Role of thyroid hormones in an abnormal grooming behavior in thyroidectomized cats and cats with pontile lesions.

Thyroidectomized cats and cats with pontile lesions exhibit the same abnormal grooming behavior. Investigations were conducted to determine whether the abnormal grooming behavior in cats with pontile lesions was attributable to a hypothyroid condition. Administration of thyroid hormones abolished the abnormal behavior of thyroidectomized cats but was without effect in cats with pontile lesions. Studies of brain and blood levels of thyroid hormones in cats with pontile lesions failed to detect any differences from normal cats, and normal effects of thyroid hormones on evoked potentials to light

Understanding cyber grooming in children and adolescents: a scoping review of risk factors and prevention strategies.

The increasing digitalization of children's daily lives has created new opportunities for communication, education, and social interaction while simultaneously increasing exposure to online exploitation risks. Among these risks, child grooming and cyber grooming have emerged as significant psychological, social, and public health concerns. Cyber grooming extends traditional grooming processes into digital environments through the use of anonymity, persistent communication, and technological accessibility, enabling offenders to manipulate and exploit children and adolescents in online settings.

A novel naïve Bayes approach to identifying grooming behaviors in the force-plate actometric platform.

BACKGROUND: Self-grooming behavior in rodents serves as a valuable model for investigating stereotyped and perseverative responses. Most current grooming analyses primarily rely on video observation, which lacks standardization, efficiency, and quantitative information about force. To address these limitations, we developed an automated paradigm to analyze grooming using a force-plate actometer. NEW METHOD: Grooming behavior is quantified by calculating ratios of relevant movement power spectral bands. These ratios are then input into a naïve Bayes classifier, trained with manual video observ

Progression, maintenance, and feedback of online child sexual grooming: A qualitative analysis of online predators.

The limited literature on online child grooming has focused mainly on studying the characteristics of perpetrators and victims that facilitate the sexual abuse of minors. Little attention has been given to the perceptions of the perpetrators about the abuse process and the strategies used to sustain it over time. In the present study, after identifying a sample of 12 men convicted of online grooming, we used qualitative grounded theory through in-depth interviews and comparisons with the proven facts of their convictions. The results show how aggressors actively study the structural environmen

Short communication: Detection and monitoring of metritis in dairy cows using an automated grooming device.

Metritis, a prevalent disease on dairy farms, is negatively associated with reproduction, milk production, and the welfare of cows. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of monitoring low-resilience activities (i.e., behaviors that typically decrease when energy resources are limited or when the cost involved in the activity increases; e.g., brush usage) in the early detection of metritis. Data on daily brush usage (i.e., proportion of cows using the brush and the duration of usage) were collected from 28 metritic and 60 control cows 28 d postpartum using an automated monito

Number of Grooming Partners Is Associated with Hookworm Infection in Wild Vervet Monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops).

There are many known benefits of social grooming among primates, including maintenance of social relationships, removal of ectoparasites, and improved physiological condition. Recently, however, researchers have noted that social grooming and social contact may also present a significant cost by facilitating transmission of some parasites and pathogens. We investigated whether the number of social grooming partners varied based on infection status for gastrointestinal parasites. We used focal animal sampling and continuous recording to collect data on the number of grooming partners for known

Deficiency of antinociception and excessive grooming induced by acute immobilization stress in Per1 mutant mice.

Acute stressors induce changes in numerous behavioral parameters through activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Several important hormones in paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) play the roles in these stress-induced reactions. Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), arginine-vasopressin (AVP) and corticosterone are considered as molecular markers for stress-induced grooming behavior. Oxytocin in PVN is an essential modulator for stress-induced antinociception. The clock gene, Per1, has been identified as an effecter response to the acute stresses, but its fu

Dopamine receptor modulation of repetitive grooming actions in the rat: potential relevance for Tourette syndrome.

Studies of rodent grooming can provide valuable insight for dopamine contributions to the initiation, organization, and repetition of motor patterns. This information is useful for understanding how brain dysfunctions contribute to movement disorders such as Tourette syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder, in which patients are driven to reiterate particular movement patterns. In rodents, dopamine D1 receptor stimulation causes a complex behavioral super-stereotypy in the form of excessive production and rigid execution of whole sequences of movements known as syntactic grooming chains. Time structure of self-grooming in the rat: self-facilitation and effects of hypothalamic stimulation and neuropeptides.

Specific brain manipulations, such as stimulation of the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH) or injections of neuropeptides, increase self-grooming in the rat. Such manipulations also affect the different movements that constitute grooming. Using models to assess the time structure of these movements, the authors demonstrate that the rules that control the time structure within grooming are different from the ones that control its initiation. This study also showed that grooming is self-facilitating and that different brain manipulations in the same hypothalamic area induce struc

Multilingual social grooming on social media and self-perceived multilingual identity among Chinese university students.

