Journal of professional nursing : official journal of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing2024eng
BACKGROUND: Undergraduate nursing students are at risk of exposure to clinical related critical incidents. The impact on nursing students and the use of coping mechanisms and processes to make meaning of these distressing experiences are poorly understood.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to provide a theoretical understanding of the processes that undergraduate nursing students use to make meaning of clinical related critical incidents.
METHOD: Following the constructivist grounded theory method, a purposive sample was used to recruit 15 students enrolled in a Canadian university baccalau

AIM: To understand the maternity experiences of women from minority ethnic groups who had given birth in an NHS trust in the North-West of England, and experiences of midwives caring for them.
BACKGROUND: Women from minority ethnic groups have poorer maternity outcomes compared with other women. Research about maternity experiences of women from minority ethnic groups is limited but suggests that they have poorer experiences.
METHOD: Constructivist grounded theory was used as the framework for the study. Thirteen women and sixteen midwives were interviewed to elicit views and maternity exper

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. Approaches to screening for GDM continue to evolve, introducing potential variability of care. This study explored the impact of these variations on GDM counselling and screening from the perspectives of pregnant individuals.
METHODS: Following a Corbin and Strauss approach to qualitative, grounded theory we recruited 28 individuals from three cities in Ontario, Canada who had a singleton pregnancy under the care of either a midwife, family physician or obstetrician. Convenience and purposive samp

AIM: The study aimed to explore the experiences of care and recovery among older patients treated for physical trauma.
DESIGN: A qualitative study with a constructivist grounded theory design.
METHODS: Fifteen in-depth interviews with older adults recovering from physical trauma were conducted and analysed between 2019 and 2023, in accordance with grounded theory methodology.
RESULTS: The findings show that for older patients who suffered physical trauma, the core category was the strive to recapture autonomy. This was achieved by means of Adaptation, Reflection and Interactions, which cons

This study aimed to examine how problem gambling interacts with gendered drivers of intimate partner violence (IPV) against women to exacerbate this violence. Interviews were conducted with 48 female victims of IPV linked to a male partner's gambling; 24 female victims of IPV linked to their own gambling; and 39 service practitioners from 25 services. Given limited research into gambling-related IPV, but a stronger theoretical base relating to IPV against women, this study used an adaptive grounded theory approach. It engaged with existing theories on gendered drivers of violence against women

BACKGROUND: Digital development has caused rehabilitation services and rehabilitees to become increasingly interested in using technology as a part of rehabilitation. This study was based on a previously published study that categorized 4 groups of patients with cardiac disease based on different experiences and attitudes toward technology (e-usage groups): feeling outsider, being uninterested, reflecting benefit, and enthusiastic using.
OBJECTIVE: This study identifies differences in the biopsychosocial profiles of patients with cardiac disease in e-usage groups and deepen the understanding

PURPOSE: Caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease require support across the full disease trajectory. The aim of this study was to develop a conceptual framework of caregiving phases across the Alzheimer's disease and caregiving trajectories and the corresponding caregiver support needs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Constructivist grounded theory informed data collection and analysis. 40 spousal (n = 20) and adult children (n = 20) caregivers were interviewed. Recruitment was completed when theoretical saturation was achieved. Member-checking interviews occurred with 10 participants.

BACKGROUND: Acting with integrity is a central part of nursing practice. However, literature shows that professional integrity can be absent and where this is present it can face challenges. Governmental Inquiries have revealed deficits in the expression of nursing values which underpin professional integrity, in particular caring, compassionate and competent practice that maintains the dignity of patients. Evidence also suggests that it cannot be taken for granted that pre-registration education will have a positive impact on student nurses' ability to practice with integrity.

