Did an epidemic of tularemia in Ancient Egypt affect the course of world history?

The dynamics of the spreading, and the identity of a virulent epidemic, similar to bubonic plague or typhus, which hit Ancient Egypt in the middle of the Bronze Age, are hereby presented. Documented in medical papyri as well as archaeological findings, and re-echoed in biblical texts, a plague entered Egypt's main harbor, Avaris, around 1715 BC. As a result, the country was severely weakened at a time when it was already facing serious sociopolitical issues: crumbling central government, immigration, foreign influence, and the rise in power of the army and of warlords. The Hebrews, one of the

Congenital orthopaedic limp deformities in Corpus Hippocraticum.

During the fifth century BC in ancient Greece during the eve of orthopaedics, the Hippocratic School of Medicine diagnosed a series of congenital limb deformities. Congenital dislocation of the arm, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, tarsotibial joint, apex leg, as well as talipes valgus (clubfoot), congenital clavicle fractures, and thumb malfunction were all discussed by Hippocrates and his followers. Ancient Greek medico-philosophers, fond of a "perfect" human body, proposed an immediate non-interventional approach, while archaic orthotics and specialized footwear were suggested. The Hippocratic meth

Corpus Hippocraticum: historical source of treatment of craniomaxillofacial trauma.

The works of Hippocrates known in the Western World as the Corpus Hippocraticum have dominated medical thought and surgical practice for centuries. A substantial part of the Hippocratic Collection is dedicated to the description of injuries pertinent to Cranio-maxillofacial surgery and their management. Hippocrates has reached this level of surgical skill despite the limited pre-recorded knowledge and the restriction of post-mortem dissections.

Hippocrates: the forefather of neurology.

Hippocrates is one of the most influential medical doctors of all times. He started observing and experimenting in times of mysticism and magic. He carried a holistic and humanitarian approach to the patient with examination as the principal approach-inspection, palpation and auscultation are still the most important tools in diagnosing algorithms of today. He had immense experience with the human body most likely due to numerous wound treatments he had performed; some even believe he performed autopsies despite the negative trend at the time. Hippocrates identified the brain as the analyst of

[Hypothesis on the Achean disease].

A hypothesis on the Achaean disease. Analyzing the text in the light of the modern medical knowledge, the article traces a profile of the mortal illness described in the first book of Homer's Iliad. The disease was a severe, acute epidemic zoonosis, rapidly bringing death. First, it affected mules and dogs, then it involved men; the infection spread quickly and the number of deaths was high. These elements suggest that the illness occurred among the Achaeans can be identified with glanders, an infectious disease affecting primarily mules and horses that can be transmitted to man by contact wit

Greek mythology: the eye, ophthalmology, eye disease, and blindness.

BACKGROUND: In distant eras, mythology was a form of expression used by many peoples. A study of the Greek myths reveals concealed medical knowledge, in many cases relating to the eye. METHODS: An analysis was made of the ancient Greek texts for mythological references relating to an understanding of vision, visual abilities, the eye, its congenital and acquired abnormalities, blindness, and eye injuries and their treatment. RESULTS: The Homeric epics contain anatomical descriptions of the eyes and the orbits, and an elementary knowledge of physiology is also apparent. The concept of the vis

Ancient typhoid epidemic reveals possible ancestral strain of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi.

In contrast to other serotypes of Salmonella enterica, S. Typhi is exclusively adapted to human hosts. Recently, S. Typhi was identified in ancient skeletal material, thereby incriminating typhoid fever for the Plague of Athens. Since, according to Thucydides' report, animals were also affected by the disease, a working hypothesis is constituted that the causative agent of the Plague might be the anticipated original strain of S. Typhi, purportedly capable of infecting animals as well as humans. Possible future sequencing of the discovered ancient strain of S. Typhi may help towards identifyin

Institutional neonatal care as a manifestation of modern biosocial cooperation.

We don't see institutional neonatal care as a cold triumph of modern technocracy, but as the peak of an ancient human evolutionary strategy - biosocial cooperation and alloparenting. We trace care for vulnerable newborns from the evolutionary roots and selfless altruism seen in higher primates, through the deconstruction of myths about ancient eugenics with modern paleopathological findings in Greece, all the way to today's neonatal intensive care units. Using the example of kangaroo care and the neurobiological response of medical staff to newborn crying, we show that modern high-tech medicin

On the Origin of Urogynecology.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: As long as mankind and especially women exist there have been problems related to gynecological and obstetrical problems including urogynecology. The early history of urogynecology has never been well described. METHODS: In this review we describe the origin of urogynecology in its earliest written sources emphasizing on ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. RESULTS: Pelvic Organ Prolapse was, even then, an important part of gynecology and the connection between obstetric care and the occurrence of a prolapse was clearly recognized. There are countless examples of how

[Affective disorders--depression diagnosis and prognosis].

Affective disorders have been described since ancient Greece. The ICD-10 classification of mania and depression mixes typology with severity. A hierarchical model for depression separating psychotic, melancholic and non-melancholic depression is outlined. Psychometric measurements of mania and depression, including scales for use in clinical practice are presented. The course of affective disorders underlines the severity of the disorders with many recurrent episodes and long duration, especially in the depressive state.

The pancreas from Aristotle to Galen.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The first description of the pancreas in literature is found in Aristotle's Historia Animalium, but it is modified by "so-called". Therefore, the origin is pursued more extensively. METHODS: The Greek-English Lexicon recommends three treatises as a possible original source. These three and Galen's other papers are investigated. In 2005, Sachs et al. suggested an origin of the pancreas might have derived from the intestinal divination using the avian pancreas. This report is evaluated. RESULTS: The avian pancreas which is the intraperitoneal organ, might have been well kno

The plague of Thebes, a historical epidemic in Sophocles' Oedipus Rex.

Sophocles, one of the most noted playwrights of the ancient world, wrote the tragedy Oedipus Rex in the first half of the decade 430-420 bc. A lethal plague is described in this drama. We adopted a critical approach to Oedipus Rex in analyzing the literary description of the disease, unraveling its clinical features, and defining a possible underlying cause. Our goals were to clarify whether the plague described in Oedipus Rex reflects an actual historical event; to compare it with the plague of Athens, which was described by Thucydides as occurring around the same time Sophocles wrote; and to

Galen's anecdote of the fallen sophist: on the certainty of science through anatomy.

In this paper the author recounts an anecdote presented by Galen of Pergamum (circa 130-200 A.D.) about a sophist named Pausanias, who fell from his mount and struck his back against a rock. The patient developed a subsequent loss of sensation in the fingers of his left hand with complete sparing of motor function. Numerous medications were applied to his hand but to no avail. Galen stated that he applied the same medications to the original point of dorsal tenderness, resulting in the patient's dramatic and full recovery. Galen attributed the healing to local drug action at the site of a pres

[Archaelogical documentation of the atmospheric pollution in antiquity].

Authors examines the paleopathologic evidences of the atmosferic pollution in ancient time, point out the attention on two principal findings: pulmonar anthracosis and lead exposure. Pulmonar anthracosis is present in many mummified bodies and was due to the deposition on the pulmonar alveoli of carbon particles coming from the combustion of oils or vegetables for illumination, cooking or heating. Lead atmosferic pollution was very high between V century B.C. and III century A.D. in the North emisphere, in consequence to the impressive quantity of lead produced by Greek and Roman metallurgic t