BACKGROUND: Chinese university students purposefully use English-only and mixed Chinese-English posts, comments, and replies to share experiences, acknowledge others, and maintain ties, and everyday commentary often reads the practice as showing off. Identity scholarship holds that a multilingual identity is claimed through visible social participation, and quantitative research on digital multilingualism has centred on consumption and learning. This study conceptualises the practice as multilingual social grooming and, drawing on self-conscious emotion and social capital theory, asks whether

Increased Self-Grooming Gates Adult Visual Cortical Plasticity through a Ventral Pallidum-Visual Cortex Pathway.

Repetitive behaviors are prominent features of multiple neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, which are frequently accompanied by abnormalities in visual processing. However, whether repetitive behavioral states themselves actively regulate visual system and through what neural mechanisms remain unclear. Using a water spray paradigm that selectively increased self-grooming in male mice, we showed ocular-dominance plasticity in adult primary visual cortex (V1) was markedly enhanced. Neurons in the ventral pallidum (VP) were activated in synchrony with self-grooming behavior. VP inhibiti

Integrin β3 in forebrain Emx1-expressing cells regulates repetitive self-grooming and sociability in mice.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by repetitive behaviors, deficits in communication, and overall impaired social interaction. Of all the integrin subunit mutations, mutations in integrin β3 (Itgb3) may be the most closely associated with ASD. Integrin β3 is required for normal structural plasticity of dendrites and synapses specifically in excitatory cortical and hippocampal circuitry. However, the behavioral consequences of Itgb3 function in the forebrain have not been assessed. We tested the hypothesis that behaviors that are typically abnormal in ASD-such as self-

Prenatal lipopolysaccharide induces hypothalamic dopaminergic hypoactivity and autistic-like behaviors: Repetitive self-grooming and stereotypies.

Previous investigations by our group have shown that prenatal exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which mimics infection by gram-negative bacteria, induces social, cognitive, and communication deficits. For a complete screening of autistic-like behaviors, the objective of this study was to evaluate if our rat model also induces restricted and repetitive stereotyped behaviors. Thus, we studied the self-grooming microstructure. We also studied the neurochemistry of hypothalamus and frontal cortex, which are brain areas related to autism to better understand central mechanisms involved in our m

Behavioural processes in social context: female abductions, male herding and female grooming in hamadryas baboons.

The formation of bonds between strangers is an event that occurs routinely in many social animals, including humans, and, as social bonds in general, they affect the individuals' welfare and biological fitness. The present study was motivated by an interest in the behavioural processes that drive bond formation in a social context of hostility, in which the incumbent partners vary greatly in physical power and reproductive interests, a situation in which individuals of many group-living species find themselves often throughout their lives. We focused on the quantitative analysis of female abdu

Do California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi) use ritualized syntactic cephalocaudal grooming as an agonistic signal?

Animal communication theory holds that many signals have evolved from nonsignal precursors. This field and laboratory study of California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi) provides evidence for the coexistence of such a precursor with its derived display. The precursor is an ancient, endogenously sequenced (syntactic) pattern of cephalocaudal grooming movements (CCGs) shared by all rodent suborders. The following evidence supports the hypothesis that a supernormal version of this pattern has been selected for signal function. Syntactic CCGs in the field (a) were more rigidly stereotyped

Thyrotropin releasing hormone injected into the nucleus accumbens septi selectively increases face grooming in rats.

The effect of unilateral injection of peptides into the nucleus accumbens septi (NAS) on subcategories of grooming behavior was studied in male rats. The peptides used were: thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) and corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH). Male rats (Holtzman strain, 240-270 g body weight) injected with progressive doses of TRH (100, 200 and 400 ng) at 5-day intervals were compared with the control state (injection of artificial cerebrospinal fluid, CSF). A selective increase in face grooming was observed with the 100 ng (49.78 +/- 6.1

Prevalence and correlates of pubic hair grooming among low-income Hispanic, Black, and White women.

The purpose of this paper was to describe pubic hair grooming behaviors (shaving, waxing, trimming or dyeing) and the extent to which grooming was related to demographic characteristics and sexual history among low-income Hispanic, Black, and White women. Data were collected from 1677 women aged 16-40 years between July 2010 and August 2011 as part of a larger study. Participants completed a cross-sectional written survey. Multivariable analyses were used to identify correlates of pubic hair grooming. Being a current groomer was associated with being White, a younger age, under or normal weigh

Where are Minors Initially Contacted for Sexual Exploitation Grooming in North America? Implications for Prevention Programming.

Baird and Conolly's systematic review on North American domestic minor sexual exploitation claimed that the literature most frequently identifies the internet as the initial site of contact. However, in my analysis of their sources, only three of the seven identified studies indicated that the internet was the site of initial recruitment, three studies did not have enough information to make a determination, and one study did not identify the internet as the site of initial recruitment. For the papers that did cite the internet as the initial site of recruitment, most identified the internet a
