based, and atlas-based analyses, were used to examine GM structures. Fur

Fusion analysis of gray matter and white matter in bipolar disorder by multimodal CCA-joint ICA.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) patients show morphological abnormalities in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM), which can be revealed by structure MRI (sMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) respectively. However, previous studies on BD mainly relied on separated analysis of single neuroimaging modality, and it remains unclear how GM and WM covary to the abnormal brain structures of BD patients. METHODS: We recorded multimodal sMRI-DTI data of 35 BD patients and 30 healthy controls (HC) and used multimodal canonical component analysis and joint independent component analysis (mCCA-jI

Polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography reveals gray matter and white matter atrophy in SCA1 mouse models.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) is a fatal inherited neurodegenerative disease. In this study, we demonstrate the label-free optical imaging methodology that can detect, with a high degree of sensitivity, discrete areas of degeneration in the cerebellum of the SCA1 mouse models. We used ATXN1[82Q] and ATXN1[30Q]-D776 mice in which the transgene is directed only to Purkinje cells. Molecular layer, granular layer, and white matter regions are analyzed using the intrinsic contrasts provided by polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography. Cerebellar atrophy in SCA1 mice occurred both

Modality-spanning deficits in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in functional networks, gray matter, and white matter.

Previous neuroimaging investigations in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have separately identified distributed structural and functional deficits, but interconnections between these deficits have not been explored. To unite these modalities in a common model, we used joint independent component analysis, a multivariate, multimodal method that identifies cohesive components that span modalities. Based on recent network models of ADHD, we hypothesized that altered relationships between large-scale networks, in particular, default mode network (DMN) and task-positive networks (TPN

MRI markers for mild cognitive impairment: comparisons between white matter integrity and gray matter volume measurements.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the value of assessing white matter integrity using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) for classification of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and prediction of cognitive impairments in comparison to brain atrophy measurements using structural MRI. Fifty-one patients with MCI and 66 cognitive normal controls (CN) underwent DTI and T1-weighted structural MRI. DTI measures included fractional anisotropy (FA) and radial diffusivity (DR) from 20 predetermined regions-of-interest (ROIs) in the commissural, limbic and association tracts, which are thought to be involve

Automatic identification of gray matter structures from MRI to improve the segmentation of white matter lesions.

The segmentation of MRI scans of patients with white matter lesions (WML) is difficult because the MRI characteristics of WML are similar to those of gray matter. Intensity-based statistical classification techniques misclassify some WML as gray matter and some gray matter as WML. We developed a fast elastic matching algorithm that warps a reference data set containing information about the location of the gray matter into the approximate shape of the patient's brain. The region of white matter was segmented after segmenting the cortex and deep gray matter structures. The cortex was identified

Development of superficial white matter and its structural interplay with cortical gray matter in children and adolescents.

Healthy human brain undergoes significant changes during development. The developmental trajectory of superficial white matter (SWM) is less understood relative to cortical gray matter (GM) and deep white matter. In this study, a multimodal imaging strategy was applied to vertexwise map SWM microstructure and cortical thickness to characterize their developmental pattern and elucidate SWM-GM associations in children and adolescents. Microscopic changes in SWM were evaluated with water diffusion parameters including fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and