Unusual sensory experiences are commonly seen in people with Asperger syndrome (AS). They correlate with functional impairments and cause distress. The current study investigates how these experiences have affected nine adults with AS's lives, as well as the coping strategies utilised. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using Instant Messaging software. Data were analysed using Grounded Theory. A number of inter-related categories and focused codes were identified. The categories included heightened senses, sensory stress, the stress avalanche, moderating factors, coping strategies, oth

Chronic illness affects over 1 million children in the United States annually. One such illness prominent in the African-American population is sickle cell disease (SCD), which affects approximately 1 in 375 African Americans in the United States. This potentially life-threatening disease requires caregivers to carefully monitor and supervise children with SCD. Monitoring and caring for children with SCD places heavy burdens, demands, and responsibilities on these caregivers. The psychological stressors and unpredictable nature of the disease could cause caregivers to experience a variety of e

Human health and well-being are dependent on natural environments, which is the core foundation of the growing discipline of outdoor therapies. However, as with psychotherapy research in general, the field of outdoor therapies lacks descriptive process-oriented theoretical frameworks that precisely reflect this multi-faceted practice. Therapeutic work, whether this takes place indoors or outdoors, comprises numerous implicit relational and environmental dimensions. Implicit aspects are largely sensed, embodied and intuitive, and therefore hard to pin down and describe accurately. In this explo

Ending familial co-residence, termed 'moving on' by participants, is an increasingly relevant life transition for people with a learning disability due to increasing life expectancy and policy developments. Nevertheless, there is an absence of research exploring this transition experience in a United Kingdom (UK) context. This constructivist grounded theory study therefore aimed to explore, conceptualise, and theorise the 'moving on' experiences of adults with a learning disability and their families. This article reports the experiences of five adults with a learning disability and nine famil

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) among young Chinese women are shaped by sociocultural norms and moralized expectations around thinness and emotional restraint, yet theory grounded in local experiences remains limited.
METHOD: Using constructivist grounded theory, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 19 women with current or past ED experiences. Data were analyzed iteratively (open-focused-theoretical coding) with constant comparison, sending analytic memos, and team debriefing to build an explanatory model.
RESULTS: Four interrelated themes were identified: (1) risk background, in

In the UK, a parent dies every 22 minutes, significantly affecting children's mental health, education, and social well-being. Yet little is known about children's lived experiences of bereavement and support. Developed with public involvement, this qualitative study employed constructivist grounded theory. In-depth virtual interviews were conducted with eleven parentally bereaved children aged ten to eighteen. Iterative data analysis used the constant comparative method. Analysis constructed five themes: (1) What helps, (2) Talking on your terms, (3) A tornado of emotions, (4) Difficulties ac

Background/Objectives: Anticipatory grief is a significant phenomenon in the experience of family caregivers of individuals receiving palliative care (PC) at home, representing a complex emotional response to impending loss. Nevertheless, there is scarce research supporting an in-depth, context-sensitive understanding of caregivers' lived experiences in home settings. This study aims to develop a grounded theory that explains how family caregivers of individuals receiving PC at home experience anticipatory grief. Methods: This qualitative study used a constructivist grounded theory approach. F

PURPOSE: Awareness of one's own aging is a critical psychological process that shapes adaptation and well-being in later life. For women, age awareness is influenced by gendered experiences such as bodily changes, menopause, and shifting social roles. This study aimed to develop a grounded theory explaining how women aged 50-75 construct and adapt their awareness of aging through everyday life contexts.
METHODS: This study was guided by constructivist grounded theory, informed by symbolic interactionism and social constructionism. Nineteen in-depth interviews were conducted between 2021 and 2

Background and objectives Elder neglect, characterised by unmet care needs, social isolation, and emotional distress, has been consistently reported in epidemiological studies, yet it continues to be insufficiently acknowledged as a major public health concern in India. Existing frameworks inadequately explain how factors interact to produce neglect and abandonment. This study aimed to explore the circumstances leading to neglect among elderly cancer patients in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. Methods A qualitative grounded theory design was used. Data were collected through five in-depth interview

BACKGROUND: Controlled human infection model (CHIM) trials are useful tools for accelerating vaccine development through the deliberate infection of healthy volunteers in a controlled environment to study the course of disease in humans. CHIM trials may pose physical, psychological, and social harms to participants. Participants are subjected to long inpatient stays and daily sample collection, which may be uncomfortable. Very little is known about the CHIM trial participant experience and decision-making process.
METHODS: We conducted a modified grounded theory study, embedded within the Can

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic musculoskeletal disorder that is a leading cause of disability worldwide, with early diagnosis and pharmacological treatment being critical to alleviate disease progression. However, the marginalised populations face significant barriers in accessing timely medical care, which contributes to functional impairment, and reduced quality of life (QoL). Despite this, little is understood about how intersecting marginalities influence access to musculoskeletal care, particularly in low-resource settings.
PURPOSE: To explore care-seeking pathways, u
